Quantum of Solace Ultimate/Extended Edition - Where is it?

edited January 2013 in Bond Movies Posts: 1,548
Anyone heard anything about a possible release as I'm sure it would improve the version we've all seen ie a better resolution with White/Haines etc. Sorry for going over old ground but I'm dying to get my hands on it! On a secondary note, I wouldn't mind a special edition of NSNA with commentary etc. I'm sure that was released in the States several years ago but not as yet in Blighty.

I do also hope it will be released this year. And if it will, we will surely get a anouncement in June/July just as we got about the Deluxe Edition of CR 2008!

I doubt it. And, I don't think NSNA has commentary over here. I really don't remember, though.

I really wish that, with the 50th Anniversary Bond set coming out this year, they would release some form of QoS that showed the alternate ending. It would be worth the purchase. If not, at least release the ending somewhere. The thought of it has been teasing me for years.

Either way, I'll be happy enough picking up GE on blu-ray.

This edition could well be announced this Summer, so don't give up hope just yet.

I'm sure it was said once (though of course they are entitled to change their mind!) that QoS would be re-released as a "directors cut" dvd, with longer editing, more complete scenes etc, prior to Bond23 coming out.

I do hope so........every time i watch it i do feel there was a good film just trying to come out, but the bits left on the cutting room floor by Marc Foster and the shaky cam action filming just get too much in the way....

It apparently involves Bond showing up at Haines' place, as he is speaking to Mr. White. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just going off of what I read at one point in time. I do hope it's made open to the public by the end of the year.

But, as bad as I want to see it, it was pretty cool of Forster to go with the ending that he did, so the next filmmaker who stepped in didn't have to continue with the Quantum storyline, and could start fresh.

This is the only footage from that scene. And from the QoS we can see how the end could have been.

Even though the movie is great as it is, it would be great and interesting to see a longer QoS!

If it is, it will likely just be the blu-ray in the pack of 22.

You're LeChiffre. You died in Casino Royale. Stop worrying about QoS.

There hardly is any shaky cam use in QOS. The cutting is, opposite to for example the 2nd Bourne film in a way that it is possible to see very good what happens on screen.
Longer editing would completely change the whole rhythm of the film. I´m absolutely sure that Forster or anyone at Eon is not interested in such a thing. There were announcements of some superduper edition for the future, but I doubt anyone had in mind to re-cut the film for that purpose.

There is a US special edition of NSNA with audio commentary by director Irvin Kershner and some interviews, I think with Kershner and with the writers. Why don´t you just get that and install a region-free player on yout laptop?
The audio commentary is mostly annoying because Kershner basically tells you what happens on screen. There are some interesting bits when he talks about the production problems, but those are more or less also in the interview bits. The interview bits with Kershner and the ones with the writers are interesting.
The sound has been a bit polished, it is still rather bad but audibly better than on the original dvd.

Good for you, that you didn't have any problems "to see very good what happens on screen." Like so many others, who have argued likewise, I couldn't though. And "hardly any shaky cam" in QoS? How do you define "hardly"? Like this?

Casino Royale's wasn't. To maximise profits a separate release is needed and would be the only way to tell the film again.

The Casino Royale one was announced in July for an October release.

Well, in the example you provided there is almost no shaky shot.
It´s cut at lightspeed intervalls, but in 98% of the shots the action is clearly visible.

i so hope Mr White returns in Bond 24! A real shame that scene was not in the movie, and who knows what the footage never used?

I´m glad that wasn´t in the film. It would have been an absolute clicheed soap opera ending.

Of course it's visible. But due to the "lightspeed intervalls" cuts and shaky-cam, I found it hard to follow.

That would not have to have been the final scene though? But doesn't it make you wonder what other footage they have?

No shaky cam???? Maybe my phrase isn't technically correct but shaky cam or "lightspeed cutting" its all the same to me... you only have to read the many other forums besides this one to see that most would agree with what i said..people leaving the cinema with headaches...youre entitled to your belief though.....and the QoS/bourne comparisons in the media will never stop, and that comparison is in the way it was made. So okay then, i hated the lightspeed editing to use your phrase. However i would remind you that one of Bourne's editors once said that they shot the movie then "aimed to put only 40% of a given shot on the screen"......if thats how you want your movies .............and of course longer editing would change the rhythm of the film, thats what disappointed most people with it!
QoS was a movie seemingly done to satisfy the american cop drama viewer.

Personally I prefer grand, sweeping panoramic views, time taken to tell a story, with vibrant colour and patient, intelligent dialogue and action scenes where we can see and enjoy all the skill used to have made it happen, which I trust Mendes will deliver in SF.

Wow, the 1st I've heard of this. Slowing down the crazy pace & expanding the narrative of QOS could be very effective. But then again, LTK would benefit from losing about 5 minutes of superfluous footage, so...
  • I doubt they'll do a re-edit. But they REALLY should have released a proper special edition blu-ray/DVD by now with better extra features.

I, too, felt that the quick-cut camera shots really made it hard to follow at times, especially the opening chase sequence of the PTS, or the foot chase between Bond and Mitchell shortly thereafter, which made it pretty tough to follow who was who in the tunnels. But, when it came to the knife fight between Bond and Slate - which has to be one of my favorite fight sequences in the history of the Bond films - I didn't have too big a problem with that. I don't know, though, maybe it's just me.

I can't remember the source, but I once saw pictures of this very scene, Bond and all in some magazine. At any rate, going by this video Haines bites the dust.

    MI6 Confidential issue 4, maybe?

"Regarding Mr. White, Marc Forster filmed a final scene (after the one in the cinema) where Mr. White meets with Guy Haines to bump him off after his identity was compromised at the Opera. Before he gets to shoot Haines, Bond turns up and kills White, Haines asks who he is and Craig gives the "Bond. James Bond" line (in case anyone was wondering why that wasn't in the film!) Ultimately it was cut as it seemed too tacked on given the narrative already had an emotional resolution, it was very similar to Casino Royale's ending and it meant the next film would force the producers to continue the Quantum storyline into trilogy territory. There are also conflicting (though less convincing) reports that in the scene I've mentioned White actually shoots Bond in a reversal of the Casino Royale ending. Either way I'm sure we'll see White in the future..."

  • I saw a very funny interview with Paul Ritter who played Guy Haines. He refused to reveal the ending of the scene since he believed it might still be used at some point. This was in 2010. He joked "Often some of my best work ends up in the can, se la vie. Though they have said at some point it might get used in a future film or as a flashback, I'm sworn to secrecy".

Paul plays a bumbling father of 2 in a great CH4 comedy Friday night dinner, about a Jewish family who always catch up once a week over dinner. His character Martin is slightly deaf and constantly misses what's going on in conversations. He also has a very funny trademark catchphrase "sh@t on it". I've found a funny clip on Youtube but since it has adult language it's not suitable for work!
