Casino Royale Recently Ranked #70 on Empire Magazine's Top 100 British Movies List (Linked)

edited October 2011 in Bond Movies Posts: 5,745
Today Empire Magazine's website, empireonline.com released a list of their top 100 British films. Our main man Craig in his debut outing as James Bond made the 70th spot on the list with Casino Royale. Goldfinger made a solid #16(!) on the list as well.

So that begs the question, of their 100, or your favorite picks, what are YOUR top British films. The criteria is open. I'm assuming this list goes off of anything to do with British directing and acting.

Sound off below, oh and here's the direct link to their list: http://www.empireonline.com/100britishfilms/default.asp?film=70

A good showing for Bond here. Two films out of 100 is good turn out. Maybe Empire has got something right! :-))
  • Empire definitely got it right, these are my top two Bond movies :-bd

Typical. Empire always gets it wrong.

CASINO ROYALE, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, PRISON OF AZKABAN, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, CONTROL, IN THE LOOP, HUNGER, MAN ON WIRE, ATONEMEANT, better than NAKED, BRAZIL, THE IPCRESS FILE, THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER and BRIGHTON ROCK?

    Triumph of the Nu.

    Old movies are lame.
  • I can't see the list as it won't show me, having some technical difficulties and all

You'd have to imagine that movies like The 39 Steps, The Third Man, Trainspotting (I couldn't understand most of the dialog), Get Carter, The Long Good Friday and Zulu would be up there somewhere

    What was Empire's #1 anyway

@Shark I was hoping you'd share you ever welcome wisdom with us here. Despite Bond getting a look in, this list is crap. Empire couldn't even understand what a prequel was!

    Lawrence Of Arabia.

FRWL and GE should have made the list, especially the former.

    CR
    GF
    Full Monty
    Chariots of Fire
    A Fish Called Wanda
    Shaun of the Dead
    Shakespear in Love
    Sexy Beast
    Any Python film
    Brazil

I'm fine with Lawrence being #1, it's pretty amazing.

FRWL absolutely! I can't understand it. If you took a poll, more would say FRWL than GF when asked the best of the two. Oh well.

My two favorite Bond films (CR & GF) both on the list; I can't complain ;-)

Although like others have stated, From Russia With Love perhaps deserves a spot on that list, also.
  • i find goldfinger slightly better than FRWL and it deserved to be up there, i love the film but i was suprised to see CR there, then again, it is 100 films

    my personal fave british films

1 hotfuzz. it should be banned in many countries for being that funny

2 licence to kill. see my ranking.

3 the living daylights. see my ranking

4 v for vendetta, i think its british anyway, it was set in britain. anyway, great film that covers alot of issues.

5 the inbetweeners movie. bring ya wellies, your gonna be knee deep in clunge. 2nd funniest film of the decade.

6 green street. another film which im not sure is entirely british (partly because of the american actors), but its a great film.

    7 goldfinger. see my ranking

8 borat. so offensive you feel slightly guilty when you laugh but cmon, you cant deny this film was hilarious

9 shaun of the dead. im a massive fan of simon pegg and nick frost. i seem to be one of the few who prefers hot fuzz over shaun of the dead though

10 28 days later. possibly my fave horror film ever. very entertaining.

Between 70 and 16, FRWL definitely should have a spot.

I'm not saying to tweet spam them how FRWL deserves top 20, but its @empireonline if you have anything to share ;)

It's only their opinion, and that's fine. I don't agree and that's my opinion and that's fine. They aren't completely free of bias. They put The Godfather as the best film ever, and I know that isn't true, so I'm not stressing.

maybe but i still think goldfinger was better. It set the tone for not just bond films but also alot of other action flicks. The PTS could have been a short film on its own. Still, its your opinion

Shaun of The Dead at 6!?!

    Hot Fuzz at 50?!?

Whos writing this drivel? I doubt even Simon Pegg himself would have the temerity to The Third Man below Shaun. And Hot Fuzz only 3 places behind The Wicker Man and a whopping 50 above CR?

    Ridiculous.

glares angrily at person who refuses to realise that hotfuzz is comedy genius and the greatest british film ever and better than CR although CR was awesome.

I'm surprised that CR made the list. If a Bond film had to be put on the list, there are far more deserving choices than CR.

True. I'd think FRWL deserves a spot, but I see why CR made it. It is a great film and reboot. My personal favorite nonetheless for all the substance in it. A conflicted Bond, a betrayal and mirrors the world in which we live in now. A very contemporary update.
  • I get a chance to see the list finally and Casino Royale at #70 and Goldfinger #16 was it, It's not even Connery's best, let alone the best Bond movie

Life of Brian at Number 2, can't agree with that

The Long Good Friday deserved a higher placing I thought, best UK gangster film some say, although a little dated now

BRIGHTON ROCK, GET CARTER, MONA LISA and SEXY BEAST are much better.
