He didn't turn down QoS. He just wasn't offered.
    WTF???
Someone I know on FB, @chrisisall, attended the DGA screening for The Foreigner and struck a conversation with Campbell about Casino Royale. Apparently, according to him, the reason Campbell wasn't asked back was Craig. They didn't get on too well on the set of Craig's debut and that Campbell pushed him too hard into the role, forcing him to some of the difficult stunts and acted very tough on them all.

I had always suspected this, but had nothing to back up my suspicions except Campbell's recent comments that he would only be interested in returning to Bond if there was a recast. Rather unfortunate, for all of us.

I recall from some GoldenEye documentary or interview that Campbell is a very demanding and not terribly personable director. He gets results, obviously, but sounds like this side of his directing style didn’t gel with Craig.

Thanks. Sounds like the kind of director I would have been myself. Not loved.

Yes, Campbell is very hard on his crew, Brosnan has said so. I can see Craig not being used to that and not liking it. But it does make him someone good to call on to get them out of a tight spot. If B25 with Craig doesn't happen, he would be the number of choice to swoop in and produce something quickly that will settle the investors nerves. Campbell would do it too since he needs a boost. Foreigner was a great calling card to demonstrate he can still produce magic in constrained circumstances. By no means a masterpiece but very solid action thriller, one of the better movies of 2017.

If i'm not mistaken, there is behind the scenes footage from GoldenEye, that would back up this claim of him being (too?) hard on his cast/crew.

Speaking of Martin Campbell.....it looks as though his next production is about to begin filming. He's making Across the River and Into the Trees. There are other two Bond alums in the production including, the already announced Pierce Brosnan and Giancarlo Giannini.

Also there are two beautiful European actresses in the film; María Valverde and Matilda De Angelis.

Apart from being an exceptional James Bond director, Martin Campbell tends to have quite stunning women in his films too, and the two above are no exception.

    Giannini? That's (fantastic) news!

Yes, for example, Charles Crichton was 78 when he did A Fish Called Wanda. And we all know how this turned out, don't we ?

I agree, he deserves another go. It would'nt bother me if he bought Cavill on board as Bond, as long as we got another Campbell directed Bond film.

If he did a third, as good as the first two, would he be the greatest Bond director of all time?

He's already up there with the best. But given he's never done anything but a debut film it would be more of an incomplete ranking. First films for new actors always have an edge to them and it would be interesting to see what Campbell would do beyond that. We'll likely never know.

I feel that if the action is lacking, it's because that the directors that are hired aren't action directors. This is why people think Martin Campbell is one of the best directors. EON needs to start hiring action directors, not drama, artsy directors. It would make a world of difference.

Hey, Disney and Lucas Film are learning this lesson, and it’s cost them a boat load of money to learn it . A winning formula is a well written script wit a strong, proven director to put it on the screen.

Was Solo really that bad? I've not seen it, but the reviews weren't terrible, and Ron Howard is an excellent director.

As I said on the respective thread, I didn't go because nothing about it really grabbed me from the trailers. I still plan on seeing it on home video. Perhaps they just didn't have enough to draw the viewer in (as in my case), or there could be a fatigue element.

I enjoyed Solo very much; without knowing the troubled backstory, it’s a very good film. With knowledge of the disastrous backstory,, it is a testament to Ron Howard’s incredible skills as a director. To come in and at a sprint, with the clock ticking, re-shoot 80% of what had already been filmed is a Herculean directorial accomplishment.
