'Hi, I've come for the role of Events Manager at the Enfield branch'.

'Superb. Take a seat. Before we start, a couple of questions. How would you feel about visiting the grave of your predecessors' deceased wife and ambiguously referring to her in polite conversation? If it's awkward perhaps you could have your own spouse murdered to give a frisson of authenticity and make things, you know, nice and neat. You'll find he left a bunch of unwanted possessions in the top drawer alongside a stint of self-loathing and a chronic bout of athlete's foot. Feel free to embody his very being at the earliest opportunity.'

In theory this thread ought to be closed but its getting so surreal and hilarious that I think we're all enjoying it too much so please dont mods.

Thing is its not even reserved to a change of actor. FRWL Bond who has been to Tokyo is obviously different to YOLT Bond who hasnt (and incidentally prefers his martinis stirred not shaken).

I guess that explains why Sean's first two are very Fleming-esque portrayals and from GF on he plays more movie Bond. And now the comment in DAF about Sean being on holiday makes sense too. He took a few years out to go backpacking so they brought Laz in on secondment.

Its all coming together now. Thanks @Mendes4lyfe for opening my eyes.

Anyway I can t spend all day here I've got to call HR at the office and get a list of every person who has ever worked for my company that I never met and then spend the rest of my life driving up and down the country visiting the graves of their dead relatives.

Don't stress ..you apparently have a 12 year grace period. :D

I've noticed that those taking the code theory seriously have gone strangely quiet ...

They're just gathering evidence to place before us ? ;)
    Or ........
Could the theory be true and the powers of EON have silenced any
    Organs of truth ?

Imagine getting a job at some massive multinational like Coke that has been going for a hundred years? There must be literally millions of graves to visit.

Do they let you do it during work hours or do you have to find the time yourself?

I'm surprised the capitalist economies of the west survive. Shouldn't the only profit making industry be flower sellers and guys peddling hot dogs and drinks to the entire working population who spend 9 to 5 queuing outside graveyards to pay their respects to people they have never met?

Just when I thought it can't get more surreal than with this NikkiVanZyl or whatshername thread it does, with this !!
The entertainment level is gigantic and the whole thing is just priceless.

Strangely in both instances @TheWizardOfIce is omnipresent in those "discussions" and somehow the center of it :-?

What worse is again bond has gone rogue in the following films
    Diamonds are forever
The man with the golden gun
    Licence to kill
    Die another Day
Casino Royale (heck he is called James Bond before becoming 007 for goodness sake)
    Quantum of Solace
    Skyfall
    Spectre

And yet he is still James Bond!!!!
Go on odd job hat or Mendes 4 life or any other people who believe the theory explain that away!!

I would have to outsource or text condolences from an AMC theater.
  • Well I guess I am the one that reignited this discussion (not before I was given an official warning mind you). Lots of strong feeling on this but not a lot of dealing with facts or evidence.

My position is that the codename theory has not been contradicted, and nothing I have seen on this thread has persuaded me otherwise. I'm not dogmatic about it but it is a legit way of viewing the series.

@RC7 claimed to have debunked my points but he barely addressed my points. I don't know what colonel sun has to do with it but you can only go on what it's in the film.

OK @Oddjobs_hat, now drink that martini right because you may be called upon to be the next bearer of the James Bond code.

The proponents of the theory are devising their theory then backtracking to bit and pieces to support that theory.

The better way to do is to review all the author interviews, screenwriter interviews and filmmaker interviews and actor interviews then postulate a theory.

It's a nonsensical theory with not benefit to the holder of the rights of the screen character.

@Oddjobs_hat argument goes a little like this - it can't be contradicted so you can't say it isn't true. Now I agree with the comments above such as the references to Bond's past. But that line of argument could lead you to say all sorts of things. Like I could say James Bond supports Hull City because none of the books or films say he doesn't. Stupid.

I was wondering is it just James Bond that's a codename or do all agents
carry the name forward like Bill Fairbanks 002 ? How many Bills have
there been and when Alec Trevelyan died was he replaced by another
    smart Alec ?
I'm guessing it saves MI6 a fortune in monogrammed gifts. :D
  • Haha its not a perfect theory. But neither is the that one says Bond never ages.

As for the grave, why couldn't Moore's Bond have been good friends with Lazenby's?

There is no theory that Bond never ages. The films are just a snapshot of the same character through a different lens, where time, space and context all shift according to the whims of the film makers. That's why searching for theoretical validation is a mug's game. The one constant that everybody involved with the films accepts is that James Bond is one man.

Nearly four full pages of everyone getting baited into discussing something that is 100% false. Why not just let the four or five people, maximum, on this planet that do believe it continue to do so?

Exactly right. There's a level of insanity creeping in, hopefully temporary and rectifiable amongst those perpetuating it.

Youre doing better than me mate. I'm currently in a rowing boat with a wreath on my way to the middle of the Atlantic. It turns out that the bloke who was assistant manager 20 years before I joined the company had a grandad who was in the navy during the war and got torpedoed by a U-boat about 500 miles off the tip of Greenland.

And after that I've got to fly to Australia as the woman who used to order the photocopier ink has an aunt who emigrated to Darwin and had her ashes scattered somewhere in the outback.

This is costing me a fortune and I'll soon have used up all my annual leave!

    And I thought I have a strange job/hobby

It's no hobby mate. This is part of employment law these days.

A coincidence that Bond only started visiting colleagues graves after the UK entered the EEC in 1973? I think not.

You are lucky in Switzerland you don't have to put up with this crap from Brussels. It's certainly been influential in making me decide to vote for Brexit.
