I hope that one day we can see a facts based film, showing us the details of this mission. Could be exciting.

j7wild mentioned above that Bin Laden was a 'Muslim murderer'... well, I'm sure he didn't mean it this way, but apparently al-Qaeda has killed more Muslims than people of any other religion. That abhorrent organisation has lost its (figure)head, which must be a good thing for everyone throughout the world, but just what that means going forward is anyone's guess - more vigilance will most certainly be needed in the years to come, I sure there's little doubt about that.

Acknowledgement must go to the US Intelligence and military communities (plus, of course, those of their allies, lest we forget) for their work over the last ten years in hunting down Bin Laden, but also - and more importantly - for their tireless wider work in nullifying the threat of al-Qaeda worldwide...

Let's be clear on this: OBAMA did NOT kill Bin Laden. An American soldier, who Congress just a few weeks ago was debating on whether or not to PAY, did. Obama just happened to be the one in office when our soldiers finally found him and took him out. It was OUR "US Soldiers" who have been fighting for Us from day 1.. and I refuse to listen to anyone give Obama the credit for something our men and women of the Military put their lives on the line to accomplish!! Mission Accomplished by our SOLDIERS!!!!!!!! This is NOT an Obama victory, but an AMERICAN Military victory!!

Quoting j7wild: unfortunately, Obama will take credit for this and use it to get re-elected

    HUGE CONGRATS

to President Barack Obama for taking care of business.

Evidently I'm hoping there will be no severe repercussions.
Woooh lest be real Luds, Obama did not take care of business, that honor is given to those brave SEALS who did the job and took care of business. The only thing Obama did was give the green light on this mission, and for that I can be thankful. Those SEALS are the real heroes, GOD bless them!!
  • A great justice has been served, though I fear it's not a solution or end to terrorism by any means...

Not to be a downer of course though, I'm hugely glad they finally got him. :-D Though part of me wishes they'd take his head and put it on a pole in front of the White House, à la Oliver Cromwell :p

You had to be there BB007, it was almost surreal. My daughter had been after me to go to a Phillies game and on a whim this past weekend we decided to grab some tickets and go to this one. All of a sudden everybody's phones including mine started going off. It was my wife telling me we finally got that murdering scumbag. This night, I guarantee, will likely be the only time in my life that Phillies and Mutts fans were united and putting their differences in rooting aside to rejoice.

Wow. Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy your bin Laden joke or disagree with your happiness over his death in any way, shape, or form, but I find your Obama bashing to be un-American and in poor taste. I totally hope Obama gets re-elected as a result of this. I guess you must be a Republican.

While I certainly agree that our S.E.A.L.S did a great job in physically ridding the world of a genuine menace, his death was a team effort. Our intelligence community did exactly what Obama promised to everyone regardless of political affiliation that he would make a priority in his campaign, which was to locate and neutralize bin Laden. Something that Bush failed to do when our troops have him dead to rights in Tora Bora, something he promised us he would do after 9/11. When the time came, he failed to give the order and our people who were in Tora Bora have publicly told us that. "Mission accomplished" my ass. Worst U.S president ever and his father a close second. When the time came again, Obama did not fail to give the order. He does not deserve all the credit, but he was the one who risked our ties with the Pakistani's and betted correctly that our intelligence was right that he was there. Whether you agree with his politics or not, he is our commander-in-chief and deserves respect for helping get the job done. And the funniest thing is, Bush, Cheney, Limbaugh and all the Republicans were united in recognizing his role and giving the credit where it was due.

    Sir Henry

Having read back through the thread, I gotta agree with you J7. I will give some credit to Obama for giving the green light, but come on, the real credit goes to SEAL Team 6, not Obama. The shear determination and patriotism this unit displays is superb and really makes me love this country that much more.

I really admire the Americans for their very well calculated approach. The USA has shown the world that no one can run from justice forever, no matter how paranoid you are, no matter how much money you have and no matter where in the world you choose to hide.

He just got himself banned from CBn for his actions in the bin Laden thread where he posted some rather disturbing things (about how bin Laden should have been taken alive and tortured for days before being killed) and serious misconceptions and dangerous things about Islam.

and where did you get that information?

I am still there, I am not banned!

Furthermore, I wasn't the only person in the Bin Laden thread over there who felt that Bin Laden should had been kept alive and made to suffer for his actions.

    Stop spreading rumours!

sorry J7 for not getting back to you sooner but I've just returned from the hospital after I saw your last link - my ribs popped out - because I was laughing soooooooooo much.

