Roger Moore once said - and I think he is right in this - that a star has a certain personality that they portray and that when you cast a star for a role, they bring their personality to the role. For Sean Connery, this was a masterstroke. He was ambitious, tight with money, gritty, slightly rough but with the edges smoothed away through opportunity and Terrence Young and he was natural in front of the camera. In addition, he had looks which were dark and broody and an athletic way about him that Dana Broccoli describes as 'feline'. And she was right. He played Bond brilliantly although his performance did drop off in YOLT (in a sense the film was trying to outshine him really) and especially in DAF where he seemed to be unprepared and puffy for the role but in parts, still played it well. In truth all the actors brought something to the part. But I don't think Daniel's Bond was as good as Sean. And I say all this as a RM fan.

  • Very mixed feelings. The Bond films under Daniel have become almost exclusively about his thuggish Bond to the exclusion of many of the things people admired in the earlier films - notably the effortlessness of Bond. Gun fight scenes just remind me…
  • I judge this solely by what what I heard in the cinema, and I was expecting great things - but for me it was completely forgettable apart from the John Barry references notably - We have all the time in the world. I think it was a really missed opp…
  • This whole episode highlights the need to actually go back to stand alone films. And Craig with his thuggish Bond is an impediment to that I suspect. In my view the best thing they could have done is started with a fresh actor and a new lighter m…
  • The bit about the money, I think is irrelevant. Once you have a certain amount of money, will it really change your life ? How many cars or Rolex watches do you need ? Surely it is about the work that you do. Roger Moore in the 70's had a 5% c…
  • Personally I would be happy for Craig to move on. The four movies he has done have completed the arc on 'his' storyline and I really felt that Spectre didn't really feel like a Bond film to me anymore. There is a certain sophistication missing, a c…
  • Here's the link to Tommy Atkins for comparison... think Roger was a bit choked up after that letter he recalled (see above)....
