While I did hate the film, I have to admit that the wall gadget was absolutely brilliant. it really made the Russia scenes for me.
If the entire film was made up of those Russia scenes - ie, instead of having a plot about a nuclear war, limit it to the IMF identifying a Russian agent who killed one of their own - then GHOST PROTOCOL would have bene damn near perfect.

I think it WAS perfect, I liked it alot better than QOS and a tiny bit better than CR, best spy film since the bourne identity!!!!

It was great I've seen it. I seen the last 3 Mission:Impossible movies. Andreas Wisniewski return as short credit, You problemly remember him as Necros as the evil Henchman in The Living Daylights, In the first Mission:Impossible movie he played the Henchman for The mob who was a women name Max. She was played By Vessnessa Redgrave who was once Timothy Dalton Girlfriend in the early years & did a some movies with Timothy Dalton. We never what happen to him in the First M:I movie whether he was arrested or got away. In this one he was the Tom Cruise Prison Man who take him to his prison mate.
Forgive me for not looking at the IMDBInternational Movie Data Base He in M:I movies as Fog's Contact. Yes I was right it was him. He didn't look very dangerous then He was as Necros in The Living Daylights.

Hehe, the whole movie was a bit more Bond-like then usual. Let me summarize some comparisons:
--> Indeed, Andreas Wisniewski returns for a cameo. Probably Tom Cruise thought over this.....to let us Bond fans go crazy. Well done ;-)!
--> There is now a full pre-credits sequence, followed by a nicely designed main title sequence with scenes from the movie in it. Very Goldfinger-esque.
--> Then there are the gadgets of Simon 'Q' Pegg. He's simply a hilariously funny character and is responsible for the funny moments.
--> Ethan Hunt looks flabbergasting in his black tie when he joings Hunt-girl Jane on the Bombai party. The Bombai party reminds me of Carver's Hamburg party scene.
--> Then there is this exquisit sandstorm carchase which sees the return of Bond's former car brand BMW.
--> 'Q' talked about it in TWINE, but to see Jane actually using the heads up display in the BMW is simply cool.
--> Bond's mountaineering capabilities on the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, St. Cyrils are comparable to Ethan's mindblowing work on the Burj Dubai, allthough the latter is truly trendsetting and is more unforgettable for years to come.
--> And the whole 'villain steals a nuclear bomb' theme is very much like TSWLM. Actually, I found the actual launch of the nuclear bomb amazing :D.
--> Actually, blowing up the Kremlin. Really, SPECTRE would have loved this sequence.
--> Tom Wilkinson could do as some kind of 'M' in this film.
--> Then there are the fantastically filmed underwater scenes in Moscow. See the shooting bullets in the water is pretty damn nice work.
--> Tom Cruise himself then....What shall I say. I confuse Tom's self performed stunt scenes with Daniel Craig's work for his past two Bond flicks: Amazing, mindblowing, nailbiting, skincrawling.
--> And last but not least, this is the first M:I-film that actually gets a title. IMF Agent Ethan Hunt will return! Produced by Tom Cruise ;-)

Yes, 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' was my 'Bond film' of 2011. Thank you Tom, thank you Paramount and Bad Robot :).

I can see the resemblance but it's not really a nod to Goldfinger. The opening credits were a nod to the 1960s Mission: Impossible series which always opened with a montage of the episode that was about to follow. The 1996 M:I movie did the same thing, but sadly M:I 2 and M:I 3 didn't do it.

There is something inherently naff when girls fight. Looks ludicrous. Not that I would wish to get into a real fight with a tough girl. Her nails - ouch painful!

But girl fights look pathetic. As that clip of them fighting illustrates. I'll pass on GP and wait till it's out on Bluray/DVD. I thought the trailer looked naff although the bit with Cruise on the building looked cool - very James Bond-ish! And Cruise looks like Bond - now he's starting to age a bit more, makes him a bit more Bondish than Huntish (whatever that is!)

Disagree. I love a good catfight and the one in Ghost Protocol delivered. I always wished the Bond franchise had more of them. Not counting the one in FRWL (which wasn't related to the film's intrigue anyhow) and the overcoreographed one in Die Another Day (which was still more fun than the Graves/Bond fight happening a few doors down), we don't really have any.

I would have loved to see Anya Amasova and Naomi go at it in The Spy Who Loved Me considering the tension between the two during the Atlantis visit.

It's reported that Tom Cruise is interested to reprise his role once again as Ethan Hunt, along with Simon Pegg returning as Benji Dunn and Brad Bird is eyed to direct another film in the series.

Well we all saw this coming considering how well GP is doing at the Box Office. but still a nice find. I am hoping for another video game.

It's good news for sure. M:I is the only film series so far where each subsequent film impressed me more than its predecessor. Yes, that includes M:I 2 >> M:I (rather controversial choice, I know. ;-) ). Anyway, considering the quality of GP, I'd say bring . it . on! ;-)
  • GP was my favourite spy film since the bourne identity (yes I liked it better than CR, shoot me), so I can't wait for MI V. But im just wondering, what will happen when cruise gets too old???

not seen GP yet but from what i have seen and read? I will be happy and another film would be great! As for cruise getting old? Well? Like Bond? replace the actor but keep the charactor.

