I think CR is the best action film ever, so...

    Agree!

I always considered it to be more of a thoughtful Bond, featuring some great action, rather than an action Bond.

CR is an excellent film....but the best action film since Die Hard? I'm afraid I can't agree.

For me, DH3 & T2 ace CR in the action stakes. Both immense films as well.

Yes, calling Casino Royale an action film is like calling Rocky a boxing movie. Rocky actually has very little boxing in it. It's a drama with boxing. Casino Royale has action but I would not call it an action film.
  • Just my opinion, but I would say that the opening Madagascar chase set piece is probably one of the best mainstream action sequences from the last decade or so. For me however I would say my favorite bit of action from CR is the Miami airport chase. Possibly my favorite of all of Craig's action scenes/set pieces. Just my personal taste.

Greatest modern Bond film thus far. The action never ceases to be great, gritty, dirty or enjoyable. I'd say it's less action too, more spy thriller. QOS on the other hand manages to get every chase scene you can in an action film (car, foot, bike, boat, plane\helicopter).

don't agree its not even an action movie.

I'd say its certainly one of the best action films of its decade. Since Die Hard though? Not really sure.

    @bondjames
T2 certainly contains some great action scenes that still hold up...even if the rest is rather cheesy.
DH3 I'm not sure if I can agree. I like that film but the writing is pretty ropey and I can't think of a single action scene that genuinely sticks out.

I'm in the group that love both the Madagascar action sequence and the Miami airport sequence in CR.

    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Hard Target
    Universal Soldier
    Taken
    The Rock
    Con Air
    Who Am I?
    The Replacement Killers

... are all better action films than CR.

CR is frustrating movie, it was a great entry for Craig and then he forgot to deliver in the next three movies with each movie the action became less impressive.

For me MI4 & MI5 trump Cr on the action front. They are really good actioners.

This thread is a trick question because CR is not the same action movie genre as Die Hard, Taken and company, since CR is not flat-out action like these guys. The card game/Vesper love story by themselves disqualify CR, since it does not aim to have the same style as Die Hard, The Rock. CR is a fantastic movie, don't get me wrong, but IMO it can't be compared to Die Hard. TND or QOS can be compared to Die Hard, since they are balls to the wall action films, but not CR or SF. If you take the Parkour chase by itself, then yes CR is the best since Die Hard. The film as a whole: not possible to compare it to Die Hard.

Best action movies since Die Hard: Leon The Professional,, Die Hard 3 Terminator 2, Con Air, The Rock, Face Off, The Killer, Hard Boiled, Taken, The Raid, The Raid 2, The Man From Nowhere, Bourne Supremacy, Bourne Ultimatum, Mission Impossible 4, Mission Impossible 5, Mad Max Fury Road, John Wick, Man on Fire, Non Stop, The A Team (a favorite of mine), 13 assassins, Rambo 4, Hardcore Henry, Dredd, Ronin.
  • OK but it is an action movie. I mean come on. It's an action movie. You can't watch the Madagascar chase, Miami airport chase, stairwell fight and Venice fight and somehow say that this isn't an action movie. It is.

Die Hard is 'only' an action movie. CR is a lot more. Both can't be compared. Sorry, but it's impossible. CR is more apt to be compared to 'Collateral' (an action/crime film), where both have insane action scenes, but are not solely action films. CR is action but no way comparable to Die Hard, Taken and whatnot. Those are filled to the brink with action. CR with it's card game and Vesper love story can not be compared. The action scenes are comparable, but not the films themselves.

If you want to compare the Parkour chase with the action scenes features in Die Hard, then yes. But it's not possible to compare a film that only aims to be an action film and one that aims to be a spy/thriller/adventure film on top of having great action sequences. It's like comparing 'Star Wars' and 'Criminal' as science fiction films, because one is 100% sci fi, and the other aims to be an action film with a tiny bit of sci fi elements.

Amen. CR was fantastic. Show me a film that has fights in the air, fights on airport runways and fights in a collapsing building. Makes any Tommy Cruise film look like a toddler riding a tricycle.

