Was critical and casual movie going reception to Waltz really that bad? Or does it just seem like it because seemingly everyone around here hates his performance?

    This time it's impersonal.

I expect the general audience liked Waltz and the film just fine.

I don’t hate his performance at all. I just think some of the writing for his character is weak, such as the past connection with Bond. Waltz himself, while not outstanding, did okay. He had some good moments, though the script gave him very little to work with.

I’ll take it with a pinch of salt, but if true... if true... why is there a “personal connection”, again? Do films today have to force a personal connection between the hero and the villain to make it interesting? It’s beyond me, to be honest.

Of course, this said reddit user could very well be reading this thread and borrowing ideas from here as much as possible to gain attention. You never know.

What is with all the hysteria that comes around the word "personal"? Every great story needs personal connections. You don't have a great story without coincidences.

What Bond fans are tired of are personal stories, something that puts Bond's personal life front-in-center of the story, rather than the story itself.

Personally I like the ideas presented, if I wanted to see a run-of-the-mill Bond film I'd just watch Connery or Moore.

Helen Mirren would obviously be great. And she still has sex appeal, not easy at 72!

Was just reiterating how bad I've wanted a female villain - that part is sound, but if true, I'm already worried about Bond being a mentor for some young female agent, plus I'm not caring for the "personal connection" Bond is supposed to have to the villain. Hopefully these personal angles cease to be come the next era.

I don't mind the personal connections but I prefer they arise within the same film (006, Vesper). Die Hard was a huge influence on all action cinema--and I think that's why so many action films have a personal angle--but Die Hard only got personal when the villain figured out he had control of McClane's wife.

How about Angelina Jolie as the villain?

    Lily James for the spy

I'm not a fan of Jolie unfortunately. If you must go American, then I'd prefer Robin Wright, who's already worked with Craig. Otherwise get Blanchett.

Regarding the mentee: I wonder if (assuming this is true) the idea is to launch an MI6 female agent here for a new series which can be distributed via Epix streaming. The so called 'universe' angle. The character would of course have instant credibility, having been trained by the great 'Craig Bond' in the twilight of his career.

    This just in from Reddit:
(...) My sources at WME tell me the story of Bond 25 opens with Spectre having disbanded and split into several competing factions after Blofeld's arrest. The PTS involves James Bond causing the death of civilians while recklessly trying to stop a terrorist attack by a former Spectre operative named Von Richter. I'm told the producers intend to set the sequence in Berlin, but logistics and permits have to be worked out so the plan might change. Anyway, Bond succeeds at arresting Von Richter but the British government bigshots decide 007 has become too dangerous an agent ("he has a pathological rejection of authority," one character says of Bond), so they place both Bond and Von Richter under an experimental cryogenic process that will last for decades, and during which their minds will be reprogrammed in order to turn them into model citizens, while at the same time conveniently extracting enemy intel from the bad guy. Anyway, thirty years later, Von Richter is unfrozen before the mental reprogramming has taken effect, and he escapes from the cryogenic facility killing dozens of guards in the process. The MI6, now part of a society which has shunned violence and is unprepared to deal with the new threat, decides to unfreeze James Bond as well, since his still-reckless ways are just what it takes to stop the bad guy. Bond, at first reluctant to accept the assignment, finally agrees to do so for the sake of mankind and tries to stop Von Richter in a worldwide manhunt, while investigating the reasons that led to his escape, and dealing with an underground resistance that plans to overthrow the British government. During the mission, he is assisted by fellow MI6 agent Gala Brand, who of course falls for him. The script involves an elaborate action sequence in a museum and its climactic scenes are set in the cryogenic facility itself. Danny Boyle wasn't kidding: for a Bond film, it's... different, but pretty cool!

I'll post the source link in a minute. I, uh, seem to have misplaced it.

I’d prefer foreign actors that I don’t know and let Bond and the story/characters be the stars. That said, if it has to be an A lister, Tilda Swinton is the perfect obvious choice. Blanchett great too.

It's obviously a joke, but still, surely there are worse ideas? I'm also with @Birdleson on being done with all the personal BS.

In any case, we won’t get serious news for a long while probably. September or October perhaps.

There's probably some truth to this given Boyle pegged the me too movement with bond 25.

I think Frances McDormand is likely for the female villain part. Fresh off a 2nd Oscar, Daniel Craig hosted a screening for the movie she won for so he must be a fan, her schedule is free and finally she plays tough-as-nails effortlessly. In fact she would totally fit a rebooted Rosa Klebb.

I'd be more than happy with this. Her or Tilda Swinton.

Interesting call. You may be onto something.

That would be interesting. She is a good actress. We certainly are due for more female villains again anyway.

I can live with there being personal connection because it's another Craig film and they've all been like that. I'd rather one last one in the same vein as the others and then a proper change in direction with the next guy than them suddenly shifting gears for his last film. It'd be a bit weird to have a fun old fashioned stand alone with Craig now imo, kind of like if they suddenly went dark and gritty for AVTAK.

I like the idea of a female villain and Bond as a mentor, as long as it's still his film. Wish Blofeld was in it though. First time in 50 years they had the chance to do YOLT and it's gone. Still though, Danny Boyle. Can't complain.

If you're all on about what @mattjoes quoted, they're taking the piss. That's the plot of Demolition Man (great film by the way).

I didn’t know the film but thanks. I figured it was false but it was an amusing plot for Bond. Like I said - in theory it could be sort of interesting. Probably not the best for Bond though.

Assuming this is true for a second, what could the villain's connection to Bond be? Something to do with Blofeld or another villain? Someone who used to work for MI6? Love interest turned bad? I just hope it's nothing to do with his childhood again.

Demolition Man was ahead of its time. I can see that silly swearing penalty thing they had in that film becoming law at some point at the rate we're going. We have to be so careful these days so as not to offend someone with SJWs on the rampage.

An old flame would be the best route for personal connection since Bond has so many love interests; it would hardly make it more personal, really. And I agree; let’s drop the whole childhood thing.

"Personal Connection"; I'm already feeling ill and disappointed.

I just realized, if I had gone to a casino, and bet the equivalent of Connery's entire DAF salary (inflation adjusted for 2018), that the phrase "PERSONAL CONNECTION" would somehow be used to describe B25 I'd be quite wealthy today.
