The DANIEL CRAIG Appreciation thread - Discuss His Life, His Career, His Bond Films

edited March 2020 in Actors Posts: 6,601
After what happened yesterday, I feel its high time, he finally gets one of these, too. All the others seems to have them, so people can voice praise and appreciation without getting attacked for it AND not being allowed to defend their opinion either. So here we go and even though I don't expect this to grow fast (a lot on both sides has been said in the last few months) it can be used for future news and whatever comes to mind - like Bradys nice vid, he posted yesterday.

Is there really a need for a separate thread for this Germanlady seeing as you already hijack every other thread to heap praise on DC as it is!

Only poor old Laz doesn't have one now. Anybody else fancy starting one for him? Anyway, I'll have to bump the Dalts one to give you competition @Germanlady.

Craig isn't my favourite but he's done a great job so far. I'm not a huge fan of his first two but he's good in both of them, in CR he gives one of the best Bond performances of the series. His fight scenes in his first two are brilliant (SF was a step down in that department I think), I think the staircase scrap is up there with Bond vs Grant, Bond vs Necros, etc.

Well the reason is, that praise is unwelcome by some, who invade every positive post about him themselves, like good ole RC7, who couldn't resist again. You guys can laugh at me all you want, without yesterdays exhibition of vicious attacks this thread wouldn't be there, BUT it seems, even here, its not save. I am sorry, its so hard to take that some
want to blow some smoke up his arse?, as RC7 pointed out so nicely. If you guys wanna make this another war zone, go ahead. I suppose, we might both get banned over it, but play your little game.

Other then that, this is an appreciation thread, so stay out of it.

@Royale - brings up the Dalts, no problem :)

I didn't say a word and had no intention to. I just laughed at the Wizard. Sue me.

    @RC7 and @Germanlady

You both seem well-trained in the arts of subtle provocation. Perhaps the time is now to deny each other the pleasure of sinking deeper in what is to become an endless spirale of offensive bickering.

Come on, friends, we have a lot to worry about as it is. This is one fight we don't feel like having.

    Thank you.

    Very good.

But in fairness the thread is about appreciation and Germanlady is entitled to create it if she wants so I say good luck to her. Besides I love DC myself and think hes doing a wonderful job so I might even come on here occasionally. The only difference is I dont hold him and SF above any criticism like she does.

  • Well i reckon that Daniel Craig gives an outstanding performance creating the perfect balance between the emotional and violent aspects of the James bond character Y

Craig is a titan who grinds brozzer bond into the gravel with the heel of his foot.

The bonds have not been so acclaimed, profitable or esteemed as in his tenure.

I feel sorry for the poor bugger who comes after him...

A lot of people said that about Brosnan - they couldn't imagine whoever came after him reaching anywhere near the same popularity!

The situation with Brosnan and Craig reminds me of Matt Smith replacing David Tennant in Doctor Who. Both Brosnan and Tennant were very much "stars" who brought their franchises to huge levels of popularity not seen for a very long time. Because of that, their fans were very sorry to see them go and people were wary of the actors who would follow them. Then , when Craig and Smith were both announced, there was a shocked response to their casting with a lot of people wondering how the powers that be could have got it all so wrong (Craig's looks, Smith's age).

Yet both Craig and Smith delivered exceptional performances, won over a lot of their critics (there will always be those who revel in their stubbornness), showed that you could still find new things to do with the character, and continued or exceeded the popular love of their predecessors. So, while my initial reaction would be "I don't envy whoever follows them" I'm prepared to be surprised and impressed :-)

Strangely enough i agree with you but i think craig and smith are very rare creatures born for the roles and their own personas mirror the roles. Actors in a million you might say who showed up their predecessor.

Both producers might get lucky again - or they may not.

IMO, it will be like it has always been - The King is dead, long live the king. If the new fella isn't a total flop, they will find and talk about all the faults, they always saw in DC and which they NOW remember.

I think Daniel Craig has done an excellent job as James Bond. I recall joining this very forum the day he was announced as the new OO7. How time flies.
I have never hid the fact that I was dubious about his casting, and wasn't totally sold on him at first. But I always gave him a fair go, right the way through filming of Casino Royale, when all the hate sites, and so called Bond fans turned against him. (Not saying you're not a Bond fan if you don't like Daniel Craig...not going down that path again)
Merely gave him the benefit of the doubt, before he proved himself in the role.
I am happy to say I find CR a great Bond film, and one of my favourites, thanks mainly to Craigs portrayal of Bond. In my opinion he's the best Bond since Timothy Dalton, and like Dalton, I see a real Fleming style of Bond in Craigs intereptation of the character.
As far as QOS goes, I think he again gave as much as possible, and considering the weakness of the story and script, does an amicable job. I cannot say that the film is one I hold any time for, and consider it a mess, and a massive let down, after such a strong debut.
Thankfully Skyfall has shown me that Craig is the right man for the role, giving a stunning performance, the equal of his turn in CR. He looks much more comfortable in the role, and brings a much needed sense of humour to the part, that has been missing in his two previous films.
I very much look forward to Bond 24, to see what Daniel Craig will bring to the part and know that he has the acting ability to keep Bond fans happy.
That said, I am often asked by people who know I am a Bond fan who the best is, or who my favourite Bond is...To this is answer all of them. All the actors have brought something to the role, all of them, have wowed me, made me smile, made me want to be like them...made me wanna be Bond. They all in my opinion have proven themselves in the role, and made me want to continue being a Bond fan. With Daniel Craig, I feel I am in safe hands as a Bond fan.

