    I think it's mathematically incorrect to assume that downvoting entries with a low score makes the game shorter. Each post withdraws one point from the system.
    The only way to make the game a bit shorter is to provide the winner with a large winning margin, because those winner's points won't have to be downvoted. On the flip side, a large winning margin tends to make the game less interesting. :--)

    Your assumption is correct.
    Imagine a game with only 2 entries of 10 points each, A and B, where A is everyone's favorite. If every vote goes to A, the game ends after 5 rounds (A wins with 15 points, B loses with 0 points). So, when there are clear preferences, the game is over quickly, because the 15 points of the winner are left over.

    Now imagine a game, where in each other round B is preferred over A. The voting goes 10-10, 11-8, 9-9, 10-7, 8-8, 9-6, and so on until 4-1, 2-2, and finally 3-0 after 17 rounds. So without clear preferences, there are more rounds, because also many points of the final winner (and other favorites when there are more than 2 entries) will have been subtracted during the course of the game.

    Next, if the least favorite contestants are quickly eliminated, no one can upvote them later on and prolong the game. However ( @j_w_pepper take note) imagine that the two last entries standing are hotly contended (as seems to be the case here with cats and crocodiles), all remaining points might need to be battled out until one of them wins (with a margin of 1 or 2 points). In this case nothing was gained by eliminating the weak contestants first, because the winner's margin is minimal.

    Ooh, I know why I dropped maths in eleventh grade (as soon as I could) and never missed any of the stuff that was yet to come in the last two years. Either way, I find it preferable to get rid of obvious duds and concentrate on those that have a chance.
