No better reference for Bond than Fassbender presently.

I actually see a lot of Fleming, with maybe a little Fassbender. One thing that does underwhelm me is how Bond is drawn; just doesn't give off that feeling the original provides me. Always best to go for a rougher, more jaded looking Hoagy Carmichael in my eyes.

Hoagy Carmichael's likeness would really have sold it just a little bit more. No complains about the artwork in general, though. Always liked Calero's style.

I've been saying all along about how this Bond is modelled on Fassbender and how they have used Orson Welles as the visual inspiration for Le Chiffre!

@Torgeirtrap, I definitely agree. Other artists (like Casalanguida in the new comics) have drawn their own Bond that still feels like Bond, but this one doesn't give off that essence to me just yet. Maybe when I actually get to reading he will.

But yes, the art is very striking, as much for the lines as the coloring. I love comics that are color in a vintage style, and that's perfect for this adaptation of a 50s novel; really brings you back to that time and place. It's color reminds me of a great noir themed Batman comic, Batman: Nine Lives which places all the Gotham characters in a detective murder mystery, as the coloring technique used there is very similar to this.

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 Haven't read Batman: Nine Lives, but I have seen some of the artwork by Michael Lark from it. He - as well as Calero, has this really nice, effective style that I like, and yes, the colouring is indeed very similar (in a good way!).

Speaking of Lark, he too would been a great artist for a Bond book adaption. And Sean Phillips!

@Torgeirtrap, I highly recommend it. In no other book will you find Dick Grayson as a private dick on a case that brings him in contact with all the famous rogues gallery members in specific noir-themed roles, with Batman always in the shadows. I really enjoyed it.

I'll put it on my list! Not much of a superhero comic reader, but the noir elements might make it a more enjoyable reading experience. :-)

@Torgeirtrap, it's really got none of those over the top superhero elements in it. Batman and the lore of his world already fit well within noir barriers, so the story really doubles down on that, grounds the characters and the story with a very true homage to the genre it's fed by. It really is like watching a Bogie mystery that just so happens to have Batman in it, and the story cleverly plays with the Batman myth and its impact on Gotham while also writing a great Dick Grayson. Part of the fun is seeing how famous DC characters are reimagined for the book, and what twists the story must take on them to fit the more realistic and grounded approach.

I would recommend it to every Batman fan, but certainly every noir fan as well.

Noted! Worth buying only for Lark's artwork too, I guess! :)

Absolutely. Lark brings the vintage style to brilliant life. Wait till you see his version of the batmobile!

M looks a little like Dennis Price. Fawcett looks a little like Peter Capaldi. Clements looks a little like a cross between Patrick McGoorhan and Richard Conte. S looks a little like Orson Welles. As for Bond... he doesn't really look like anyone.

I get a bit of a Robert Mitchum vibe from Bond.

Clements feels very McGoohan-ish to me, is that what you mean? ;)

Does anybody else see a lot of Eddie Izzard in the Soviet Section head?

You are right about that! Calero might had some fun with these.

    Yes, sir! :D

It definitely is based on a still from Danger Man.

@ClarkDevlin, it would be amusing to spot Drake at the same card table as Bond in France, as a nice little wink to a character that certainly shares some of the original's finer qualities I swear I've seen that picture of McGoohan somewhere before, but I can't find it right now.

There's three things I can already tell about Calero: he is clearly very pop culture savvy, has good taste and seems to enjoy using reference work for his art. All the more curious why he didn't use Hoagy Carmichael for Bond! That being said, now when I read through CR I'm going to be on constant watch for any familiar faces. ;)

M looks a bit like Fleming. S reminds me of Gabriele Ferzetti, and Clements of a younger Ferzetti.
