top twenty films of last decade - amended. Best film of this year?

edited December 2011 in General Movies & TV Posts: 2,782
Just trying to compile a definitive 20. They have been some great movies and I'm struggling.

I know The Lord of Rings trilogy should be there (Counts as one). Amelie is another one, City of God and Oldboy. Then I get a bit stuck.

Any help will be more than welcome.

I would put Munich and Der Untergang in my top 10 of the 2000's... City of God and Oldboy I agree totally. The Prestige I would also put in top 10. I'll have to think of the rest.

Edit : ummmmmmmmmmm I'd add Sunshine.

Harry Brown !!!!!!!! Would definitly be in my top 5.
  • Harry Brown, good call. I'm torn between The Prestige and The Escapist. Der Untergang - I haven't seen, will dl it today and give it a go. I'm sure DC007 it'll be class as it's recommended by you.

    So far:

    1. Lord of the Rings (All of them)
    2. Old Boy.
    3. Harry Brown.
    4. City of God.
    5. Amelie (for me)

If you like gangster movies - I suggest Johnnie To's PTU and Breaking News. Classic action/gangster films. If I had to chose... Breaking News would be in my top 10.

Have you seen Munich, forgetmyusername ? That one is amazing.

Layer Cake ! How could I forget ! Another amazing British film. Snatch ! Just out in 2000, but a cult classic film aswell.
  • not seen munich yet. will give it a go. So 5 films to go.

how about UP, Momento and Michael Clayton? Do they deserve a top ten place?

UP, definatly. I really liked Michael Clayton, but would put in in my top 11 to 20. Memento is great, and would also put it in my top 20 but outside top 10.

Technically, I'd argue that Memento was released in the final year of the decade before the last decade. ;;)

My list, incomplete for the time being, would certainly include

    * Lost In Translation
    * The Social Network
    * Spirited Away
    * Hero

    Well, besides DAD( :-D )(JK),

    The Bourne Ultimatum
    I Am Legend
    The Dark Knight
    Erin Brocovich
    True Grit(new version)
    Zodiac
    Collateral
    Layer Cake
    The Pursuit of Happyness
    Taken
    Disturbia

Not all listed are worthy of the best of the 2000s, but they are all great films, and I know a lot of greats are slipping my mind.

Spirited Away - yes. Hero? I might go for Crouching Tiger.

So I might increase the the list to a top twenty now. DC007 I want Memento in there and Michael Clayton.

Forgot about Zodiac, that film really gave me the creeps..Dark Knight is up there but so many choices. I really need to be picky.

I'm trying to set up my Christmas viewing during the holidays and when I've finally bought myself a 46inch TV with Blue Ray.

I'll add Oceans 11 to my top twenty - because it's so stylish and watchable. A modern classic?

Just finished DL Munich. I'll let you know.

    Thank you gentleman.

I would add 'After The Wedding' - amazing Danish film by Susanne Bier with Mads Mikkelsen. (top 15).

Also : 'The Diving Bell and the Buttlerfly' with Mathieu Amalric (top 20).

'I Killed My Mother', Canadian film by 19 years old director Xavier Dolan would also be in my top 20.

'In The Loop' with the amazing Peter Capaldi would be in my top 10.

'The Wave', brilliant German film would be in my top 20.

forgetmyusername, if you and I will have Harry Brown in our top 3, then we must have 'Taken' in a top 20. The birth of action bad-ass hero Liam Neeson cannot be overlooked.

Casino Royale needs to be there!
  • Casino Royale needs to be there!
I would love too. But no chance. I really am off the whole reboot idea and the last two films. I even miss the cheese of PB.

    When will James Bond return?

Taken - is ok but as a film meh. But as Bad ass anti-hero you're spot on. As a film there is one or three problems; Bourne. I think you'll agree they are far better films. But Neeson has created a character that I want to see more off.

    Agreed.

Harry Brown defo in my top 3.

    So in no particular order:

    Harry Brown.
    Lord of all the Rings.
    Old Boy.

