CASINO ROYALE is the best action film since DIE HARD

thanks for everyone's participation in this thread.

Re: "best action film": what I meant by this is that these two films are considered to be in the same genre. I'm not necessarily implying a comparison of how well done the "action" was executed in either of these two films (but obviously action plays a huge role).

I chose Die Hard because, as industry insiders will know, since it was made, many say it's the perfect action film made in the modern era. They say this because it isn't just slap dash action and violence. But the entire film is about one man trying to save...

... his marriage. And that all the choices he makes (action) is to save Holly (and, by extension, their life together).

I happen to agree with this point of view. If this was just another mindless action film, it'd be more on par with a Steven Seagal film.

No, there was a point to everything McClane did, and it directly resulted to his wife and their future together. Therefore, thematically, it was a strong script/film.

When I look at CASINO ROYALE, I have the same feelings: every choice Bond makes there's a point behind it. M doubts his readiness so he must prove himself in every choice he makes. And when Vesper becomes involved, suddenly Bond becomes very conflicted. His "armour" is being stripped from him. It's a film, like DIE HARD , that stretches itself thematically, therefore the "action" (and, yes, that includes rather tensely executed scenes at the card table) have a point and it isn't mindless action set pieces for the sake of having action set pieces.

For this, to me, CR stands head and tails above most action films since DH (I think MI3 comes close to this lofty perch as well).

Once again, I loved reading this community's thoughts on two, incredible and well loved films. Thank you again for participating.

I mean, you can't argue with a candid, behind the scenes photo of Cruise doing the stunts. Speaks for itself.

I actually know Mic Rodgers, legendary stunt man and now second unit director and stunt coordinator. Although he didn't work on MI3, he did tell me about the Dubai sequence: stunt guys were working on it for weeks in preparation for Cruise.

Cruise did the stunt. He was wired to the hilt (that were "erased" in post), but, yes, that was him running around on the outside of a building in Dubai.

So there would be an uncut version in which we can clearly see Tommy's face and the camera follows him bouncing around(focus on Tommy's face). Please produce the video. No stills. No CGI handi-work. Uncut video is proof. Until you do, you're selling smoke and mirrors.

Many of the great stunts in CF were Daniel Craig and stunt doubles, but didn't use a green screen like Lil Tommy.

Sorry, I didn't finish my thought earlier. I meant the original Total Recall of course, from 1990, one of the great lines from which you've quoted above. My favourite is Arnie's Austrian delivery of the following:

"Come on, baby. You know you're the girl of my dreams."

I loved Casino Royale and id say its even better than Die Hard. The action in die hard might be more heart pumping and has better edge of your seat moments but Casino is better esthetically.

I love the Tuaxedo Craig wore, it fitted him very nicely the more i see it the more i like it. Vesper's dresses were breath taking especially the purple one.
The hotel where the casino was set, looked very high class with a lot of luxury and all the locations were perfectly nice looking.

Don't get me wrong guys i love pure action flicks as well but I also love great style and glamourous films and Casino Royale was a very glamourous film.
McTiernan( The die hard director) can do glamourous films as well he did a great job with The Thomas Crown Affair but we are comparing Casino Royale with Die hard and I definitely choose Casino Royale.

    From the above article;

In 2006’s Mission: Impossible 3, Cruise took his wire work from Minority Report to the next level by performing some intense base-jumping stunts that looked visually incredible…and terrifying. Director JJ Abrams wouldn’t let Cruise jump off of an actual skyscraper in Shanghai, so they recreated it in a studio to minimize as much of the potential splatter in case anything went wrong. Cruise ended up throwing himself recklessly off big drops on the set and risked his well-being while just wearing a safety harness.

This will drive Creasy47 to the shrink;s couch. Thanks bondjames for providing the truth.

    Hey @FLeiter,

Let's keep the topic on track. You don't like TC. That's cool. But there is no doubt he's about the only consistent, bankable star at the moment (and for the past twenty-five years).

Like I said, my good friend, Mic Rodgers, Legendary stuntman and so on..., explained the Dubai stunt as being Cruise (yes wired, but he did it...; good for Tom, coz I wouldn't do it).

But, on topic: CR is the best action film since DH...? Y or N?

    Thanks... P

@Creasy47 and not just photos, there are more than enough videos and BTS docus on youtube where you can see him do that stuff live. There's no argument about Cruise doing it for real

Hey, Peter. Not the one who brought up other films. Please look back at this thread. Your decision to selectively scold one person, while ignoring the original sinners must have been an unwittingly oversight on your part. You're forgiven for the lapse.

There was a book written in the 80's about terrorists taking over one tower of the World Trade Center in NYC. The hero is able to get from one tower to another using wires and ropes(hmm-m-m) and fight the bad guys. It was Die Hard and MI combined. I think the author was J. C. Pollock, but could be mistaken.

@FLeiter, don't make false claims and this thread won't run off the rails as we reply to point out that you're incorrect.

Back on topic, I still wouldn't say CR is the BEST action film since 'Die Hard,' but one of them? Absolutely.

It's incredibly difficult to make a great action film, especially with all the capes n tights we're getting nowadays (although the Russo Bros seem to keep their films fresh and exciting (I like THE WINTER SOLDIER a tad more than CIVIL WAR).

I just watched LONDON'S FALLING last night. It limped over the ninety minute mark and was soulless.

Just goes to show that a DH or CR are pretty unique (and it goes back to the themes of the films giving a point to the action).

@FLeiter, hate on Cruise all you want, but he's hands down the most energetic, crowd-pleasing, impressive action star that Hollywood has right now. Fact. Let's see Daniel Craig strap himself to the side of an Airbus, or climb the world's tallest building.

Absolutely. There's no need to take pot shots at Tom. The man is a great actor and a beast when it comes to stunts. and action. In fact, I can't think of any A-list actor who even comes close to him when it comes to doing his on stunt work.
