-The Living Daylights
-A View to a Kill
-For Your Eyes Only

    FRWL

FYEO (I find the first three about just as good for different reasons: FRWL for it's early Bond, very classic sound, OHMSS for it's late 60s style, and FYEO for it's 70s/80s style.)

Great idea for a thread @00Beast, as always. Im listing these not by quality but by order of release.

    -You Only Live Twice
-On Her Majesty's Secret Service (The very best IMO)
    -Live and Let Die
    -Moonraker
    -A View To A Kill
-License to Kill (I always really loved Kamen's score)
-Casino Royale (I'll give Arnold some credit here. I think his work on QOS was great too)

OHMSS - Simply the best score ever. No ifs, no buts.
DAF - Runs a pretty close 2nd to the above.
YOLT - Beautiful, haunting and ethereal.
FRWL - Has a bit of everything... and a great version of the Bond Theme to boot.
GF - Just love some of the Bond motifs and the way the title song is used through out this score.
    TB - Bombastic and thrilling.
MR - Barry's best score for a Moore movie (IMO).

Mine are: Escape from Piz Gloria (OHMSS), He's Dangerous (AVTAK), We Share the Same Passions (GE), Inside Man (QOS), Chateau Fight (TB), On the Road (DAF), I'm the Money (CR)... an many, many more!

To be fair, since this is a top 7 and not top 22 list, or the Barry soundtracks would sweep-

    1. GF- Like the movie itself, the "Bond Sound" was created here. The scores that followed would not have that "sound" if it wasn't created here. There has yet to be a better theme than the title song.
    2. DAF- The ethereal sounds Barry creates are just awesome. The Vegas big brass and horns are perfect- if you close your eyes and didn't know the movie was in Vegas, you might guess you were there or listening to a mob movie. And the mobsters still found their way in anyway! The title song Barry's second best without question, like GF I still get chilled to the bone listening to it after all these years. Brilliant stuff.
    3. OHMSS- Probably one of if not the greatest instrumental ever in the movie genre. Provides me with this incredible boost of energy. I found the Nina song ill-fitting and awkward sounding and always skip the track. Otherwise a great soundtrack.
    4. OP- I've been listening to it a lot more lately and appreciating it a lot more. I like the title song much better as an instrumental weaving it's way through the film. The locality themes in India fit well. It mostly all seems to fit really well.
    5. LALD- The best non-Barry score in the series. Martin uses the title song like Barry, which I feel all Bond composers should do because it really helps give the movie and individual soundtrack an identity to help it stand out from the other movies, especially when the same composer scores multiple films.
    6. YOLT- Another haunting theme that you can hum over and over. The Oriental themes are lush and atmospheric. Love it.
    7. TND- Surprise, surprise, but I still feel this is Arnold's best work. I realize it is in part a tribute to the Barry era, but even his more original stuff is pretty good compared to most of his other work. Surrender is a classic theme of any Bond era and should have been the title piece, I rank the song with Barry's best pieces and it takes a lot to impress me like that.

FRWL - the first time Barry did it all by himself and here was the birth of many iconic musical pieces.
OHMSS - Barry at his best, a fulltime inhabitent of my Ipod.
Moonraker - Another of Barry's brilliant moodcompositions.
LALD - Very Bondian and yet so different from the regular composer, really a taste soundtrack with a killer themesong
FYEO - Tom Conti's 80's soundtrack that is another original and great moodpiece that is instantly recognisable as Bondmusic.
YOLT - 007 goes oriental and yet once more hauntingly recognisable.
TLD - the movie is not my favorite but the music is for the last time a qualitypiece in the franchise. After this they have yet to find a composer that can compete at this level of sheer Bondian moodfest.
  • @ Mark- I agree with half of your assessment of FRWL in that it was Barry's first time alone at it. I'd suggest without any ego nor malice that you relisten to what Barry says about this piece in relation to what was to come.

I shall do so but that does not take away that this first attempt is already very very good. And has as a firstling far more power than DA is been able to come up with in all his tries of soundtrackmaking for the 007 franchise. That is mostly my letdown with DA he was allowed to do something special and failed imho.
