The location hopping-diarrhea syndrome

Some Bond movies do a lot of it. Some are moderate globe-trotters. Some need it for the story, others just do it for the sake of racking up some air-miles. It's what I term 'Location Hopping-Diarrhea'.
For those who may be interested... (not to be taken too seriously, FYI):
(MI6 only scenes in M’s office don’t count)

DN - London, Jamaica.
To the point and no needless globetrotting. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 0/5

FRWL – England, Turkey, former Yugoslavia, Venice
Locations that are necessary for the story, almost no superfluous travelling. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 1/5

GF – Mexico, Miami, England (various), Switzerland, USA (MD & KY)
First of the true globetrotter Bondfilms. Nothing too overboard though. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 3/5

TB – France, England (various), Bahamas
Less globetrotting than usual. Takes it’s time to explore each location. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 1/5

YOLT – Hong Kong, Japan (various locations)

Same as above. Copied the TB ‘idea’ of setting the whole thing in once large connected country/area. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 1/5

OHMSS – Portugal, England (various), Switzerland (various)
Has a mild tendency to thrust you from one place to another. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 2/5

DAF – Portugal/Japan/Egypt/France/Latin America (somewhere…), Netherlands, South Africa, USA (NV & CA)
Chr’ Almighty. Was this really necessary? Luckily it calms down after the PTS. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 4/5

LALD – New York, Louisiana, San Monique (fictional), Jamaica

Reasonably focused locations, integral to the story. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 2/5

TMWTGG – Lebanon, Hong Kong/Macau, Thailand
Same as above, really. Doesn’t feel too jumpy. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 2/5

TSWLM – Austria, Scotland (naval base), Egypt (various), Italy

This is where the series really started to get jumpy. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 3.5/5

MR – somewhere over Africa, USA (CA), Venice, Brazil (various), Earth’s-orbit (go figure...)
The 'Kyoto-killer'. This one just has the most scandalous carbon footprint. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 4/5

FYEO – London, Greece (various), Spain, Italy, Albania

Not entirely innocent of jumping from one place to another, but at least it’s all within a short-haul flight. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 3/5

OP – Non-descript South/Central American nation, London, India, Germany
More focused than the usual Moore outing. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 2/5

AVTAK – Siberia (USSR), England, France (various), USA (CA)
Roger bows out with yet another visit to the USA. God knows why. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 2/5

TLD – UK (yes, Gibraltar is still ours, amigos :-) ) , Czechoslovakia, England, Austria, Morocco, Afghanistan
Seen as Vienna & Bratislava are so close and integral to the story we will overlook some of the hopping here. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 3/5

LTK – USA (FL), Bahamas, Rep of Isthmus (fictional Central American nation - but so obviously Mexico though)
No mucking about here. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 1/5

GE – Russia (various), Monte Carlo, Cuba
Shoots in and out of various places. Par for the course, really. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 2/5

TND – Khyber Pass (fight it out amongst yourselves, please), England, Germany, Vietnam

Some hopping for the sake of it here. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 3/5

TWINE – Spain, London, Scotland, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey
Plenty of superfluous travelling here. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 4/5

DAD – North Korea, South Korea (for those who knew there was a difference), Hong Kong, Cuba, England, Iceland
Was there any point to it all? Really? Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 5/5

CR – Czech Rep., Madagascar, Uganda, Bahamas, USA (FL), Montenegro, Italy
Too many places crammed into a good film. Would we have noticed if Miami hadn’t featured? Not really. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 4/5

QoS – Italy, England, Haïti, Austria, Bolivia, Russia

Blink and you’ll miss it (the location). Shortest Bondfilm ever gets around in a big way. Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 5/5

SF – Turkey, England, China, Macau, Scotland
All that malarkey just to end up in the Highlands… Location hopping-diarrhea factor: 3/5

Hard to add anything @AceHole, a superb analysis. I prefer a list of where Bond has been as opposed to where the film crew has been in order to make somewhere look like somewhere Bond has been....even I'm lost now.

