Georgeville Television, an independent TV studio co-founded recently by Leon Clarance of Motion Picture Capital, the financing arm of Reliance Entertainment, and producer Marc Rosen, has teamed with feature director Martin Campbell (Casino Royal) to revive the cult 1978 adventure/sci-fi series Blake’s 7. Writer Joe Pokaski (Heroes, CSI) will pen the re-imagining of the original series created by Terry Nation, a prolific UK TV writer who also created the Daleks for the classic BBC series Doctor Who. Campbell is attached to direct the Blake’s 7 reboot, which is being shopped to U.S. networks.

I really like Blakes 7 and would like to see it updated, rebooted or whatever. Just hope the cast is as good as the classic was.
My favorite character was Avon and the women were very attractive (except Calle, she was just okay but Soolin, Dayna Mellenby, Jenna WOW)
  • Yep, Soolin was part of many a boyhood fantasy.... :\">
  • Awesome news - but can they match the cast they had first time around. Having said that I never took to Blake.

    Thanks Sam

Blake’s 7, the Georgeville Television-produced reboot of the cult British adventure/sci-fi series, has landed at Syfy. The cable network will develop the remake, which will be written by Joe Pokaski (Heroes) and directed by feature helmer Martin Campbell (Casino Royale). The project was taken out to US networks last month by Georgeville, the independent TV studio co-founded earlier this year by Leon Clarance of Motion Picture Capital, the financing arm of Reliance Entertainment, and producer Marc Rosen. Blake’s 7 has a script-to-series commitment, meaning that if Syfy likes the script, it will greenlight the project as a 13-episode series. Georgeville employed the same model with its first series, Neil Cross’s Crossbones, which will premiere on NBC in midseason.

Originally created by prolific British TV writer Terry Nation (Dr. Who), Blake’s 7 premiered on the BBC in 1978, running for four seasons. Referred to as “The Dirty Dozen in space,” the series centered around hard-core renegades and criminals who escape from a prison planet, battling humans and aliens alike – and becoming heroes. Despite its no-frills, low-tech special effects, Blake’s 7 was an international hit and still enjoys a fan following a quarter of a century after its launch.

GVTV acquired the rights to the Blake’s 7 franchise from rightsholder Andrew Sewell and his company B7 Media with funding provided by MPC. Campbell, Pokaski, Clarance, MPC’s Deepak Nayar and Sewell will executive produce.

We could be gearing up for production next year...

My pick for Servalan: Morena Baccarin.

Come on, everybody knows that she copied Jacqueline Pierce's hairdo for V.

Can't wait. I hope they keep to character development and not just cgi fx.

That ending still sends shivers down my spine....I still remember watching it for the first time when I was just a lad.

SyFy basically ripped off Blakes7 with Stargate Universe only they left out the evil Federation. Big alien ship with small human crew who don't understand it all... Robert Carlyle was playing Avon. List goes on.

There were also elements of Battlestar Galactica (the remake) in it: lack of resources, Carlyle was Baltar, etc.)

But if you want to see a true remake of Blake's 7, the comic book R.E.B.E.L.S. '9* (spun-off from L.E.G.I.O.N. '9*) fits the bill much more, I'll say.

US cable network Syfy has developed the remake of the classic cult drama with FremantleMedia International.

Thirteen hour-long episodes - written by Joe Pokaski (Heroes) and directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) - will be produced by Georgeville TV.

The new Blake's 7 - set in 2136 - is described as a "revolutionary reinvention" of the BBC's 1978-1981 sci-fi drama, following seven criminals - 6 guilty and 1 innocent.

Led by hero of the rebellion Blake - who is mourning the loss of his dead wife Rachel - the crew acquire an alien ship which gives them a second chance at life.

"Blake's 7 was such a forward-thinking concept that the show continues to have resonance with audiences today," said David Ellender, CEO FremantleMedia International.

"Its complex characters and gritty storylines, coupled with the highly talented team and modern production techniques are sure to appeal to both original fans of the show and new viewers."

Blake's 7 was created by Terry Nation - also known for devising Doctor Who monsters the Daleks. The original show starred Gareth Thomas as Blake, alongside the likes of Paul Darrow and Jacqueline Pearce.

  • Great news but the Britishness that made the first so good will be lost...how many Shakespearean actors were in te original? Loads.

I hear Georgeville is nearing a series order at Xbox for its reboot of the cult British sci-fi series Blake’s 7. The project, which has Martin Campbell attached, was originally set up at Syfy. I hear negotiations are underway for Blake’s 7 to land at Xbox as one of the service’s first original series. (The company also has a Halo series in the works with Steven Spielberg and his Amblin TV.) Additionally, Georgeville is in serious contention for a pilot order at Amazon with Chris Carter’s thriller The After. While the focus is currently on self-generated product, Georgeville TV is not closing the door to pure financing, though there is nothing in that vein on the horizon.
