One more reason not to go to a theater. What next, feel free to talk in your loudest voice.

On FB they're walking it back a bit. For me ANY texting during a film is unacceptable. I don't pay $$$$$$$ to have the light of a phone screen in my face.

    On FB:

Press reports we are considering test allowing texts in a very few screens. We know vast majority of audience wants no texting. If ever, we only would pursue this in a way that we can be totally confident ALL our guests will fully enjoy the movie going experience at AMC.

Yes the CEO probably texted that memo to operations on his way to work.

At least it would only be specific auditoriums. Still, is it that difficult to go two hours without your phone?

This is just typical of what a ridiculous world we live in.

Utter morons want to text then do it before they go in to see a film or before it starts if they must but not during a film and the fact a cinema chain is encouraging this is beyond belief.

There is a generation that can't stop texting, thankfully I was around before bloody mobile phones were the norm and no I'm not unhappy about that at all.

I'm happy to have been born at a time where technology was not a crutch or an excuse for people to properly socialise.

Ridiculous idea. Why the hell go to a movie if you're going to text during it? I, for one, will no longer visit any cinema that approves this practice. I've seen people texting during movies anyway and it is such an annoyance because screen glare can easily catch your eye. Such an awful idea.

And don't get me started on mobile phones with buttons; click click click.....

Hopefully it just stays with AMC. If Cinemark starts pandering to this crowed I'm going to be pissed.

It'll be seen in a lot of theaters, especially after AMC's acquisition of Carmike Cinemas. However, the interview alludes to them having texting/non-texting theaters, so if they managed to dedicate theaters solely to those who wish to text, and it doesn't interfere with a movie I want to go and see, then that's fine with me. Why anyone wants to spend money on a movie ticket, just to stare at Facebook the entire time is beyond me.

Ridiculous news. Most of the AMC chain has closed down in my area, so hopefully this is something I'll never see. It aggravates the hell out of me.

Very good point. There's too much negativity towards using your phone in a theatre for them to come up with a proper reason why it should be allowed.

It will only blur the line, I like no doubt most people put my phone on silent and put in my pocket when watching a film at the cinema. Giving licence to text makes it ambiguous as to what people are actually doing with there devices.

I've just never seen the need to use a phone (other than an emergency) during a movie at all. What's so important on Facebook? What sort of text or call might you be awaiting that you couldn't have skipped the movie for? It's obnoxious.

Agree, when I go to a movie I go one hundred per cent to watch a movie. Though admittedly I have not had a Facebook account for years, does not interest me.

Humanity has just reached a new low.

Given America is the barometer of western decadence then I'm flying to Syria to join ISIS. I bet they don't allow people texting during public stonings and beheadings.

You can be their new propaganda minister. You'll be adored by millions of murderers.

By the way the CEO of AMC used to be the CEO of Starbucks I believe.

Why pay $10 to text in a theatre when you can do it while driving your CAR for free? [-(

Not that I go to the movies anymore, and thankfully there aren't any AMC theaters near me that I know of, but what a stupid decision.

Actually, I take that back. It might not be a stupid decision, as this could hasten the demise of cinema's exclusive right to new releases and help to get same-day home release here more quickly.

While we're on this topic, anyone heard of 'The Screening Room'? Some service where you pay one base price, and it lets you access movies that are in theaters for a specific price per each one. Supposed to be pretty expensive for each movie, but it's another attempt to get people to stay home and go with a digital version, rather than going to the movies.

The article I read about it made it sound as though each film would be $50 for a 48-hour viewing window.

In theory, I think it's a good idea, but at a $50 price tag per film, plus the $150 for the required set-top box, I'm not sure it would increase my viewing of new-release films. But, it would eliminate my going to the theater ever again.

You have to come to Switzerland.
Many cinemas turn off the mobile net once the movie starts.
Most are watching out for people with flashing displays and tell them to turn it off.

Positively? No, it's the most negatively shocking news I've heard today.

I just bought my 55" 4K. Now I need never go out. F#@k AMC. I'm christening it with THE SPY WHO LOVED ME and a large doobie.

Hmm, something with huge sets and so much glamour like The Spy Who Loved Me is perfect for a 4K.
  • I think it's absolutely stunning and pretty shameful that people can't sit in a cinema for two hours or so without having to check their phone or look at Facebook. Utterly self obsessed, rude and there's no need for it whatsoever. People need to switch off and immerse themselves in the film, or just don't bother going.
