Phoebe Waller-Bridge Cary Fukunaga and Scott Z Burns needs to be the new writing team for the franchise, Purvis and Wade have to go since they can never write a proper script by themselves.

Granted, P & W's scripts usually need polishing, but the main story beats are surely what tempted CJF to accept the project in the first place? So I'd be intrigued to see their original draft.

Purvis and Wade have to go since they can never write a proper script by themselves.

How many Bond films have been scripted by just one person?

Bond films scripted by one person:

YOLT - Roald Dahl (but with additional story material by Harold Jack Bloom)
OHMSS - Richard Maibaum (but with some additional dialogue by Simon Raven)
Live and Let Die - Tom Mankiewicz
Moonraker - Christopher Wood (although Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais did some uncredited work on it)
Tomorrow Never Dies - Bruce Feirstein (with a few other writers uncredited)

It's more usual for writing in films to be a collaborative effort, some screenwriters only ever do rewrites of other people's scripts. It's quite usual for some people to go uncredited too - on TWINE Michael Apted's wife also did some uncredited writing - she was brought in to do pretty much the same job as PWB on Bond 25 - improve the female characterisations.

    Is that true regarding Moonraker?
I know Clement and LeFrenais did work on NSNA, but never knew that? They did script doctor a few movies. They were brought onto NSNA at Conneryz request!

Not that it matters to the casual Bond fan, but Purvis and Wade write their drafts pretty much independently of each other after agreeing on a breakdown of the story structure. Wade: "Well what we sort of say is you take that bit and I'll take that bit." What different scenes? Purvis: "Yeah about five pages each." Wade: "Yes and then I re-write what Neal did."

Basically, whichever way you look at it, it's a two-man collaboration whereby they pull everything together over a period of time. That said, I don't think P & W totally deserve the stick that they get around here because they're working for a client who tells them what they like and don't like, and what should also be included in the story and what shouldn't. Take the climax of SP for example. A set was already built that had to be incorporated somehow into the final shooting script. Sometimes, the writers hands are tied from the get-go.

If B25 turns out to be a hot mess, will members here single out P & W and blame them while giving Scott Z. Burns, Fukunaga, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge a free pass? Or will they look at whose penmanship was last on the pages of script writing duties—that'll be Burns and Waller-Bridge? And doesn't Eon deserve to share some of the blame and criticism of past failures and not just P & W? After all, they were the client who got to say "yes" or "no" and did green-light the bloody things.

As of right now, I'm still unsure what we're going to get with B25 in terms of a good story. Only time will tell.

The solution to most of the problems that plagued recent Bond films is incredibly simple: EON should not do ANYTHING until they have a script that is more or less finished. They shouldn't even announce a release date before they have a script, let alone start building sets!

Fukunaga also gave an interview to the Japanese outlet.

    https://www.cinematoday.jp/news/N0108580

Translation (no spoilers). Misspellings of names is from the translation. Hazards of taking something in English, translating it to Japanese and translating back to English (in effect, the translation of a translation).

In response to a telephone interview, Director Carrie Fukunaga, who takes a megaphone in the 25th installment of the movie " 007 " series , talks about the process of joining the film and the relationship with Japan.

It is the 25th series that this is said to be the last that Daniel Craig plays James Bond. At one time Danny Boyle such as " Train Spotting " was announced as a director, but dropped in August last year on the ground of "difference in opinion on creation". The following month, the appointment of Fukunaga's director of "Beast of No Nations" and the television drama "TRUE DETECTIVE" was announced.

["I was told that I wanted to talk about this movie about two years ago, and I met with Barbara Broccoli (Producer of the '007' series), so I got a candidate again (at Boyle's downfall) It turned out that I started to have a discussion and I got a job, "said the producer a few years ago. "I've been working on the story 120% full-time since last September. It's a very hard job. It's an important piece for this franchise, and especially Daniel Craig, and people's expectations because it's five years since the previous release. Bond films also need to make characters and stories interesting, fresh, and surprising, "he says, saying he has a heavy responsibility for creating a popular series.

The interview took place three days later when shooting started on April 25 (April 25), but in order to "make each scene original and unique", the script is being handed out in an ongoing manner It is said that The question "whether this work is produced as a complete series of Daniel's edition Bond series," I want to think so, but at this point anything emphasizes "what do the stories need in anything" And continued to talk about the story with the scriptwriters.

The villain who stands before Bond is Oscar actor Lami Marek of Bohemian Rhapsody . Fukunaga told the prospects that "Lami is a great actor, and I want to make something memorable", and as to why Lea Sedhu is going to throw Bond Girl in the role of Madeleine Swan " "I just knew a little about her in my first film, and I thought I had something more to say about her."

Fukunaga, who became the first Japanese-American director in the 007 series, lived in Japan in his early 20s. "Yes, I spent six months in Hokkaido. Mainly to do snowboarding. I taught English and French," he said, "I want to go back (to Japan in the promotion of this work) (laughs) Last year we had a new year in Japan, there are many places I have never been to in Japan, but I would like to go there, because there are many great locations and restaurants, and I hope to film someday It was revealed that there was a project hidden in the heart of Japan as a subject. As I said before, it's great that the script is being 'rescued' by these hands as opposed to P&W. For all we know, they could pull off what McQuarrie did on Mission and make a fantastic movie out of it. That in the 4 year gap all P&W could come up is an apparent clonker is unfortunate and concerning but again, couldn't be in better hands right now.

