Has anyone read this book about Timothy Dalton's films?

    It looks promising.

That does look good, and I'd trust a recommendation from Dan Gale (I follow him on Twitter and he's a big Dalton fan as well as a very smart and knowledgeable guy).

I haven't read it myself, but I listened to Edwards interview on JBR. All the Dalton praise was music to my ears.

For a long time I thought TLD was one of the few films where Bond does not end up with the girl in or near water, but noticed last time that there is a fountain outside the building, as seen when the end credits start. Both of Dalton s films have a fountain featured at the very end. (Winking fish in LTK)

Hot Fuzz popped up on TV this evening. It always amazes me just how good Tim is in this film. What a legend!

Very, very true, this. I love his humour delivery, always with a glimmer in his eyes, like a big bad wolf, or a Welsh ;)

I've always thought there's something wolflike about Dalton (it's a big part of his appeal).

This could have something to do with it:

Dalton could definitely do humor provided it suited him. It was the one-liners/Moore-isms that didn’t work as well.

How did they know I could happily listen to Timothy Dalton saying 'wolves' all day?

I remember that documentary. It was pretty cool and aired months before Dalton resigned from Bond. I remember thinking this was how he was probably going to look in B17, which was due to film later in the year.

Dalton is a great actor and he can do humour. But he wanted to play Fleming's Bond ripped from the pages of the novels and Fleming's Bond didn't do one liners.

With Craig’s reinterpretation of the character, some fans got what Dalton was trying to do years before, and a new appreciation of his take was realized. Dalton’s two films are among my favorites as he plays Fleming's Bond in 2x great films.

Whereas Moore’s Bond would constantly toss one-liners and cheap jokes and raise an eyebrow, Dalton took it more seriously, not afraid to show fear and anger like the books portrayed. But that’s where some average moviegoers didn’t take to him. But I hope I speak for many when I say 'Bond fans' rate him highly.

You do, you do. If not for Connery, he'd be my favourite, no doubt.

I saw it at the time, too. He was already my favourite Bond, but seeing his face light up when a wolf pup toddled towards him was what made me absolutely adore him as a person on top of that.

That is the common narrative, but the truth is not so black and white. TLD in fact contained quite a lot of one liners, relics of the Moore era, and Dalton's delivery of them is admittedly not stellar. But as somebody mentioned above I don't think the problem was that Dalton couldn't do humor, more that the jokes were written for Moore and not suited to him.

Dalton has been quite vocal about what he considers is a weakness in "comedic timing" in various interviews since. I personally think he is a bit hard on himself.

I honestly don't think Dalton dropped the ball on any of the lines. However, the ones which I feel suit Dalton best, are the ones that lean into more of a darker humour.

Pushkin: "I take it that this is not a social call, 007?"
Bond: "Correct, you should have brought lillies."

And of course there's the 'problem elliminator' exchange from LTK.

Pushkin: "I take it that this is not a social call, 007?"
Bond: "Correct, you should have brought lillies."

One of my favourite scenes in the entire series.

It is a great scene! The lines, the performances, the editing, the music... everything.

Stylish attire too there. Anyone know who provided Dalton’s tailoring in TLD?

Love that scene, and the way he rips the dressing gown from Pushkins mistress (took me years to realise that the actress was the warrior girl from Mad Max 2) to distract the bodyguard!
