Quoting GeorgeLazenby: @saunders I believe the song Diamonds are Forever actually was a degree pornographic. I remember an interview with Barry where he talked about how the song was basically about a cock. "Touch it, stroke it, and undress it" etc.

Correct! If only I could remember the name of the documentary. :-?
It was on the UE DVD for DAF I think. The commentary perhaps? Or maybe it was on a feature about the title themes?

Hmm, I only remember seeing it on youtube and not the DVD. It was a special doc about Bond music. I'll conduct a search and see if I find anything.
  • I actually found this at the IMDb...

"Richard Maibaum's original idea for the ending was a giant boat chase across Lake Mead with Blofeld being pursued by Bond and all the Las Vegas casino owners who would be sailing in their private yachts, which, apparently, would include mock-ups of a Roman galley, a Chinese junk, etc. Bond would rouse the allies into action with a spoof of Lord Nelson's famous cry, "Las Vegas expects every man to do his duty." Alas, Maibaum was misinformed; there were no Roman galleys or Chinese junks in Las Vegas, and the idea was too expensive to replicate, so it was dropped."

It still sounds more interesting than the oil rig climax.
  • I know it was on disc 2 of one of the UE DVDs. It was a special on Bond main title themes, now that I think about it some more.

If you watch from the start you get the trivia about LALD as well.

In an earlier screen treatment for OP, Octopussy was written as a vengeful criminal who uses her knowledge of Tracy's murder by Blofeld to enlist Bond's aid in annihilating SPECTRE. Ultimately, concerns over EON's legal battles with Kevin McClory caused this idea to be scrapped.

@dragonsky: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a TV series by MGM that ran from 1964 to 1968. It based on an original concept named Solo by Ian Fleming. It dealt with American secret agent Napoleon Solo and his Russian partner Illya fighting an evil SPECTRE-esque organization named T.H.R.U.S.H.

The series came from an idea by Fleming (hence the name Solo, straight from Goldfinger) and it's a must-see for any Bondfan. The black and white episodes are the very best, though the first color seasons were fun too. One episode has Luciana Paluzzi as the villainess, probably what got her the role in Thunderball.

It is considered one of the best spy shows of the 1960s along with Mission: Impossible, Danger Man, the Prisoner, and The Avengers.

Does anyone have more details on how Maibaum's original Lake
Mead climax in Diamonds Are Forever would have been? I've always been curious
about it, as well as his original fjord climax for TSWLM.
Apparently according to Tom Mankiewicz, Blofeld was going to escape on the lake but then Bond and members of the mafia give chase in the Las Vegas hotel novelty boats and Bond says the line "Las Vegas expects everyman to do his duty", the chase then involved Blofeld and Bond and a weather balloon that takes them to an abandoned mine where Bond kills Blofeld, if you ask me it all sounds a bit rubbish (even by DAF standards).

Originally, DAF's villain was to be Auric Goldfinger's twin brother. He was to use a diamond/laser equipped cannon aboard his oil tanker. EON later changed the villain back to Blofeld and put the diamond laser weapon into a satellite but the idea of the villain using an oil tanker in his quest for world domination later resurfaced for Stromberg in TSWLM.

I didn't know that. Very interesting. It could have worked great I think.

Both John F Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald were reading a James Bond novel the night before the presidents assassination.

Indeed. Although I'm very happy with OP as it now stands, that premise would've made a good debut for Dalton as Bond with Faye Dunaway as OP.

New factoid: According to "The James Bond Films" by Steven Jay Rubin, when DAF was in pre-production Burt Reynolds was considered for the role of James Bond. As we know, he didn't get the part but made "Deliverance" instead. Talk about film history being definitely altered by that decision.

The parachute ski jump escape used by Bond in the PTS from TSWLM was originally intended to be used by Blofeld in OHMSS. I'm guessing Blofeld would've parachuted off Piz Gloria during the final battle.

I would love to of seen that used in OHMSS.

Sticking with the Blofeld theme, Donald Pleasence had to change his costume more than once when the loud explosions kept causing the white cat to defecate all over him.

I hate to debunk you, but I'm pretty sure that is not correct (although someone does claim that story on imdb). It has been documented that the idea for the ski jump in TSWLM came from this 1975 Canadian Club ad
    http://www.whiskyfun.com/Materialforlog10/Winter-ads-9.jpg

Broccoli inquired as to who performed the jump in the ad and it was done by Rick Sylvester. Sylvester told Broccoli that the jump was not done for real, but could be done and convinced Broccoli that he could do it.

My source for OHMSS ski jump tidbit is "The Incredible World of 007" by Lee Pfeiffer and Philip Lisa. Of course, they could be incorrect. From the same book-the Acrostar sequence from OP was originally intended for MR during the Amazon jungle sequence. However, the river bed dried up prior to filming and the idea was scrapped.

Hmmm, I was thinking that was the book where I saw the ad printed, it must have been one of my other Bond books. I will have to ask Lee about that.

That the film GoldenEye was named after Ian Fleming's home in Jamaica, also called Goldeneye.

(Not completely sure if true, just something i read once): That Ian Fleming got the digits; 007 from the bus that he used to ride every so often numbered; 007.

That Samantha Bond (Miss Moneypenny 1995-2002) is related to one of the earlier Miss Moneypenny's.

The idea of making plastic surgery doubles of Blofeld in order to confuse MI6 and the CIA in DAF had its origins in earlier script drafts of OHMSS where it was originally to have started with Bond having plastic surgery to change his appearance in order to explain his change in appearance from Sean Connery to George Lazenby. How plastic surgery would've explained Bond's accent changing from a Scottish one to an Aussie one is beyond me.

Possibly there could be some sort of throat surgery to change his voice

The Aussie/Scottish Accent is Explained by Broad Chest Theory.
You simply put the accent on the TITULATION syllable.
It all SOUNDS UK to me.

Diane Hartford has a cameo role in Thunderball (1965) appearing at the Kiss Kiss club, dancing with James Bond.
She also has a brief role in Casino Royale (2006) as one of the card players at the Ocean club.
This is the longest gap an actor who has appeared in two different Bond films in different roles has had in the series (to date). A length of 41 years.

    Good Show Benny,
    Quite illuminating.
Now. Who was the Victoria Secret Model in "Casino Royale" with Danny Craig?
    Her name is Alassandra Ambrosia.
