    Comic books.

I see. I think that'd work better as a comic book than a novel.

Just got an email from Eventbrite to say a ticket had become available, so now I will definitely be there. (Plan B was to show up and look hopeful.)

Next month sees the release of the Donald E Westlake book that was turned down as a movie for Pierce Brosnan. Pre-ordered it as it is a win-win situation excellent writer and a an interesting premise reading a proposed 007 story.

Must get that one myself. I take it that the character names will be changed?

Is this the one in Hong Kong that was proposed for TND?

(And @Dragonpol, if it's the one I'm thinking of, yes, the names and some story elements have been changed.)

I don't understand why they don't publish the novel as it's was originally written by Westlake, Fall of the city... Why make somes changements if he completed it ?

Well, it would obviously be an infringement of copyright law in the UK as James Bond is a copyrighted character and in order to release the novel with Bond as a character it would need to be sanctioned by IFP, which has not happened in this case. I suppose it's a bit like what Peter Vollmer did with Per Fine Ounce a few years ago.

Exepct that James Bond isn't appear in Fall of the city novel manuscript, Westlake has already renammed him George Mandeville...
  • Yes, I believe the novel was based upon the screenplay or screen treatment for Bond. Therefore all necessary changes were being made as the novel was written.

Charles Ardai of Hard Case Crime -- and, presumably, the Westlake family -- felt that the original Fall of the City manuscript needed to be edited, ostensibly for pacing reasons. The original version is 610 typewritten pages, the Hard Case Crime edition 240 pages [EDIT: An error by Amazon.com. It's actually 464 pages, according to Titan Books].

It should be noted that back in 1998 Westlake was discouraged from submitting the novel for publication (by his editor) partly because of the manuscript's length.

It was based on two story treatments (there was no screenplay). The treatments were covered in a recent issue of MI6 Confidential. You can read more about the similarities between the treatments and novel here at MI6:

Well, thanks for the clarification. So they cut 60% of the original novel, that's rude. I hope the afterword of the novel detaillied the changes Hard Case Crime have done to the publication and all that, because it is not precised on their website that they don't publish it like it was written originaly (it's not very honest).

Well, apparently I've gotten the wrong info about the page length from Amazon.com! Titan Books (the co-publisher w/ Hard Case Crime) and Kirkus Reviews are listing the novel as 464 pages, which is still edited but much less severely than a 60% reduction.

The afterword is by Jeff Kleeman, the MGM/UA executive who hired Westlake to work on the treatments.
