The Macallan 50 year Single Malt in Skyfall

There may well be a thread on this but I'm in a hurry so can't be bothered to search!

Am sat in a bar in Prague watching Liverpools latest travails. Anyway behind the bar they have a bottle of Macallan.
Is this the scotch in SF that Silva claims is a favourite of Bond (although where this comes from I don't know. I'm sure he probably has but I never remember Fleming having him drink scotch)?

It's only a 10 year and I'm sure the one in the film was older but I probably couldn't afford something better anyway.

If someone could answer in the next 45 mins before I hit the metro I'd be appreciative as I could easily do with a slug to drown my sorrows when Liverpool inevitably capitulate to the mighty Young Boys.

Not a big scotch fan so if it isn't I might just go for vodka - they have Russki Standard although it is a room temperature which is never done in Russia so might have to just start in the Jaegers!

    It's '62 Macallan in Skyfall.

I've got money on the Young Boys.

Well I know the one in the film was 50 years old.

Personally I'd go for the Vodka anyway.

    Cheers chaps.

Well it's a 10 year Macallan so that makes it 02 not 62.
Is the year of DAD a bad omen as to its vintage?

After living in Russia for years cant bring myself to drink vodka that isn't ice cold. I'm going with the Macallan and sooner rather than later as we look a total shambles - this is Young Boys not f*****g Barca!!!

Hello! Joe Cole pays back some of his astronomical wages!

Mcallans all round chaps - guess I'll have to drink yours. The mighty reds are back slaying one of Europes giants!!!!

The 10 year is pretty nice if you like an all-rounder single malt. Not exceptionally inspiring, but super smooth for the age.

I'd happily order this over a Glenmorangie of the same year. Remember, no ice and a couple if drops of water is the way to drink it.

Thanks for the tip doubleonothing. Not a big scotch fan so I'll now to your knowledge.

Actually I might finish the bottle as a last minute equaliser goes in for the team with the gayest name in world football. Christ we're poor.

Ok mods I think this can be closed now.

I may have to try this? I confess to never hearing of it? Its good to experiment?!!!! ;)
  • Has there been a thread about Bond's Whisky's? I've had Mccallan (not the 50 year old!) and pretty well agree with Doubleonothing - nice enough but not especially memorable. The Talisker the Brosnan Bond drank wasn't really to my taste either. I favour a 14 year old Genlivet.

  • Sorry to say, major product placement, good single malt whisky but really overpriced, it's a Speyside & there are many others from this region of Scotland which are the match if not better & of a more affordable price.

I Think he only drinks it when he breaks into M's pad. Perhaps Silva being her favorite at one time recalled her drinking and sharing the brand with him also. Never seen it in C.R. when he broke in that time .
  • Sorry to say, major product placement.

I agree - I found this much more jarring than the more publicised use of Heineken, the use of which was subtle and natural in the context of the film.

Very valid point. I found it rather irksome when Silva says 'A particular favourite of yours I believe?' when it has never been mentioned in any book or film up to this point. In fact does Flemings Bond ever drink a single malt? I suppose he probably has but I certainly cant recall off the top of my head. Mostly when he drinks spirits its vodka.

Now if they had had him say 'its a pre war Wolfschmidt from Riga - a particular favourite of yours I believe?' my cup would have runneth over but alas such Flemingian references are few and far between these days.

Yes like you, I am a purist, I wish they'd stop with the obvious product placement & go for more of the essence of Fleming's creation.

Much like you said it would have lifted this film in the eye's of us faithful to the original creation, However l don't think a small Herbal Liqueur manufacturer would stump up the cash to justify it's placement in a mega bucks movie these days, it seems sometimes that every bit of creative integrity has to be slaughtered on the alter of commercialism.

One day my friends, one day.

I'm reading all the books now in order and up 'till now (TMWGG) he hasn't had a drop of Scotch, mainly because he drinks Bourbon and branchwater. As I said in another thread, I don't know why, but I do have an inkling Fleming didn't like Scotch.

Anyway, I prefer Tormore. And indeed, do follow Dublo's drinking instructions.

Oh, and at the same time, TheWizard is right about the Vodka as well. Why do pubs not put those bottles in their freezers! I don't want Ice, I want it icecold!

A gentleman after my own heart, only way to serve Vodka is neat straight from the freezer in a shot glass, either Russian, Latvian or Swedish but only if brewed in specified country, never ever Smirnoff as it's brewed by Diagio in Scotland. Sorry James another major product placement.

My Favourite Whiskey is The Balvenie "DoubleWood", a 12 year old single malt.
