If it is Villeneuve I am confident we will have another film with really amazing set and production design, something I think NTTD excelled at. That is very a very exciting proposition.
Yeah, visually I thought the film was very strong. That is something I'd like to see kept up, and indeed I think it's always been an important part of Bond's success overseas that it puts a lot of its money up on-screen. I have the Bond By Design coffee table book and it's always great to see how Ken Adams used space to make such epic sets.

One essential element the Bonds cannot risk losing is their travelogue quality. Budgets should never be cut when it comes to locations, production design and, indeed, sets. Any director who understands the value of eye candy in the Bonds has a head start in my book.

Maybe what people should do is make a simple list, say 1 to 5, of what crucially makes the Bond of the year 2024, and going forward, necessarily the same as the Bond of 1962. There's little doubt EON must be thinking about this (and have put some effort into it already with NTTD, whatever we may individually think of the film).

I.e. ... I think we can take for granted the following but after that I'm guessing everything is up for grabs.

    1. Male
    2. British
    3. Secret Intelligence Service / MI6

I would still love to see a semi-faithful adaptation of Moonraker that is set in the present and entirely in England.

I think this is likely. However, I do think they will go outside England at least a bit. It's expected.

You'd have to have pretty special locations for a Bond film to be set fully in England, and even then I don't think this is something the films will want to do. SF is the closest we'll get I think with longer stretches than usual being set in the UK, and even then the most interesting location is in Scotland (that said I'd be open to a future Bond film returning there. The Bond films have shot a handful of scenes there over the years, and it's got some great, beautiful locations, although I'm biased).

Not sure if a semi faithful adaptation of MR is on the cards either. It's a book that's had so many aspects adapted already, and I'm not sure it'll work without major rewrites (likely to the point that it'll just be a different story anyway).

That said I think it'll be interesting seeing which Bond novel EON will draw the most inspiration from. They usually gravitate towards a specific novel, with the Craig films from SF onwards seemingly preferring themes and plot ideas from YOLT, and the Brosnan films generally using elements from MR. Honestly, in some weird way I hope it's DAF. Not a novel I think suitable for faithful adaptation but in terms of Bond's character/a lot of its broad aspects it's got some great stuff.

I'm in agreement with the consensus, that despite my reservations Villeneuve can at least be trusted to deliver on spectacle and the lush visuals that bond needs. Even FRWL has great scope to it, with the chess game, the gypsy fight, the cathedral scene etc. I just hope he can try to have some fun, even if it's not overt humour, but just relax his style a bit.

I love Craig's Bond, but I truly believe Bond 7 would be electric and refreshing. The long gap would help Bond 7 too. Just like it helped Brosnan & Craig.

Fleming's Moonraker is too British. I mean, the novels were usually travel books disguised as thrillers. Bond in the UK is a bit lazy.

I wouldn’t say lazy. I think MR being set in England simply suited the story (and Fleming’s preoccupation with the history of private members clubs/his knowledge of 1950s London definitely comes through). For a film though I think it’s unlikely to happen.

With the Bond movies being shown daily on ITV this month and then moving to streaming on ITVX. Do we think an announcement could come towards the end of this while the movies are fresh in people's minds?

    Good point, just wishful thinking

A dream team for me would be Anthony Horowitz, Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve writing together. Someone else could direct, if none of them couldn't already do it. As I said, wishful thinking. It's always hard for me to put a cast and crew together for a Bond movie: You have to be realistic, with a bit of surprise.

I am one of those Bond fans who likes the fact that Bond is British and wouldn't mind seeing Bond films that actually celebrate his home country. That Bond himself isn't much of a fan doesn't mean the filmmakers have to shy away from scenes and stories set in England. As we saw in NTTD, Bond doesn't always have to meet M in the office. IMO,
what's lazy is uninspired, unimaginative writing.

Also the more other locations you visit, the more you can diversify your cast and characters.

I think Bond 7 needs those Bondian escapist locales again. Crabkey for example, is another reason Dr. No was highly successful. Crabkey was like another world to the audience. Silva's Island in SF was a subtle way of doing it in Craig's Bond era too. Safin's Island too. But Bond 7 needs to spend more time in such locations, with action scenes done there too.

I think a Bond film set solely in England wouldn't be as interesting as it would have been in the past to be honest.

I think Skyfall just about got away with it in 2012, because of the Olympics and that sense of British pride. I was disappointed Spectre's third act and 30 minutes of NTTD took place in London. Just keep it to M's briefing/Q scene and perhaps Bond in his flat then on with the film.

Bond is all about locations, they just need to be utilised correctly

Funnily enough, I did feel Bond's travelogue element in SP than I did in NTTD. Maybe because the camera didn't really show Bond travelling in NTTD. SP showed Bond in helicopters, planes and trains.

Bond is SIS, not Five. The problem with Bond in Britain is that it isn’t where he is supposed to be working — to all intents, in SF and SP he (and others) are rogue operators. But then, arguably, Fleming (and the MI6 of the films) was always writing as though it was a sort of general intelligence service, even when real world elements were front and centre.

Personally, I don’t mind a bit of Britain in there, and find US set stuff boring — so many action films are Hollywood and therefore US anyway — Bond is a very continental sort of spy, and always has been.

That's what us old timers thought about Connery after seeing DN, FRWL and GF first run.

Craig's a great Bond. I think him being that good, might also be the reason for the delay...because EON are definitely thinking about how to make Bond 26 better than CR that masterfully launched Craig's Bond. Let's not be surprised when Bond 7 wins us over in the first 15mins of his debut.

I won't be surprised if Bond 7 wins us over in the first 15 minutes. Because he should. The history of the franchise is built around actors who should do exactly that. The idea an indeterminate space of time is needed to separate the next Bond from Craig eludes me. When that film finally arrives, I doubt anyone will be saying, "too soon."

    I couldn’t agree with this comment more @Jordo007 .

Bond doesn’t have to go globe hopping all the time. One or two international locales is fine.
    But utilise them well.
The early films did this for the most part very well.
Obviously the World has got smaller, and almost any destination is accessible to the masses now.
Still the right locale within a good story, and Bond will shine there.
I’m picturing the Canadian Rockies / Vancouver as a potential place.
