Quantum of Solace: Homages to The Spy Who Loved Me

Watching Quantum of Solace tonight, I was surprised by how many references there are to the best 007 film of all time.

I counted three:

1) Walking through the desert in a tuxedo with the Bond girl in a dinner dress
2) The rooftop fall

But the most shocking (and most subtle and clever) is the card Bond hand's to Greene's men when following Camille in Haiti. The card is a Universal Export's card and the name on it?

"R. Sterling"

R. Sterling has been Bond's alias once before...in The Spy Who Loved Me when he poses as Robert Sterling, a marine biologist to check out Atlantis and meet Stromberg

It's blink and you miss it stuff...but a nice touch for sure :)

Isn't R. sterling used in more than one other film?

    Mr Somerset is FRWL
    Charles Morton is OP
James St John Smythe is AVTAK
    Mr Jones is DAF
    Mr Beech is CR
    Mr Fisher is YOLT

They are the ones I can think of off the top of my head
  • He was James Stock of The London Financial Times in AVTAK too

Fair enough. Weird that they chose to reference Spy.

Oh yea, forgot about that one.

It's just interesting they picked TSWLM's alias...a nice touch :)
  • I noticed those too as well as the obvious GF homage. Ironically there probably aren't 2 more different Bonds than Craig and Moore.

In my opinion those are good taste homages, not as the other one from GF.

I could be wrong about this, but wasn't there a Casino Royale reference in Quantum of Solace?

Yes, but it's very subtle, like finding a Star Wars reference in Spaceballs.

Personally I doubt that the TSWLM references were intended. I honestly think the moments came as they were writing. For example, Bond ends up on the roof of the opera house. At that point they might have been left without a convenient way out and so they threw the guy off the roof. It could also have been that they merely wanted to drop his body on Greene’s car. Whatever was intended or not, there’s a fair chance the so-called reference was nothing but incidental.

The desert walk is the same thing. They would get there eventually. The script wants us to experience the terrible combination of heat and dry air. The clothing of our characters is purely circumstantial: it’s what they were wearing the night before anyway. Again, I don’t think they had TSWLM in mind.

After all, were they thinking DAF when devising the goldeneye satellite? Is every card scene in the series a direct reference to DN’s introduction of Bond? Is the boat chase in TMWTGG a direct reference to LALD? Is the Bond versus Jaws train fight of TSWLM a reference to the Bond versus TeeHee train fight, with they themselves being references to FRWL? … I think the series is loaded with similar scenes re-appearing now and then; they don’t necessarily need all be read as intended references though.

If QoS had a good reason to celebrate TSWLM, I’d agree. That said, the GF reference seems to come out of nowhere as well but in this case the moment is so iconic, it’s either Forster and his team geeking out over the chance of recreating an immortalized moment from the old days or it’s meant to raise publicity for the film. The rooftop drop and the desert walk, however, may only be of some significance to the most 007-educated of the Bond fans and even then it could easily be considered unintended. Just my two cents. ;-)
  • Surely the most obvious homage (aside from the 'Oilfinger' scene) is the Moonraker jumping out of a plane without a parachute? And very well done it is too.