Now I'm off to think about the next 17 and DC007 you have given me a lot material to get through. Munich is on now and then all those foreign recommends.

Wow - some good ones there. I've got to have Saw in. Ground-breaking horror. But in the horror genre section choices; Saw or REC?

Plus do I have Matrix Reloaded for the best chase scene ever in the history of cinema and Monica Bellucci for being the most beautiful woman in the world. Two films to think about.

forgetmyusername, I would add the phenomenal 'Letters From Iwo Jima', one of the truly great war films, and the best film directed by Clint Eastwood. 'Flags From Our Fathers' was good, but doesn't hold a candle to the other one.
  • No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Inception, The Departed and DC007's right about Letters From Iwo Jima :)

Spirited Away - yes. Hero? I might go for Crouching Tiger.
I might as well, however CTHD was released in 2000. That's the final year of the 'nineties'.

Though I took the liberty of including three films from 2010, I figure that the film production started either before or around 2009. These are by no means perfect films, but are still my top 20 faves from a weak decade in film.

    1. The American (2010)
    2. Munich (2005)
    3. I Heart Huckabees (2004)
    4. Anthony Zimmer (2005)
    5. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
    6. Inception (2010)
    7. Sleuth (2007)
    8. Casino Royale (2006)
    9. Quantum of Solace (2008)
    10. A History of Violence (2005)
    11. The Tailor of Panama (2001)
    12. Hot Fuzz (2007)
    13. Ghost Writer (2010)
    14. Michael Clayton (2007)
    15. The Royal Tennenbaums (2001)
    16. Femme Fatale (2002)
    17. Kill Bill 1 & 2 (2003/ 2004)
    18. CQ (2001)
    19. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
    20. Ripley's Game 2002

    Bonus Guilty pleasure:

OSS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies (2006)

But what was the first year on the calendar ? If it was year 0, then you'd be right. But we started with year ONE (1), so the first decade ended with year 10, thus the 1990's ended in 2000.

That reasoning makes logical sense and as far as the centaries go (this centary, the 21st is from 2001 - 2100) you are correct though the decade of the 2010's is cited as beginning in 2010 and will end in 2019. With every source available today agreeing with these viewpoints why would one argue anything different?
  • Believe me, the 1990's ended in 1999

    The 2000's began in 2000

I think that's how 99.9 per cent of the earths population would see it, and I'm one of 'em

Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3 must be included!
Casino Royale is a worthy top twenty, it being the best of the three from this decade.
I would also include Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Fred Clause, and both Night at the Museums into the list for the comedy movies

But is it mathematicly wrong. There wasn't a year 0, was there ? Just as Craig is said to be the 6th (official) Bond, when in reality he is the 7th.

ummmm enough material for a film here, as I believe:

The new decade started on January 1st, 2011. There was no year 0 (our calendar went from 1 BC to 1 AD with no 0 inbetween). So the first decade started with the year 1, the second decade with the year 11, the third decade with the year 21, and so on.

This decade and century started on January 1, 2001 and ended December 31, 2010.

    or

Think of it from the beginning. The first century was the period from the year 1 to the year 100. That means that the years 101-200 couldn't be the first, despite being in the 100's. If you count up the centuries, you see that the period 1901-2000 is the 20th 100-year period, not the 19th.

As for why the neww millennium begins with the year 2001 instead of 2000, it's because the numbering scheme begins with 1 instead of 0. The first ten years (decade) were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 (count them, it makes ten). So, the first decade ended with the year 10 and the second decade began with the year 11 (and ended with the year 20). Likewise, the first century began with the year 1 and ended with the year 100, the first millennium began with the year 1 and ended with the year 1000. The second millennium, then, began with the year 1001 and will end with the year 2000.

    or

Because time started from zero not one. The years 0-100 are the first century. 101 -200 are the second and so on. So 1900-2000 is the 20th. 2001 is the start of the next century and millenium.

    more confused now.
