No Time To Die - Safin's Plot (Spoilers!)

Since we have a thread devoted to what gadgets and cars will be in the film:
https://www.mi6community.com/discussion/19080/the-gadgetry-of-bond-25-what-gadgets-could-we-expect-for-daniels-final-mission#latest

I thought it right that we have a place to talk about the villains and their possible plot......We know it has something to do with a scientist and a 'dangerous new technology'.

There was a report recently that it had something to do with social media. the DC films have all had a timely element, so I suspect that this may link the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

But isn't that criminally dull? Also, aren't we all a bit over Facebook being 'evil' and taking our personal data.

Though Malek does seem like a young tech-savvy troublemaker. But we had something very similar with Silva.

I think he will be more 'terrorist' orientated.

In fact, i'd emphatically rule that out.

Malek has spoken openly about avoiding terrorist roles. due to his Arab heritage he was often cast as the 'terrorist' and since Mr Robot and now Freddie Mercury - and not mentioning a bloody Academy Award! - he's not taking a terrorist role. nor would Eon or Fukunaga push that on him.

this great interview really summaries it:

In what way would a tech savvy evil mastermind need to kidnap a scientist in order to make a threat via social media?
I'm thinking more of a chemical or biological weapon based on the brief synopsis we have.

Indeed, he was a terrorist in 24.

Interesting idea for a thread. I tend to concur with @Benny that a biological or chemical weapon is more likely. If they make Rami related to Blofeld in any way I am going to lose it. Fine if he works for SPECTRE but please no more bloody relations or attempts to be related.

I am trying to think of the SP scene where Bond infiltrates their meeting if anything was said about a chemical or biological weapon? But it's been awhile and I don't recall.

It has to be something big if Bond is lured out of retirement to help out Felix. Also why wouldn't CIA go after it without needing the help of the British Secret Service?

I think it will be on the lines of two Bond video games: Blood Stone and Everything or Nothing. The kidnapped scientist angle reminds me very much to Dr. Malcom Tedworth, in fact
I think the scientist will eventually be killed, just like Tedworth
. The "new technology" bit sounds a lot like the nanobots or something alike. It sounds more to a "the world/a nation is in danger" than the usual Craig plots.

I think Malek would be an old school villian like Dr No, Stormberg or Drax

Fair point that would make sense

Im thinking the same thing. I kind of fear it can go too far in scifi territory, but I'd be happy with a new doomsday device.

Oh and cool thread by the way @Pierce2Daniel.

    Thank you!

So...I recently found this video on Malek talking:

He explains that he will look "different from the way you usually see me".

This would seemingly suggest he has some physical change to himself. We all know that Bond villains are iconic for their scars or other physical features.

We also know that Malek's character is involved in the Norway sequence. It seems that the man in the mask has some scarring following the mask being fired at his face:

    Are they connected?

Looks like the Phantom of the Opera. I agree the villain will be scarred.

Do we know Malek is for sure involved in the Norway stuff? First I'm hearing.

It (allegedly) stems from an interview with Barbara Broccoli, from the press day in Jamaica. I've trouble sourcing it at the moment, though.

EDIT: Got it! From a tweet by @Lizo:

He'll also have a Freddy Krueger style claw.

    Wait a sec...

    Maybe...

He'll scar Madeline to be "like him" or something...

If we follow the trend established in Craig's last few films, there will be a "timely" element to the plot:
    1. Casino Royale: The first Bond film that came out post-9/11 and the villain's scheme involved the financing of terrorism.
    2. Quantum of Solace: Environmental themes and corporate ethics. It also dealt with issues concerning South American resources and the use of dictators to further western agendas.
    3. Skyfall: Wikileaks and cyber-terrorism. Even Silva's look was evocative of Julian Assange.
    4. Spectre: Edward Snowden leaks and the emergence of big data.

So.....what's next? I'm fairly certain that the film won't touch too many hot-bed political subjects. However.....the suggestion of a 'scientist' and 'dangerous new technology', makes me think we'll get a plot concerning climate change.

Many people believe climate change to be a natural disaster and a threat to national security.

Climate change certainly is a hot topic these days, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if the plot or villain's scheme relates to this. There are many ways they can approach this too.

AI in recent years is becoming one of the most trending and discussed topics. I think use of this technology as plot element in the film can be very interesting.

The anti-vaxxer craze could also inspire them to center the plot around biological warfare.

As long it does not turn out like Geostrom

Thanks. I'd find it more exciting than hacking personally. Although there's a risk: diseases are not exactly glamorous.

A NYT OpEd comparing Zuckerberg to a Bond villain:

I could see Malek's character being a Zuckerberg type. Villains with computer-based schemes are notoriously hard to dramatize, though. They did it with Trevelyan and Silva but in each, they beefed up the drama by making it personal.

Potentially a Moonraker eque take over/ destroy the world using biological warfare.

After the last few “personal” missions, sounds great to be returning to a traditional plot.

I'd rather it had something to do with biological weapons. Perhaps, Malek is trying to sell them off to the Americans. I get the feeling that the CIA will be more involved than before.

I think given the state of America's current reputation and Fukunaga's nationality, he'll focus more on the CIA than MI6.

I had a thought this morning that the 'Garden of Death' concept could be reworked into utilizing Augmented Reality technology to drive people to suicide. I can picture a sequence where Bond is forced to endure a living nightmare of past terrors, villains vanquished and women lost, not unlike this sequence from Batman: TAS.

In SPECTRE, during that meeting scene: "... the latest figures show that we presently control 70% of antimalarial vaccines, 34% of HIV, and 40% of all oncological drugs across sub-Saharan Africa, but we face challenges from the WHO in their campaign against our counterfeit pharmaceuticals."

I always thought they'd continue with the Sévérine/human trafficking subplot (also the reason Mr. White turned after all), but with the new Bond25 synopsis I'm going for the above idea.

Basically they're already creating illegal drugs to create a monopoly of some sorts. Perhaps this dangerous new tech is a new drug/bio weapon Malek forced the kidnapped scientist to develop for them. They'll of course be able to easily distribute it through their own channels. Although I'm not sure a drug counts as a form of technology so I could be totally wrong with this.

So.....Baz dropped a bit of a spoiler hinting at the villain's scheme:

So, it appears genetic engineering and biowarfare are on the cards. I've tried to do some research into this, but alas, I have to confess to being a little illiterate when it comes to science.

I hope the film finds an easier way to describe the more 'science-y' parts to audiences. I found these articles on the Guardian which suggest the USA is putting a lot of attention on genetic engineering for the use of agriculture. However, the UN and other bodies are growing concerned that these are actually covert attempts to build bioweapons for the military.

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/04/us-plan-to-genetically-alter-crops-via-insects-feared-to-be-biological-war-plan

    https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/dec/04/us-military-agency-invests-100m-in-genetic-extinction-technologies
Could it be that David Dencik's scientist works for the USA? Therefore, the CIA need to get him back. However, the intel the CIA have suggests that the scientist is being kept in Cuba - somewhere they cannot risk a mission.

Hence when Felix takes advantage of a now-retired Bond living in nearby Jamaica to carry out an 'off the book' operation.

I think you’ve nailed it, @Pierce2Daniel. That’s probably it. Well done.
