I couldn't exactly rate them out of 10, but I could say which ones had the best locations. Here are my favorites for locations:

    -Thunderball
    -Diamonds Are Forever
-The Man with the Golden Gun
    -The Spy Who Loved Me
    -Moonraker
    -For Your Eyes Only
    -Tomorrow Never Dies
    -The World is not Enough
    -Casino Royale

Hmm, interesting, you rank the locations of DAF among the best?
  • I wouldn't rate them out of 10 but I will give special mention to both of Martin Campbell's films. GE was the first Bond film where I really noticed how beautifully shot it was in places (especially the sunset beach scene in Cuba).

But CR looked exquisite to me. First of all the cinematography was in aid of the film but it was also interesting and beautiful. Several shots that would have been very "standard" in another film were made interesting through angle, composition, and lighting. Like Bond leaping off of the tractor in the construction site:

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_0141.htm

The establishing shots of the crane fight giving it a sense of place:

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_0173.htm

The beautiful establishing shots of Nassau (the bright blue of the water was incredible!) and Montengro:

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_0649.htm

In fact, the really did a good job of establishing the beauty of Bond's world in that film:

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_1079.htm

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_1197.htm

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_1271.htm

    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_1538.htm

And that's not even counting some of the interesting choices - black and white PTS, the fuzzy/overexposed film when Bond is suffering from poisoning, the confused POV when he's carried from the wreck of the Aston Martin - interesting but not so artsy and overdone to distract from the film (cough*QoS*cough). And the colours really popped in that film. Most beautifully shot Bond film of all, IMHO.

@royale65: Yeah, I know that must have been a shocker! I just really like the Las Vegas setting, which is where the majority of the movie takes place. Also, some of the interior sets were nice, like Whyte's penthouse, the Whyte House hotel, and the oil rig.

Thanks very much for the list, @chrisisall! That's great info and interesting to read all together in this list of cinematographers.

Deakins also did another favorite of mine: The Shawshank Redemption
I read an article on him and he said that (paraphrasing now ...) some people thought it was just natural light, no special lighting. But he had to light everything like crazy, apparently - the inside of the prison was tricky lighting because everywhere was dark and he had to make it visible and yet look like natural lighting.
The man is a genius. He and Freddie Young (YOLT, Doctor Zhivago, and Lawrence of Arabia), both geniuses. Just outstanding.

I am dying to know the cinematographer for Bond 24. Man, I hope we learn that this summer.

It was actually a lot of fun (& very informative) to compile. IMDB is my friend. ;)
My big surprise was Adrian Biddle for TWINE (he ALSO did Willow, Thelma & Louise and Stallone's Judge Dredd); now I know why it had that inky, moody look to it.