It all feels very fresh and hopefully that feeling is reflected onscreen. I look forward to the film having a very sharp bite.
Very much agree with the sense of fresh energy in the production. The only issue for me is that it's hard not to wish that all of this could have started a few years ago. . .

The franchise needs younger, edgy and (importantly) British blood in the writing team. PWB is exactly what the series needs. [...] Hopefully, PWB becomes Eon's new writer and replaces Purvis and Wade. She's the heir apparent and long may she reign.

Totally agree they need fresh new writing talent. Purvis and Wade have been turning out boring stories and rancid dialogue for too long.

Hopefully B25 is a success. Would be interesting to see what PWB came up with left her own devices.

The most amusing part is how Purvis and Wade have been so vocal about their lack of enthusiasm for penning further Bond scripts. In media interviews after both Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, the duo repeatedly indicated they were bored of writing Bond films, opined that their "well had run dry," and eagerly anticipated the future day when they could move on from the franchise. There was one red carpet interview for Skyfall where their distaste for penning further Bond scripts is expressed: They firmly proclaimed they had no desire to return.

Yet we still have fans on this forum championing them. Why defend a writing duo who have been frank about their lack of enthusiasm for the Bond franchise? It makes no sense. It's akin to staunchly defending a whiny, unappreciative girlfriend who openly belittles you in public and tells everyone she is tired of being with you.

At least PWB seems genuinely excited about writing for Bond. One can't say the same for P&W based on their many previous interviews. They have been quite honest about their boredom.

Whichever person keeps hiring P&W does warrant criticism, yes, without a doubt. There are thousands of talented screenwriters, most of whom would likely give their right arm to write scripts for the Bond franchise. But, rest assured, P&W will undoubtedly be back for Bond 26, 27, 28, 29, etc.

Does anyone have any opinions on Naomie Harris speaking at the GQ Hereos Summit, when she said: "Phoebe Waller-Bridge is going to ramp up the female perspective on Bond 25. The Bond of old, his days are numbered." She's certainly suggesting that the writer will shake up what's come to be expected of the character. I'm not sure how I should express how feel about her "The Bond of old, his days are numbered" remark.

The real conversation we should be having is: when will the title be revealed?

For all we know, Eon may have decided on a title and are withholding it. I suspect that there are a number of different opportunities available:
    • 1. PRESS RELEASE

Eon could reveal something on the 007 website and perhaps even release a photo of Daniel Craig as James Bond to coincide with the announcement. This could theoretically happen at any time. However, it's probably the least impactful way to release the title.
    • 2. TRAILER

After 'Endgame' 'Rise of Skywalker' there is a trend emerging. It would make sense for Bond to follow suit. Plus it's almost certain to be the most buzzworthy way to generate interest in the film. The question then is 'when' will it come online. Typically studios release trailers alongside big films that they also release. MGM/Annapurna don't really have any 'big' upcoming releases upcoming. However, Universal have a very big film in 'Hobbs and Shaw' debuting August 2nd. This seems the most likely.

Therefore, we'd get a trailer around 3 months into shooting. Which is around a month earlier than SF and SP. Will there be enough in the can to make an exciting trailer? Perhaps not. So don't go thinking this is a foregone conclusion.
    1. 3. BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO

On both SF and SP they released BTS videos giving fans the 'first look' of the film around three months into production (prior to the trailer's release). Perhaps this 'video' will be the opportunity for the cast to talk about how 'great' Jamaica is as a location and how 'great' filming has been going so far, etc. The reveal being the title at the end. It would generate buzz, but perhaps not quite as much as a trailer reveal.

Nonetheless, it's Eon style to usually reveal these BTS videos prior to any trailers coming out. Therefore, it appears more likely that we'd see such a video first before a trailer. Though there's a chance we'd see such a video without a title confirmed. Also, looking at how Eon have operated in the past is not decisive when considering what they'll do this time.
    • 4. SET VISIT

We know they'll be filming in Italy, with a car chase rumoured. Eon make a habit of inviting entertainment journalists and film blogs to the sets of al the DC films. Perhaps another press reveal is on the cards? This seems the most unlikely after the middling response to the Jamaica live-stream.

Bond films scripted by one person...

Thanks for your response and list. I think they prove my point--only Bond film was actually scripted by one person (LALD--not one of the best scripts either!). The rest might be credited to one person, but there were always uncredited writers, not to mention interventions from the director (Peter Hunt claimed, quite creditably, that he also worked on the script of OHMSS).
It's more usual for writing in films to be a collaborative effort, some screenwriters only ever do rewrites of other people's scripts.

Exactly. Mainstream Hollywood films are almost never written by one person. There are always polishes, minor revisions, major revisions, and so on from other writers. As Preston Sturges once said, writers are treated like piano movers in Hollywood. The modern Bond films are no different.

Purvis and Wade certainly have their flaws (Brofeld for one, though to P&W's credit, some of their drafts entirely avoided that) but treating them as scapegoats is implausible when one considers that they do not have final say over the script--the producers and director do.
