    What about Luke Newton? Hasn't been in much, but has the looks and is 32.

    I understand what Barbara meant, it was a striking moment in the film very memorable. I've always had my doubts on it was just this that sold her on Daniel though, I think Layer Cake especially gave everyone a sense of what he could do as an actor.

    I think Barbara and Michael were always reluctant to mention it as it would be likke saying "Layer Cake sold us on him like it did everyone else" I thought it was very deliberate during Being James Bond, that of the films shown in Daniel's filmography Layer Cake was the one of few left out.

    Lara Croft and Road To Perdition must have made them aware as well, given how well he handled himself opposite A listers and real legends like Hanks and Newman

    I don't think it was so much of the film as much it was the scale of the production, probably the biggest in Daniel's career to that point. It showed the producers he could adapt to working in wider scale film, rather than just smaller scale indie films.

    I think BB is a bit like Cubby in her ability to spin stuff in hindsight. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly not a bad thing to do, but my suspicion is she likely had her eye on Craig along with about 5 other actors for Bond around 2001. I certainly think she saw that potential early, but probably wasn’t trying to contact him prior to 2004/5 or anything, and kept her options open. Craig’s career obviously went the direction it did and we got Tomb Raider and Layer Cake which probably helped make him the favourite (and rightfully). It’s never truly a case of ‘love at first sight’ in that way but a calculated choice.

    Cubby used to do it too, claiming he’d spotted Moore and considered him for DN. I mean, it’s possible he’d seen him earlier and figured he had Bond potential but never acted on it prior to LALD when he was a bit more established. There’s no record Moore was considered for DN. Stating he’d been considered earlier gives this idea that he was ‘the chosen one’ for Bond and Broccoli discovered him, even 10 years prior. He also did a lot of spin on what happened with Brosnan/Dalton in ‘84 - it’s likely why there’s this myth Dalton was seriously considered in ‘69.

    Definitely. But then again you kind of have to with Bond as it’s such a selective role. Even Lazenby got the stories about him punching out a stunt double and finding the same hairdresser/tailor that Connery had in order to sneak into the EON office (how true this is can be debated, even if it’s embellished).

    Although Dalton himself has said that he was asked to play Bond when Connery left (he's never specified if it was after YOLT or DAF), so it's not entirely a myth. It could well have been embellished, though, because Tim wasn't averse to playing along with Cubby's line about him only wanting to come back for one film after LTK while EON wanted him for another four or five. According to one of the MGM/UA execs in Nobody Does It Better, Tim's run actually ended because the studio refused to finance what became GE unless Brosnan played Bond. So, yes, post-facto mythmaking's not unknown in Bondworld!

    I’ve only seen Callum Turner in Masters of the Air, but that’s what sold me on him as a good choice for Bond (even though he’s playing an American there). I think he totally owns the screen, which is impressive given he shares a lot of scenes with Austin Butler, and he has a very charismatic, masculine presence. Doesn’t hurt that I think he has a very Bond look to him, and dating and jetting around the world with Dua Lipa gives him a kind of “real life Bond” sort of extratexual advantage producers might like.

    Not the most reliable source, but I could see James in the part. Women seem to like him, and men don’t seem to mind him. I think he’d be a good choice.

    Exactly, there are loads of ambassadors for Omega. It doesn't mean anything even if he does become the next Bond.
