"Can you play any other tune?": Who should perform the next Bond theme...?

Yes, it's a question that, during the existence of the old forums, proved a perennial favourite as soon as production of 'the-next-Bond-film' was announced. So, methinks, why not give it a resurrection on the new forums? It's a good old poser, after all.

In truth, however, after having heard a particular song by a particular artist on the radio today, it got me thinking on that artist's suitability to do the next 007 flick's tune. So, yes, here's this thread and its first suggestion, folks...

In short, peeps, how about Arcade Fire? The tune I heard of theirs on the old wireless today was this 'un...

Yes, hardly an unsual or radical effort by them (it's arguably their most recognisable, I guess), but on its hearing today, it struck me there's something cool, laid-back almost eerie and mildly threatening about it - in short, it struck me it sounded a bit Bondian.

The other point about Arcade Fire is that, following their big and very public success at the Grammys recently, they're clearly a band that has a rising commercial profile, something that Eon would surely look favourably on, as they so often have in the past when it comes to music artists they've used .

So, there you go, chaps, could you, like me, imagine something like this playing over the opening titles of the next Bond flick...?

I wouldn't mind Arcade Fire doing a Bond theme...

my current list of artists/bands that I would like to see do the Bond 23 - or another future Bond theme are as follows..

Shirley Bassey - the old gal has still got plenty of life left in those pipes, and i think it would be a shame, for the 50th Anniversary if they don't offer it to her..

Amy Lee - I always thought she had a beautiful and haunting voice - when she actually sings.. but when I heard the song "Good Enough", I felt that she has the right tone to execute a very classy Bond theme, almost in a Carly Simon type of way.. here is the song I am talking about..

Liam Gallagher - After I heard the Oasis song "The Masterplan", I really feel like he could make a great Bond theme - hell, the song almost sounds Bond like on it's own..

Muse - seems to be every casual fan's "most logical choice", as they are extremely popular now.. But I have been saying their name since before they really struck it big (at least here in the states).. and I think this song demonstrates that they have Bond potential - even if sounds like they jacked part of it from Temple Of Doom ;)

    ---------------

now, for my way out in left field choices - artists/bands I would like to see, but would probably never stand the chance of doing a Bond theme..

Slash - either him with another artist, or even solo - it would be cool to see him shred out a Bond Instrumental - it would be an interesting change of pace - and not since OHMSS was just an instrumental used for the title theme..

Ozzy Osbourne - yes yes, i know - never a chance in hell... but i love his vocals from the song Dreamer, and I can only imagine what they would sound like with Arnold's full Bond orchestra behind them...... but, i can just file this under Pipe Dream :(

David Bowie - i just really love David Bowie, and I would really like to see what he could do with a Bond theme.... but, the band Pulp had a rejected theme for Tomorrow Never Dies - which almost sounds Bowie like - so I guess I'll just have to live with that lol..

Not too convinced by all of the above.
Paul Potts should sing a song written by David Arnold and Don Black.

Sorry @haserot. I really can't stand her voice and copied look. The whole band to me is nothing more than Nightwish wannabes. I do live the original Nightwish and really would love for the now departed Tarja Turunen to perform the main theme. Turunen is a trained Opera singer that puts Lee's voice to shame

    Nightwish (with Tarja Turunen)
    Wishmaster

    Gethsemane

    Sleeping Sun
    B-)

Thumbs up for David Bowie, as well. I'd love bands like U2, , Iron Maiden to have the theme, but all of this is very unlikely, and we'll surely end up with some pop act of the moment.

My top two picks are Arctic Monkeys and Muse.

That's actually Noel Gallagher on this one. I'm sure either brother would do it. Though I don't think the brothers Gallagher are in the publice consciousness enough anymore (maybe in the UK still IDK), to be contenders for a Bond theme. The producers will likely go for someone who is hot right now, like they had hoped for with Amy Winehouse for QOS.

Personally Shirley Bassey would be my favorite choice.

Of the above choices I really think that Muse and Evanescence would make a good theme exactly for the reasons @hasrot mentioned. Nightwish is a bit too "harsh" for Bond (whereas Evanescence is more familiar in the pop scene). Just my opinion, of course.

    Here's my choice:

That's exactly why I dislike the idea, mind you, Nightwish with Anette Olzen is just as pop (trash) as Evanescence, but with better music imo ;)

    @JamesStock

    I had forgotten about Seal..

wasn't he at one point tied to Casino Royale? - not for the title theme, but to play a character? because isn't that where the name Solange originated from? - it was to be his character, but then they rewrote the role, and changed it to a woman?

i could be mistaken - but I am for certain he was tied to Casino Royale (even if it was only a brief rumor)

Pretty sure you're right. I wouldn't mind Seal, good voice.

    Adele:

I hadn't heard of her until I saw ads for her album 21. I think she's one of those few arists who could legitimately make a song in the vein of Shirley Bassey without clearly sounding like they are trying to sound like Bassey.

    Shirley Bassey!
  • Haserot where did you hear that tosh about Seal originally being Solange...thats a curious tale.

Anyway, my choice would be the best british band around at present...Kasabian.

I was waiting for someone to mention Michael Buble. A great choice but I can't ever see EON picking him.

I suggest Warpaint for Bond 23:

    Undertow:
    Krimson:

I would also like to throw Portishead (or a Beth Gibbons solo effort) and Neil Hannon from the The Divine Comedy into the ring. I also believe that The Duke Spirit could deliver a really good Bond Theme song.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I do remember those rumors...hmmm. In addition, I think it was said somewhere that he had a song in mind for Bond at the time (but, of course nothing came of it).

    @Luds: Haha, point taken.

Seal a really good shout but for the 50th (and as a tribute to John Barry) Arnold has got to get Don Black and David Mccalmont back on board and deliver up another Surrender and give it to Shirley.

Ugh...I wouldn't mind so much if Shirley Bassey sang the end credits or a song played in the middle of the film (I would prefer the latter). But for the theme song? Give it to someone who hasn't had a shot.

That would be unbelievable and would be great to see it happen. I'm all for it. Maybe Barry's passing will fire up Arnold to give us a great score as well.

I like Adele now after listening to her. Great voice and she would be well suited for a Bond theme.

The more I think of it, Shirley Bassey probably wouldn't be appropriate at this point. It wouldn't be the same without having that John Barry pairing. Let her 4 amazing contributions to the series shine.

    Or even 3. :)

I wouldn't mind someone who's only had one go to come back, such as Tom Jones.

Oh right! It is 3! Call the Bond police...Haha. Maybe subconsciously I'm hoping for a fourth. No, but seriously the GF, DAF, and MR songs are easily 3 of the best of the series.

  • Got to be Prince - anyway here's the dude playing a guitar solo - check out the band with him. If you don't like him don't worry it's a great musical performance by all involved.

    Enjoy.

    Dame Shirley - who else?!
  • Lets stay clear of Bassey...she's had her day.

Its the 50th anniversary and why not, as a tribute to that and to the late John Barry, have David Arnold use the classic 007 instrumental over the opening credits.

I think it has to be Lady Gaga:
    image

.... for what she would would bring visually, with a video. I say her, more for the visual sizzle, than for anything else. Some of her songs have great production value musically, taker "Poker Face" for example.

I'm not a Gaga freak, bty, I have not even been to one of her concerts, not have I purchased any of her albums. But, in this business of making money for the Bond franchise, I think Gaga would be a smart move.