MR got off lightly I must say (4/5), especially with it's obvious globe hopping set up (including outer space), but I guess they somehow convinced us that it was integral to the story.

QOS was just bonkers - Italy, then off to England, crosses the ocean to Haiti, goes back the other way to Austria, detour back to Italy, crosses the ocean a 3rd time to go to Bolivia, and then a 4th trip across the ocean to Russia.

But yes, as much as I love MR, that globe trotting was almost criminal in that outing. But, on the other hand, you really had this epic scope feel to the film.

Well yes, but can we really count the Earth's orbit as a 'location'..? But as I say, MR had a horrendous carbon-footprint and no doubt had hippies everywhere frantically compensating for 007's emissions by cutting back on soy sauce & non-local produce etc...

Inventive term! ;) Well, I must say I don't mind location diarrhea. Globetrotting is an integral part of Bond for me, and even when exaggerated I can't say it does much harm. All the galmorous locations is one of the highlights of Moonraker for instance, one of the main reasons I actually enjoy rewatching it now and then. It helps that I am a globetrotter myself and can fondly rememeber my own trips to most of the locations Bond visits.

It is a much bigger problem when the locations are uninteresting or badly used, or when they use an obviously different location to pose as another. It pisses me of when North Korea is filmed in England, Spanish city Cadiz poses as Cuba and we can hardly see enything of Iceland in amongst obvious mat paintings, sound stages and CGI in DAD for instance. That is just too much cheating in one film, don't you think? Or when they manage to make potentially interesting locations as Istanbul and Aserbaidjan look so incredibly dull in TWINE. Vegas is another vey boring location in DAF... there are a few more examples of spoiled potential and cheap short cuts, but I won't og on a long tirade. :)

I'd say more locations, yes please! But make them interesting!

I think Isthmus is supposed to be a fictionalized Panama.

About the Gibraltar remark, I wish I could say that Barcelona is ours (Catalan), but it's still Spanish, amics.

TRIVIA: Catalan Bay's name is due to some of my compatriots helping you Brits against the Spaniards. \m/ So if you go vacationing to Salou or Barcelona, remember to leave nice tips ;;)

Although DAF has a busy PTS, 4/5 seems high for the film as a whole. Personally I still associate it as the 'Vegas Bond film'.

    Casino Royale
    UK / Italy / Czech Republic / Bahamas -4

Should been 7: Oeganda, Madagaskar and Montenegro

    Montenegro double for Italy.

The list you're looking at @M_Balje is actual filming locations.
If you check the list at the top of the thread, you'll find the fictional one.

Oeganda, Madagaskar and Montenegro are part of actual filming locations, that's why i at them to your list of 4. So i not comment on the fictional list.

No @M_Balje, Uganda was filmed in UK, Madagascar was filmed in the Bahamas, Miami Airport was Czech Republic/UK and Montenegro scenes were filmed in Czech Republic. So CR is just 4 filming locations with Italy.

    Correct :>
Bond does seem to be immune from vomiting & 'the runs'. Especially India, Vietnam and Haïti are places where you would expect some degree of leakage...

Well, Bond does usually spend a lot of time in the bathroom...

Not very complicated really... Bathroom scenes pop up everywhere in all Bond films, and its not always explained exactly what he does there... Maybe his stomach isn't as resistant as we're made to believe...

No. A PTS should be a focused affair and DAF just blatantly disregards any of the ingredients that make a good PTS.
And anyway, Vegas was a bit of a crap(s) :D location to begin with.
True but the different scenes in the PTS are so quick that as a whole, the film doesn't seem as hop, skip and jump to me, even if it actually is.

Apparently Ken Adam at the time hated the idea of them filming in Vegas. I was in Vegas last year and it's a different world. DAF seems way more dated than the ones before!
