It might also have to do with how much you can identify yourself with a certain actor. If you watch a film just once or twice that won't matter much. But for being in the mood to watch a film regularly you need to have a certain relation to the actor who personifies Bond. I also find Craig's Bond less likeable than the other Bond incarnations. Maybe that is why I prefer watching the older Bond films.
That's true. In my case, having thought a little more about it since my last post, I think the continuity also gets in the way of enjoying these newer films. With the older ones, you just put them in the player and are whisked away for 2+ hrs of unconnected enjoyment. With the new ones, one prefers to see them in sequence. To some extent that may be why I prefer viewing SF the most (it is still, to my mind at least, unconnected despite the retro garbage).
I have a friend who hates Vesper as a character. Even If we've basically canonized her already in the Church of Bond.
What are his/her reasons for this uncharacteristic dislike?

I wonder who that could be. Maybe you should put that on the "Guess the character" thread.

Don't tell me, you hate the jailer in TLD because he was mean to Kara?

That big Russian fella in the jail is a hoot. It's an amusing scene, right down to Shah's reactions in the cell.

I have a friend who dismisses CR because "Bond should not fall in love".

    Well, here's her reasons...

*Vesper set up as a non-damsel-in-distress but later revealed to be one
*Commits suicide without facing the consequences
*She simply manipulates Bond for the whole time
*Friend does not get the all "I hate you but after almost dying I now love you" bit

Those are all very valid reasons! I had a feeling it was a 'she' because quite a few men would likely look past all of that after seeing Green in that dress at the casino. I know I certainly did. ;)

This is fair. I remember there used to be a bit of debate at how the Bond/Vesper love story was undercooked and needed a few more scenes to really sell it.

And then we got SP and Madeline and the relationship in CR now looks like Romeo and Juliet.

He's certainly up there with the worst of the lot. The accent in particular is terrible. Unintentionally hilarious in some ways when perhaps they were instead going for intimidating.

As mentioned on here before, the guy used to be in a soap opera based in Liverpool called Brookside, hence his accent is basically as Scouse as 'The Beatles' !!

You might find him on You Tube if you look up Brookside.

His accent is nearly the same in TLD,talk about bad casting.

To be fair though it's probably Dalton's best fight scene.

I vaguely remember that series now that you mention it. That explains a lot. At least Julie T. Wallace made an effort. Dulice Liecier was pretty bad with the American twang in the same film (she used to be on Eastenders I think).

This is what i find incredible Wiz,why do they cast someone from a British soap,in a British film,a BOND film, that people will recognize and laugh at.

How do these casting directors get away with it..isnt the final cut checked ?

Julie T Wallace gets away with it because she probably practiced her arse off,and she did more credible British TV at the time than soaps.

That film...i tell you,for a Bond debut,an important one after Sir Roger finished, did some shit casting.

I sometimes think its only John Barry's score that saves it.,along with Jonathan Rhys Davies/Thomas Wheatley.

NB: Sorry about the 2 posts instead of one everybody,i'm watching TV at the same time and cocked up.

This site really needs a delete feature !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Craig should've left after SF. Also have a standalone film in 2010 that shows Bond in his prime taking down Quantum

I agree. It's a matter of years in the role, and 6 years is almost as long as Brosnan. Tastes change, and EON are hampered currently by Craig's limitations as an actor. He can't play the light hearted Bond, and that's increasing what's required from him. Look at how Mission Impossible and Kingsman have embraced the comic tone, and the success they have with it. Look at the marvel movies, very light hearted and breezy. Why is it that Bond is pretending like it's still 2006 and the gritty reboot is still vogue. Things have changed and we need someone in the role who can adapt to the new norm. Craig is still Bond only as a matter of convenience because he and Babs work well together (similar to Moore and Cubby back in the day).

I liked the accents in GE personally. A bit exaggerated but quite charismatic. Ouromov was particularly good, as was Natalya and Mishkin.

Agreed, and Onatopp...GE and TLD are chalk and cheese when it comes to re-watchabilty and fun.

    GE #6
    TLD #24

    Enough said.

Come on,Ouromov is excellent..and its not trying to be as serious..if you want to be a serious Bond film then get it right, ala FRWL.

Russian accents done in English I can give a pass to. The gangster accents in GF are what get me.

"Hey, what are you tryin' to pull, Goldfinga?" It's more like Johnny Dangerously than James Bond. It takes me out of it, but it seems like GF gets a pass when comes to things like this.

What I like about the Renard and Elektra relationship is that even if the twist of her being bad is pretty obvious, they still manage to play with expectations because you're left thinking stockholm syndrome. But instead the brutal terrorist who can't feel pain turns out to be the manipulated one and weirdly sympathetic, while Elektra is the cold mastermind behind everything. I think they're two of the best villains and the relationship between them is one of the best things about TWINE. The scene where she's teasing him in bed is so cruel.

This might be controversial: in a lot of ways I think TWINE proves wrong a lot of the common criticisms of the Brosnan era. Too formula driven? Christmas feels shoehorned in but apart from that it's full of original ideas and shakes things up in a lot of ways. Too reliant on gadgets? There are gadgets in the film but Bond also uses his wits and feels like a real detective. Too generic and not in the spirit of the original books? I can't be bothered to type it all out again but I made a pretty long post about how it feels very Fleming here