It wouldn't be unusual and it would continue the series.

If they ever make other M:I films without Cruise, I'd prefer a total reboot. I really want the team to be brought back in focus rather than to pin it all to one character with the rest of the lot being circumstantial and changing from film to film. I'd also love the return of Jim Phelps as chief director but without the curious twist they infused on his character in the De Palma film.

Brad Bird coming back would be the best news of all. You never know, this may come out in time for Christmas 2014.

I'd think after all those years of missions he couldn't even receive credit for, Phelps would have gone rogue many years before 1996, y'know (wait, did that movie come out in '96 or '98?)?

1996 was the first film. Then 2000, 2006 and 2011, of course.

I, for one, would enjoy them taking their time. Cruise has a good 5 years to reprise the role. If they can do it by 2014 and it be good, so be it. But if its no good, hopefully they're willing to delay it for quality.

One series where a total re-boot I would see fit. That'd be great right around 2018.

A few minor tweaks to that script could have kept the Phelps-is-a-traitor twist, but preserved the integrity of the character: have Phelps realise that his team is walking into a trap and then fake his own death to escape. This pulls Hunt out of sequence, so he survives, too. The rest of the film would revolve around Phelps feeding information to Hunt (though Hunt is initially unaware of who is helping him), knowing that the IMF will suspect Hunt of being a traitor, but also that he will try and prove his innocence.

The real twist would be that the mole accidentally died in the botched operation in Prague - but in order to prove it, Phelps and Hunt need to find and capture Max.

If they use the storyline at the end of the fourth, here:
Assuming Ethan's conversation about Terrorists taking control of the military's drones, or supposed 'terrorists'

I think we'd have a very good film on our hands. Further:
I know conspiracy is sort of cliche, but have it where they are Yugoslovian 'terrorists' or from the similar region, but in reality its and IMF or ex-IMF agent who was stationed in that country during the civil war and is now getting revenge on the IMF for whatever reason. The film could end, as Cruise's last, with the IMF being shut down, and he gets to go home to his wife. Happy ending.

Then around 2016-2018 reboot the franchise, same IMF, same Ethan Hunt, just different actor and storyline. More team based with the MI:GP mix of humor, gadgets, and action. Just better story.

I don't think the mission briefing at the end of GHOST PROTOCOL is intended to foreshadow anything. It's a bit like the ending of QUANTUM OF SOLACE - when Bond rescued Corinne Veneau from Yusuf, a lot of people assumed that BOND 23 would focus on Canada because Corinne was Canadian. But that wasn't the case at all; the ending was written in such a way that Corinne was in a similar position as Vesper in CASINO ROYALE, but Bond was able to get closure by preventing Corinne from having to commit treason. Why Quantum was interested in here was not the point.
In the same way, the briefing at the end of GHOST PROTOCOL is intended to show that Hunt has no regrets over staging Julia's death. It is something he did voluntarily, and he has not had second throughts about it. Besides, I think the mission briefing itself is written as a nod to the television series - the three acts of the film proper are almost extended episodes of the series that are strung together - and so the writers threw in a briefing that sounds like the kind of thing the original "Mission: Impossible" team would have dealt with, rather than trying to set up a fifth film.

    .

It seems odd to hint at the plot with
Vig Rhames (sp?) saying see you in Khandahar
and then the mission briefing including
    terrorists contolling drones

But you could very well be correct. Did you like my cliche storyline any? ahah

I dropped a Spoiler by accident, its fixed now. Sorry if you saw it!

Edited the two posts above, as they contain potential spoilers for those who have not seen GP yet.
As for MI:V using the mission mentioned at the end of GP for the plot, I don't think so.
At the end of MI : 1, Ethan Hunt is on a plane, when the stewardess hands him his mission to Aruba. Which we never see.
It's just a quirky little way to end the films, sending the hero off on another mission to save the world. Similar to how the Bond films pts used to show Bond finishing his current mission, before the film proper.

That will be great. But Coming Soon & Empire didn't come up anything of this. But it will great.
Well, the idea is only just being tossed around in the wake of GHOST PROTOCOL's mid-December release. With the Christmas-New Year break following about a week later, Coming Soon and Empire no doubt wanted to get their January 2012 issues finalised as soon as possible. By the time Cruise and Pegg expressed interest in a fifth film, it was too late to change the magazines. So it's hardly surprising that they haven't said anything.

    Understandable. Thank you.

And they mentioned the location, or issues directly related to the location's region not just once, twice. A bit odd in my opinion.
  • They also mentioned having a crime organization known as the Syndicate, which was the original "Spectre" for the TV Mission Impossible series.

I would definitely love to see the older characters reintroduced rightfully, unlike Jim Phelps in the 1st film.
  • I liked the 4th one, easily my second favorite in the series behind the original. Still liked the more serious tone of the first one as opposed to the sequels though. A 5th one seems to be inevitable with the success of MI:GP.
  • Got back from it a few hours ago. Wasn't interested at all in seeing it, but the positive reviews changed my mind. I enjoyed it, definitely better than the last 2, but I felt it got a little ridiculous and didn't like the fact that the main villain had so little screen time.

    My rankings:

    MI - 8/10
    MI2 - 5/10
    MI3 - 6/10
    MI4 - 7/10
