According to boxofficemojo spectre has been solely in drive through cinemas only for th last two weeks, so this could explain the sudden jump in performance, as it's a different way of seeing the film in your car!

Oh? That's one of the weird American traditions I'll never understand. Why would one want to watch movies while sat in a car? Ugh.

I've got to say that I'm glad it hit 200 million but think Sony have added something to the gross so it could make 200 million for them. I mean boxofficemojo where saying the estimate on Friday was 3000 thousand and now the estimate for Friday is 12000? That's 9000 thousand different from Friday? Anyhow it looks better on the final tally so I don't care how it was done.

I noticed that also. I don't know if Box Office Mojo made a mistake yesterday, or got revised information from Sony today.

Yes, i noticed the big change in the gross estimate for SP for Friday.

Something a bit fishy here? Maybe Sony executives themselves all went to see SP this weekend in North America, to tip the film over $200 mil.

Yes, seemed really strange that the estimate all of a sudden quadrupled.

Oh Yeeeeah! Americans do things in their cars that Europeans would never do ...
    :\"> :)) ;)
I think Sony has played the "dive in" card in the very last hand and it has won. Finally, Spectre is going to be in the top 10 of 2015 in North America with over 200 million. Of course, we should wait untill actual figures, but if it is not today, SP will have its last milestone this week. Congratulations!

However they did it I'm surprised and pleased.

SP may have stayed longer in the NA market than in some other markets. Yes?

I have no doubt that Spectre would have hit 1.1 billion if Star Wars hadn't been released.
Switzerland, one of the many European countries where Spectre broke record after record it was practically dead once Star Wars opened.

Without Star Wars, Spectre would now be the most successful Bond ever, because you have to count in the very different currency exchange situation to 2012.
  • I don't think so.

The performance in the U.S., down more than $100 million, vs. Skyfall, or more than 33 percent, is the main reason why SPECTRE didn't reach $1.1 billion.

SPECTRE was released in the U.S. in early November. Its opening weekend was $70 million, down from Skyfall's opening weekend of $88 million.

SPECTRE was lower than Skyfall from the start in the U.S. and this was well before Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out.

SP was it's own barrier to a larger gross.

Star Wars had little to no impact on SP. Which can easily been proved by looking at the weekly drops.

As said and proven many times there are two simple reasons for not reaching SFs Box Office.
    1. 120 Mio less US Box Office
    2. Appr. 130 mio less in US Dollar due to unfavorable exchange rates.

It is as simple as that

Sp did cross the 200 mil US box office this week end. I look at a lot of box office numbers and I am not surprised by the final numbers here in America. SF had the final bow for Dame Judi and was the main reason it did so well. In comparison it still did about 20% better than QOS which is not bad. If you look at some recent movie franchises like Hunger Games they had numbers that diminished as time went on. It was a great run from GE to SF that each movie had growing numbers for nearly two decades and there is room for big numbers in the future for 007.

Finally! It's been a slow crawl to the finish line but that's a nice round number. If I'm not mistaken that slots SP into the NA top 10 for 2015?

It' been at that spot for a few months, after it passed Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation.

We can wax lyrical about such things, but there's absolutely no guarantee that a 'better' SP would've equalled a higher gross. To listen to this forum you'd think Rogue Nation was the Citizen Kane of the genre, yet it still made less than SP in the US and had it's ass handed to it internationally. Box Office still means nothing IMO.

It was good no doubt, but I've watched my SPECTRE BD 5x as much as my Rogue Nation one.
Bond rules; Hunt is merely cools.

The best thing about the last couple of Mission Impossible movies of course is Simon Pegg!

I don't think anyone thinks MI:RN is anything close to Citizen Kane. But it was SP's closest competitor and yes I wanted SP to at least beat MI which it did.

The domestic weekend estimates have brought Spectre across the $200mm mark.
  • Here's the updated figure with the actual weekend numbers: $200,011,902.

In 92 screens it made $23k across the weekend. Then in 63 it made $30k. Then in 16 it made $42k. Now in 9 it has made $45k.

Once they knock it down to 1 screen it really is going to take off.

Yes. I used to think that when the number of screens go down, the money gathered goes down, but I now see it's the opposite here, and I suppose they're just narrowing it down in search of that one perfect screen and then it'll be over the billion in no time.

    Is that accurate?

I mean "Craig’s deal is not very rich – $7M upfront plus about $4M on the back end"

    sounds very low to me?

It has been reported various other places to be considerably higher.

Craig has zero cache outside of Bond.

By the way, if Deadline article is right, EON and MGM had an incredibly good deal with Sony.
