Bond Attire

I have just purchased a pair of Tan Leather Skechers from Sportsdirect, similar to the ones worn by DC IN QOS, would Bond wear them? I will upload an image soon

Check out this website, which is VERY THOROUGH on Bond's attire throughout the years. There is a section on Daniel Craig there...

    <url>http://thesuitsofjamesbond.com/</url>;

By the way, this is a good idea for a new topic! We've discussed Bond's clothing in some other threads recently. But this is first to focus on it.

I'll open up a question: Which Bond looked best in the classic Bond Black/white/bow-tie dinner suit?

Connery looked top notch in the classic black suit/bowtie (don't get me started on the white dinner jacket (*) ). Lazenby, Moore and Dalton looked better with a straight tie. Brosnan looked good in anything. Craig looked pretty good, too. Although I prefer his grey suit when he steps off the plane in CR.
  • Moore believed that a white dinner-jacket was more appropriate in certain climates. Not sure that Jeeves would have agreed with him on that, but still. Glad this thread is strictly referring to the attire as 'dinner suit' and 'dinner jacket'. I remember having a meal with an elderly aristocrat (I was interviewing her for some research I was conducting) and being pulled up on that point. She was a very famous name in the 1930s and 40s, and had more than an aura of Dame Maggie Smith's Downton Abbey character about her. I naively mentioned the word 'tuxedo' only to be stopped in my tracks by her basilisk stare.

"That is an American term!" she cautioned me, with more than a little disapproval. "They are dinner jackets, because gentlemen wear them for dinner!"

That was me told. I've always referred to the dinner suit and jacket ever since. Coincidentally this lady had met Ian Fleming on a few occasions, so I presume he followed her strict terminology on all matters evening dress.

Strange, isn't it? Much the same with football; for some reason they insist on calling it by some odd term. When it's so simple. It's a game where a ball is played with the foot.

It's not that difficult, is it?

Interesting encounter @Jones_The_Bond! In fear of disapproving aristocrats, I'll be careful of referring to a dinner jacket as tuxedo from now on!

For me, SC in the TB dinnerjacket in the Bahamas is as good as it gets. It's no secret that scene, from the boat arriving at the Casino to Domino departing the dance is also my favourite sequence in the whole series.

With Barry's score playing so poetically as Bond arrives on the boat and walks into the casino.

Connery's dinner suit in Dr.No was just perfect and Craig's suits, especially in QoS (when he's not dirtying them up) are stunning as they're fitted and give compliment to his physique.

I prefer Craig in what we've seen him in for SKYFALL.

I do too. A lot of consistency thus far with him wearing a nice suit, which is how I prefer my Bond to be looking; suited up!
However, once we get to Turkey, things may change. I still want him suited up whilst in Turkey but I dont mind something a bit more relaxed, something casual with an air of smart formality about it.

Even if he isn't suited in Turkey, we'll still get over half the film on him looking classy! Plus, I understand him adjusting his clothing with his environments. Every Bond has done that. We had Connery in a towel for 15 minutes in Thunderball!

    LMAO!!!

I wonder what the weather conditions are like in Turkey. Connery wore a suit through out FRWL.

I also love Bond in Jamaica in Dr No, where, wearing a suit while striding through the airport, his only concession to the heat is to gently fan himself with his hat. Loosening his tie obviously being unthinkable to him.

Some Bond suits I really love that I've seen in the films have been Sean's suit in the the last half of GF, as well as his tux in the PTS. Pure style, that man.

As for who fills out the tux the best, there can only be Sean. The man can fill out a suit, and always looks devilishly dapper while doing it.

    DN_075.jpg
I love Bond in the TB PTS as well, as it looks to be a throwback to his wonderful suit in GF.
    Thbll_005.jpg
In addition, TB has some of my favorite attire Bond has worn while being casual.
    Thbll_157.jpg
    Thbll_327.jpg
    Thbll_392.jpg
The man even pulls off pink!