Clooney has been location hunting for some time now in Berlin for The Monuments Men and is seen all over town for dinner. Last night he obviously picked up a check for a business man of 134,- € because he thought, his people had been too noisy. Shooting starts in March. I hope for German papers really pick up on it, so that we get a nive coverage of this WWII thriller.

Craig certainly will leave a shadow as big as Connery. I think the next guy has to bring his own take on Bond plus he has to be a great actor not someone who people think looks like Bond, look at the awfulness with Brosnan imo. Craig has made the franchise massive again and probably more critical acclaim its ever been given. so yeah the shadow will be big but lets hope he's a great actor.

Oh Dan, no amount of praise is enough to fully recognize you as the best Bond since Sean's era.

At #2 and seriously challenging Sean, Dan has brought back a heart to Bond that we saw in Sean's era and got a wonderful glimpse of in Tim's impressive yet short era. His interpretation has made me realize why I love Bond so much: His serious, gritty, and emotive performances give Bond the dimensions such a class A character deserves. He is a new Bond for his day, a man who bleeds, missteps, and sheds tears for fallen comrades and lovers alike. If not for Dan most of my time would be spent here praising Sean and Tim. He gave me a refreshed reason to love Bond and all he is with the likes of CR, QoS and Skyfall. The minute I saw CR I fell instantly in love. How he handled the tough Bond who was rough around the edges was masterful, and I knew great things were coming in the future. In addition, his first three films are like a grand journey, where each carries into the other as Bond grows from a reckless rookie to a competent agent of great courage and loyalty. His chemistry with Dame Judi as M is the very heart of the era, and with this relationship CR, QoS and Skyfall now officially encompass The M Trilogy in my eyes. The bond ( ;) ) between them is so palpable, and so grown after what they have been through all these years that it makes the other Bond/M relationships look amateurish in comparison. To see them go from angry boss and misbehaving employee to proud boss and accomplished employee is heart warming and an immaculate part of the films and Bond history in general. It took the characters beyond the desk briefings and gave a compassion to their relationship. M is like a mother to Dan's Bond, and with his chemistry with Judi you feel that, right up until the moment when
you realize that Bond is M's greatest legacy as she passes away to a much better and deserved rest.
Seeing Bond running to save her in Skyfall against the recitation of Tennyson and Newman's powerful score represents everything Bond can and should be to me, and is the reason why I love the character so much. He retains his loyalty at any cost, even when it gets personal, and he never gives up no matter how beaten down or exhausted he is. Dan's performances in this regard are the best of the series, a perfect mix of brutality and suave, and also so deep, emotive and evocative of the best of Bond in his every mannerism and word. This, in addition to his unmatched dedication to the role and all its responsibilities prove that decades from now Bond fans both come and gone will look back at Daniel Craig's Bond era and smile fondly at a man who truly was the embodiment of James Bond 007.

Much love to you Dan, and thanks for everything both now and in the future. :)>-

I would disagree with you regarding Craig. I think that Matt Smith brings a lot of his own personality to The Doctor, but Craig is very much playing a character when he plays Bond. I'm not saying that because Craig isn't a playboy womanizer - he's not but then neither is Smith a 1,000 year-old Time Lord.

When Craig does an interview now he comes across as much more confident which may be from being in the spotlight for a long time, but I think is also something his agent or the studios have worked on. The more he seems like Bond the more marketable he is. But in the beginning he came off as shy, a little goofy, and nervous. I remember one interview where the woman interviewing him was surprised that he had a "high pitched giggle" and another being shocked to find out that Craig was listening to the soundtrack to Grease on his iPod. While some CNB types will leap on this as proof that "Craig is not Bond" to me it makes his commanding, self-assured performances even more impressive. I mean, with Connery and Lazenby you get a sense that they were, to a degree, just being themselves on screen. But being able to act authoritative and commanding is an incredibly difficult thing to do, so kudos to Craig for that!

Whatever your thoughts on Daniel Craig as James Bond he has had the last laugh on all the doubters/haters. Millions of people have gone to see his films, and Skyfall is now the highest grossing Bond film of all time (inflation adjusted).

The fact is most people accept/like or even love him as James Bond. The box office stats prove it. I think most people relate to Craig and his interpretation of James Bond. I would guess that's the reason for the success of his Bond films. The old James Bond is dead (RIP) -the new version is alive and well in the 21st century.

"I remember one interview where the woman interviewing him was surprised that he had a "high pitched giggle"

Yes, I've seen Craig giggle in interviews. It's quite funny. Not very Bond-like but funny. :D

He says himself, that "I am as far removed from this character as I can be" and after having watched him for years, I would say, its half true. Yes, he is shy, nervous, still not a limelight" person, not a macho, but if you see him tell a reporter where to stick his silly question, THEN you can see a bit of Bond in him. ;). So - behind the giggle, the warm heart, lives a harder edged bad boy..

Even though you write this to bitch again in such a grown up fashion, you are not even wrong. He would - no doubt - do exactly that, if anybody ever dared to do that. If he would see that and gets out of the house, you better run. I don't think, he would actually hurt anybody physically, but he can be scary enough, I think, without having to do that. Not all his Bond attitude is acting ;)
