I am guessing that is a time rift/portal created by the Dial of Destiny.

Time travel in an Indy is too sci-fi it’s like aliens in an Indy film…oh wait well I will see it I guess

They already jumped the shark with Inner space aliens, I think time travel is more plausible lol

At this stage I just want great Indy scenes and action.

My strategy will be to watch KOTCS just before I watch DOD lol

I see what you’re doing there; before seeing the next Bond, I’m going to watch SPECTRE.

I am ready for this film, much more so than I was for KOTKS. The trailer looks good, indeed. My only regret is that we haven't had a few more Indy films in well over 4 decades. Still, I'm looking forward to DOD.

Exactly. Not an easy fact to accept that in all that time, we've had only 5 Indy films.

It is a bit crazy they didn't make more. Even just Disney sitting on it for ten years makes no sense.

We probably could have possibly had more Indy movies. But Lucas was so hung up on Crystal Skulls and Aliens, that it seemed with reluctance, people came back. As for future Indy stories, it wouldn’t be hard to James Bond the character. There’s always a artifact or army that Indy could take, real or fake. Hopefully, if all goes well, Disney/Lucasfilm will take this into action. Marvel comics could be a good place for the character to start.

Sure fire way for the film not to be disappointing, joking aside I like what I see in the DOD trailer and if anything it will be visually stunning. I trust Mangold, I have liked his work since I first watched the excellent Identity.

Yeah he's not the guy who's going to make a bland Marvel-style thing; this'll be a proper film.

Holy cow I love that film I had no idea he directed it… can he direct the next Bond film please….

Mind you it’s more Agatha Christie then horror (I am shocked she was not given credit as the film is clearly And then there were none)

The existence of non white, male, heterosexual people in entertainment should NOT be disparagingly called “woke.” That’s just thinly veiled bigotry. I think what upsets people more is overly preachy messaging, replacement of already-established white male characters, Mary Sue types like Rey Skywalker, double standards like with objectification, and generalized male bashing to prop women up. Militant progressivism turns off moderates like me.

What does "Mary Sue types like Rey Skywalker" mean ? There must be at least two references in here, and I do not follow or understand either.

In a nutshell, a Mary Sue character means a character that is *too* perfect, and Rey is the lead protagonist of the newest Star Wars trilogy. The reason that would be “woke” or undesirable is that she isn’t a relatable character; her lack of flaws makes her a bad example of female empowerment.

I thought Rey was a brilliant character. People are getting way too political here with all this woke talk etc. They are only films!

I thought Rey was a poor character but Daisy Ridley's performance almost saved her. Made her far more likeable than she would have been otherwise.

I like Daisy Ridley and found Rey endearing in The Force Awakens, though there is no getting away from how badly the character was written, the writing for the whole trilogy was very inconsistent.

There were certainly a lot of similarities to And then There Were None, its difficult to make any kind of whodunit without it in some way reminding the audience of a Christie story.
  • I remember someone criticizing a mystery film where there were two killers, and they said "That's just like Scream." And my thought was "Agatha Christie did it fifty years before Scream, you fool." My point here is just that Agatha Christie did everything first, and you can't put her name on everything.

For the record, I like Daisy Ridley and don’t fault her for Rey’s character. The problem is the writing; she’s way too perfect and therefore boring. It’s also worth remembering that this happens with male characters too, a great example being Charlie from the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film. In the 70s one, he is a believable kid who makes human mistakes, while he’s a robotic saint that can do no wrong in the newer one. The reason I singled out Rey earlier is because I was pointing out “woke” things that can come off as irritating, and in this context, given female empowerment / “girl power” is a traditional progressive / “woke” value, it can be argued it’s overcompensated with overly perfect female leads sometimes. Anakin and Luke Skywalker, the leads of the first two trilogies, had distinguishable faults and flaws.

ANYWAYS, on topic with Indy, I’m very hyped for the product. Based on the little we know Phoebe’s character sounds plenty interesting and very much not a Mary Sue type! I also am eager to hear more about the game; a great open world one for that and Bond would be a dream come true!

I blame Spielberg. He was attached for many years but didn’t seem to be terribly invested in making the film. Look how many times this film got pushed back because he wanted to do another film. Once Spielberg left and Mangold took over, the production accelerated.

There are other elements of the trailer I dislike sadly o can’t mention them without opening a can of worms here and basically devolving the thread till it’s locked …,

    However I will maintain hope

I can sympathize with that. I'll keep some optimism for now but this is clearly not the thread to share any disappointment in what we've seen so far.

I mean I don’t see why you can’t explain the things you dislike? A lot of us would be happy to have a mature conversation about whatever it is.

Unfortunately, reservations / even skepticism gets shot down a lot in these conversations, so I can’t blame them for not wanting to try. A lot of people like to quickly make things personal or jump to conclusions.

I think some of the niggles I could easily highlight are a result of our leading star being 80 years old. Just for nostalgia I am excited to go on one last adventure with Indy which admittedly will influence my opinion.

Well, for me, it depends what the reservations with the trailer are. I mean, apologies if I'm bringing up a sore subject, but if the reservations are based around gender and race then I'll just be a bit stumped and confused... if it's the CGI or Ford's age then I'll understand but probably disagree.

I think the film looks fantastic, aesthetically and narratively (I am excited at the prospect of Indy facing ex-nazis involved in the space race and the concept of time travel). I’m glad Salah is returning.

Also cannot express my gratitude to all involved for not naming the film “Indiana Jones” or “Indy” and following the classic template instead, I like DoD as a title a lot. As a huge Indy fan it’s amazing to see that this film is on its way for real after years of development hell. I can’t wait.

If anything, any genuine concerns about “wokeness” around this particular film ought to be shot down by the fact John Rhys-Davies is back as Sallah. I’m sure we’ll hear some outcry about that.

I was so traumatized by the embarrassingly bad KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, I only just remembered that Indiana Jones married Karen Allen's character at the end of that movie. So where is she in this? Or their son for that matter?

I really wanted to like this trailer, but it's wall-to-wall crappy CGI. And DIAL OF DESTINY sounds like a phone sex hotline.

@Escalus5 That's until you come to realize there's titles like 'Indiana Jones And The Sky Pirates'.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything but a big CGI-loaded event. Had modern CGI been around in the early '80s, I bet Raiders and Temple had made extensive use of it too. Spielberg and Lucas seemed more than happy to jump on that wagon in recent times.

At least Spielberg didn’t redo his original work with CG and enforce it as the only accessible version…

If I made films, I’d go with practical over CG as much as possible. Even with all the “advancements” of CG, practical still looks better 9/10 times for me, especially concerning organic creatures.

Yeah, for myself I think he certainly is too old, and looks it to be honest. In some bits he's looking quite frail. But it is what it is, I can get over that, and I want a new Indy movie.

I think if a hero like James Bond can be killed off, a hero like Indy dying won't shock people that much. More like...if Bond can die, anyone can die.

Ford probably has it in his contract for Indy to die or cease to exist.