Dan has some of my favorite casual attire I've seen in the series:
    CR_0330.jpg
    CR_0400.jpg
    CR_0569.jpg
    CR_0635.jpg
    CR_1464.jpg
    QoS_0299.jpg
    QoS_1727.jpg
    QoS_2005.jpg
And he pulls off his suits extremely well to boot:
    QoS_0814.jpg
    QoS_1201.jpg
    QoS_1107.jpg
I think he knows it too:
    CR_0742.jpg

So, as far as style in their dapper, Sean and Dan are tops. ;)

Now here is a thread very dear to my heart. My father used to be a tailor (and a fine one by the way) so I'm proud to say I know a thing or two about the metier. Not a Bond-fan himself but being married to and father of die-hard Bond-fans it's needless to say he had to watch the films multiple times and he always has some comment on the suits (or Honour Blackman's knees for some reason).
Connery wore wonderful suits, mostly in the first 3 films. His outfits in Goldfinger are my favourite (and the best thing of the film in my opinion).
In contrast most of Lazenby's closet seems strange to say the least.
Moore's suits must have been very fashionably once but in contrast to Connery's they look very much dated, the wide leg, shirts, etc
Shamefully someone did a very nasty job with Dalton's suits, with notable exception of some outfits in TLD like that dinner jacket that turns up the collar (very original).
Brosnan is always very elegantly dressed! Well tailored suits and lovely ties I must add. However I have to say that I prefer his suits in Goldeneye to all others.
Craig is usually very well dressed. Some may criticize Tom Ford's suits but the thing is they are very elegant yet fashionable. However my favourite is not a Ford creation but the 3-piece suit he wears at the end of CR that suited him like a glove.

Yes! It added to the iconography of that last shot. I also love it because it feels like he's graduated to another level by the end of the film and the suit states that perfectly.

I actually made a list of my top 4 favourite dinner jackets in Bond films.

    1. DN - casino opening - Sean Connery
    2. CR - at the casino - Daniel Craig
    3. TB - casino and dancing with Domino - Sean Connery
    4. QOS - infiltrating the opera - Daniel Craig

Sean Connery was a man made to wear suits. DN, FRWL, GF, TB, YOLT. His suits just suit him perfectly. Perfectly tailored, of course. And they haven't dated at all. Just such a classic cut, the Conduit Cut.

Daniel Craig's suits so far in Skyfall are remarkable as well; obviously a throwback to how Sean Connery dressed. You can even see what films they've drawn inspiration from. FRWL in particular. Well done, Tom Ford.

i gotta say, no one fills the tuxedo the way Connery did...
    http://screenmusings.org/DrNo/pages/DN_050.htm

Craig would be second, with his dinner jacket in CR
    http://screenmusings.org/CasinoRoyale/pages/CR_0744.htm

I also thought Pierce filled it pretty nice in TWINE
    http://screenmusings.org/TheWorldIsNotEnough/pages/TWinE_0561.htm

Moore's dinner jacket in TSWLM also gets my seal of approval

I enjoyed Sandy's analysis of the Bond suits over the years. In fairness to Lazenby's tailor (Dimi Major), while the style was certainly more flamboyant than Connery's, the cut and fit were superb for a man of Lazenby's physique. I feel that the Tom Ford suits are a little too close fitted and tend to over-emphasise Craig's muscularity.

But from what I've seen of the photos from the Skyfall set there is one item of Craig's clothing which has me terribly disappointed. For the first time in Bond history 007 is wearing a shirt with a button-down collar. This is not an elegant look. The button-down collar is designed for people who either can't stand the formality of a stiff collar or simply don't know how to iron one properly.
  • I forget who said it on this forum, but someone did make the good point that Pierce in a tux looks like an award show presenter.

    It's a tab collar.

Has anyone ever seen Bond in a pair of jeans???
  • edited March 2012 Posts: 4,813
They said he wore them in LTK briefly-- but I swear I have no idea when

*edit- Daniel Craig wore them for sure. Not typical 'blue jeans' though, but nice expensive ones, lol

In the books, from what I remember, Bond wears jeans. At least in Dr. No for sure!
