Can't believe not one person has listed French Connection 2

    Prefer it to the original

One of his greatest performances. His 'cold turkey' scene is riveting and harrowing.

You've saved me some time there as I thought I was going to have to write that.

A cracking tour de force by Gene throughout

    The Royal Tenenbaums

Ps Wish the great Mr Hackman could have appeared in a Bond film. Would have made a great villain.

    French Connection
    French Connection II
    Hoosiers

Also liked his role in Downhill Racer with Robert Redford; Royal Tenenbaums; Behind Enemy Lines; The Package. Has there been a similar list for Paul Newman? I'll have to check for that.

He is also really good in The Firm, which isn't a classic film.

Lets not forget one of his early roles.' Bonnie and Clyde'! He wasn't the lead, but I think he stole the limelight from Warren Beatty!
On a more quirky note, he was great in the action thriller 'Prime Cut', squaring off as the villain against the late great Lee Marvin!

I have been chatting to some budding script writers via Facebook and we were discussing "perfect scenes" where acting, script, photography and direction come together to produce something special and hard to imagine being better. Also, the scene stands on it's own merits, telling a mini story within the bigger picture. I must have watched this scene a hundred times.... "thanks for the beer"....

He is equal to Clint Eastwood in that scene.

Thanks for the reminder...check out the little giggle at the end of this ...pure class..

  • 1. NARROW MARGIN (1990) - his absolute best performance!! Also my favorite film of his!!! A criminally underrated gem of a thriller!!! His scene opposite James B. Sikking on the train as they discuss Anne Archer should be shown in every acting class!
    2. CRIMSON TIDE (1995) - Denzel surprisingly holds his own against Gene in this film. Still, Gene steals the picture!!!
    3. ENEMY OF THE STATE (1998) - once he shows up things get real!!!

Love me some Gene!! What an actor!!

    Age 90! Hard to believe.
    A great actor, yes.

    For today, I'll go with:

The French Connection (1 and 2)
The Replacements (I just enjoy that film a lot; I know it's lightweight)

Here's the trailer for The Replacements ;)

I love Superman 9best super hero movie ever), but think that's really a supporting role, but he's still the best Lex Luther EVER!!! See Donner's cut of Superman 2 as well, so much better than the Lester version and far more Hackman in it as well.
