Sounds good, I'm reading it soon once I get done with GF and TMWTGG.
  • I've posted my review of TSWLM in the "what Bond novel are you currently reading" thread but thought I would address the question of how it's dated here. It's dated quite well - the London portion of the story is clearly of its time... particularly the sections dealing with Viv's first romance with Derek. But once we get to North America it doesn't feel too dated at all. And Viv is one of the most modern of all Fleming's characters - a young career woman who decides to go travelling.

I need to re-read TSWLM down the line. My head wasn't in it after coming off Moonraker and Thunderball.

I think YOLT has a timeless quality - plus there are still sadly very many people who commit suicide both in Japan and further afield.

Probably OHMSS, I'd say. I don't really recall anything that screamed "60's" off the pages. Mainly because it focused on Bond and Tracy.

I'd have to follow suit and also name On Her Majesty's Secret Service as the least dated novel.

Casino Royale is still a top-notch thriller and made a great film some 53 years after it first appeared in print, so there's your answer!
  • After reading through them all in order I would agree that OHMSS is the least dated of the novels. QoS is probably the most dated of all the stories as it's set in a world (the world of the colonies) that simply doesn't exist anymore. But this was more or less the case at the time it was written so was probably intentional.

But the story itself is timeless. It could have been set today.

It was quite different from the book though if you think about it.

Well, of course it was an updating, but the basic story was much the same to my mind. It's a lot more faithful to Fleming than much of what came before in my view.