And yes, the Parkour chase from CR is in my top 3 action sequences in the last decade in mainstream hollywood.

But if we broaden our search, it has some serious competition.

I found the action sequences in DH3 (car chase, boat escape) to be more impactful than those in CR (Madagascar aside). However, I agree that action isn't necessarily DH3's strong suit either. I thought DH2 did action far better than CR, as did Ronin, MI2, & True Lies for starters and that' just those films up to 2006.

That doesn't make them better films, but their action is definitely better.

CR has one standout sequence imho, and that is Madagascar.

@bondjames which car chase in DH3? The one where they go across the park in the taxi, or the other under the rain where Bruce Willis tells Samuel L Jackson to yank all the car's cables and to hang on tight? Both were epic IMO.

The 2nd one @DaltonCraig007. I love that scene where the car's spinning in the rain and Willis is shooting out of the window. I have the same car though (I didn't buy it because of the movie), so I'm biased. You can't pull the ABS wire out - that bit is just movie magic. I actually love the first sequence too.

DH3 has an epic feel to some sequences (like the car chase through the park, or the train crash) that's missing from later films with similar sequences (like SF for instance). It all seems like it's done for real.

In fact, all this talk has made me want to watch a DH film tonight.

MI2? Was that the one where Tommy throws his purse at the baddie? Yawn.

You don't think having a house coming down on top of you and you must dispatch the bad guys and save Vesper better than having Tommy growing his hair long. I know I do.

@FLeiter, hate on Cruise all you want, but he's hands down the most energetic, crowd-pleasing, impressive action star that Hollywood has right now. Fact. Let's see Daniel Craig strap himself to the side of an Airbus, or climb the world's tallest building.

:Let's see how truthful that is from an expert stuntman-Randy Butcher. A man who does this kind of stuff for a living. Here's what he said about Tommy jumping around:

Butcher: When Tom starts his run, and then jumps off, with that city in the background, that is one of the most beautiful plate shots I’ve ever seen — somebody shot that from the roof of the building in the movie. But Tom jumps off a build in a studio, with a green-screen. He falls about 25 feet or so, and then it cuts to the side view. Tom Cruise may have fallen towards an air bag, and then that shot was married to the plate shots of the city. Then we cut to a wide profile shot: This is not Tom Cruise. But at the same time, this stunt is not being done from those buildings. They went out and got plate shots. Then they actually built models of this city, projected the plate shots on 3-D models.

Watch the stunt guy closely in this side shot, after the shot of Cruise jumping off the building — you see him start to fall to the ground, and ever so slightly, he moves forward, which is gravitationally impossible. So, I would guess that he’s on what we call a highline.

Then, when he falls on the building, they may have had Tom Cruise falling against a green-screen, on a cable, for maybe 30 or 40 feet, to get those shots with the camera running beside him — but that was not done here at this location. Good stuff, though.

So THE EXPERT says Tommy DID NOT do this stunt. And of course everyone admits that Tommy hanging by his fingertips to an Airbus is fake. Two for two Creasy47.

    Love your suit.

It's the best Bond film since 69. African Rundown is one of the best chase sequences ever filmed too.

@FLeiter, ...but he did both of the things I listed, regardless of what your "expert" says. Fact. Look up BTS photos of both stunts, you'll clearly see him doing them.

Here is randy butchers filmography I am noticing something surprisingly interesting films he claims he knows how the stunts were completed he did NOT work on... At all in any way.. That is like me saying the batmobile in batman begins was all 110% cgi and was never built. Unless you work on a film you can't say for certain what is real and what isn't you can just go based on bts and the film itself. Claiming bts stuff is wrong or "staged" wether your a fan or in the Industry is wrong and by all means ridiculous unless you worked on the film but since he didn't he isn't in expert in anything regarding those films..

I mean, you can't argue with a candid, behind the scenes photo of Cruise doing the stunts. Speaks for itself.