Anyway I'll leave you alone because I have to bow down to your superior wit and your magnanimous character, my brain really can't cope with your cunning as I believe you studied cunning at Oxford under Professor Cunning Fox.

Listen to the small man with a hat. Peeps, let's not start attacking each other in here.
  • I was (admittedly) watching Brothers and Sisters on ABC when the news cut in and a sense of dread filled me with "Christ, what's happened now?" I've never exactly celebrated a person's death before... but, I'll admit I was pretty damn happy about the news. I feel slightly guilty for being elated about a man's murder, but hearing the news felt like we attained some semblance of closure, ten years in the making.

And, regarding the whole "Obama didn't kill Osama" post going around, not just here but on Facebook... he kind of, sort of did. I know he didn't personally repel into the room and shoot him in the eye, but he gave the order, instructed the team to violate Pakistan's sovereignty, offered more resources to our troops on the ground in case of a clash with Pakistani forces, upped the number of targeted drone strikes in the region, engaged in intelligence gathering operations... and didn't need to torture anyone to do it. He promised in his campaign that he would bring Osama to justice and would enter Pakistan, if necessary, to carry out the job, but was deemed "naive" and didn't understand global politics. The Bush Administration went from wanting OBL "dead or alive" to not being the least bit concerned about him. Interesting.

I believe it's not just a victory for President Obama, but for the entire country. =]

Also, I think it was our beloved Tea Party urging for the shut down of our government, despite not being aware of what those consequences would be (no military pay, no tax refund, closed state parks, etc.). Claiming the President was debating if he wanted to pay the military or not makes absolutely no sense whatsoever when we're engaged in two and a half wars. He was urging both parties, and personally holding talks, to come to an agreement on the budget. And, they did. A sloppy one, but an agreement.

Whoever takes the real credit for this terrorist wipe-out, what matters is that it's done successfully. No point arguing over who should walk away with the victor’s honors – those who planned this, those who authorized this or those who executed this. Strange, how even over something like this, stubborn and pointless debate can ensue. Makes me wonder why we even bother trying to ‘clean’ the planet…
  • You are absolutely right, Dimi. I think I had read that comment too many times... and just let the words flow. When it comes down to it, we got our man. Now we just have to get the remaining members of the group and dismantle its operations so no one else at home or abroad is hurt.

WASHINGTON – Two U.S. officials say pornography was among the items seized when U.S. Navy SEALs raided the Pakistani hideout of Osama bin Laden almost two weeks ago.

The officials say it was unclear who the material belonged to, or whether Bin Laden viewed it. Bin Laden's son and two other adult male couriers lived at the compound, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence.

The pornography was confiscated in addition to a handwritten journal, five computers, ten hard drives and 110 thumb drives seized at the site, which are now being analyzed by a CIA-led team.

well.... since we won't get to see Bin Laden's death photos, can we look at his porn?!?

    :-))

Bin Laden is no different then say Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggart.

Their lives are nothing more than a lies.

And their mindless followers will do their bidding for them.

    What a JOKE!!!

What I don't understand is why Bin Laden couldn't have afforded a better tv, not only for his porn, but just to watch the tapes of himself, or his favourite western sitcoms, and why do the photos make it look like he was living in a crackhouse. Even if the place wasn't shot up, it still looked like a dump.
Very strange. Good riddance! Good job Seals. "The fight goes on and on and on.....

I heard he was watching an episode of Eldorado at the time. The SEALS burst in, took one look at the tv, and... well... did the world a service. Eldorado? *shudders*

I watched the report on the place he was living at and some of the locals testified that his people drove around in brand new Land Rovers - as IF THAT didn't attract the attention of the local Police and Military.

You got to know they knew he was there and they were paid off to look the other way!

As fun as it is to make LOLs, it's worth noting that Reuters is the only organization to have reported this Porn claim, based on anonymously quoted "officials." Previous details about the OBL operation have been mis-reported by the administration, and it's possible that this, too, is bogus.

The Land Rovers? It is a wealthy part of Pakistan and if you take a look lots of mountains - so 4x4s would not be uncommon. The thing is everyone loves their Toyota 4x4s over there so a Land Rover would be the odd choice.

Can the anti-Pakistan clan here finally give some sort of sympathy to these people who are the front line on the war on terror and not passing cynical judgements by sitting on their over-sized sofa with their laptops watching porn and eating whole cows in one go:
