I confess I was already choked when the theme began over the Colombia screen before I even saw the dots. Stirring classic and unmistakable

none of you mentioned the thing that the gun barrel just fades out after the blood runs down, and it does not open for the pts! This happend for the first time!

Actually, the last time this happened was in FRWL. The dots get smaller and it cuts to black before fading into the training exercise.

the last time was in GF not in FRWL
Actually GF cuts straight to the facility, not to black.
I am sure I will notice this the 2nd time I see the movie..but how did they transition to the PTS after the gunbarrel ?

Seriously though, I went giddy when I realized it was back (at the beginning and in it's true form).
Didn't mind the segue to Mendes' intro, if that's what it takes then fine.

It felt like a statement - this 007 has gotten over his angst and will now proceed to kick some premium arse.

I won't know about that until I've seen it myself. I've only seen the leaked clip, which was short and cut away immediately after "the dead are alive" text.

And not only the music began over the logos, but also the Bond theme WOTW started a full 15 seconds before the title sequence actually began, that was so freaking cool !!!

And a clip of the barrel:

Thanks for the gunbarrel music, @antovolk. I've wanted it since I first saw the film. I wonder why it's not in the official soundtrack.

My 2 cents on the actual gunbarrel: I loved it! I'm very glad Kleinman went back to Binder's original design. The lack of his Brosnan-era movement made it even classier, and Craig's pose is a serious contestant for my all time favourite gunbarrel pose.

While not perfect, I was very happy it was back at the beginning. As Fat Bastard says, "Baby Steps. "

Since I started this thread as my personal gunbarrel video thread, might I add my latest gunbarrel? It's my first in 2 years!

I must say, the gun barrel sequence of SPECTRE is already among my favorites of the series! I Love it! :D

It was pretty good (the music is great) but I wish that the blood flowed organically rather than just a wipe down, and that the GB opens into the film

I made a comparison between the last Maurice Binder gunbarrel sequence from "Licence To Kill" and the newest gunbarrel sequence from "SPECTRE":

    gunbarrel sequence "Licence To Kill":

    gunbarrel sequence "SPECTRE":

I must say, Daniel Craig really had some time to properly rehearse the gunbarrel sequence :P. No wonder though, because for every film he had to film a new sequence. And in all honesty? I think Craig's pose in the "SPECTRE"-gunbarrel is mag-ni-fi-cent! In my opinion the best pose together with George Lazenby's one-knee pose.

It's self-assured. Bond has no doubt at all when he shoots!. With every pose so far there were minor issues. Bob Simmons had to 'jump' while he turned (Halloween!), Sean Connery looked like he was suffering from Parkinson (too shaky), Roger Moore always had to use two hands to fire a gun (pussy), Tim Dalton has a nice pose, and looks a bit like Craig's one, but Pierce Brosnan looked like a tree (too stiff and straight up).

Also look at the original Maurice Binder design in the "SPECTRE" gunbarrel. It's updated to 4K off course. It has been retouched a bit by Daniel Kleinman. But overall....the details from the Binder design are back...

I like how SPECTRE's gunbarrel has a Saul Bass design look to it.

Wasn't it a return to the original Maurice Binder design?
Yeah, but with a 60's Bass clean & sharp look.

The design and pose are brilliant. The music could be improved though.....my personal favourite gunbarrel music is TLD.

I like that one too. Quite familiar to the gunbarrel music of OP and AVTAK I think.

Casino Royale is the only film that its was ok for not to have the gunbarrel in the beginning. QoS, and SF no excuse to not have in the beginning

I tried to recreate/improve the gunbarrel with what I had available and to suit my rather traditional preferences when it comes to the gunbarrel.

I did a custom rescore for the Gunbarrel. I went with a Moore style influence.

Nice job, but can you make it open up onto the Day of the Dead?
Thank you very much. I can certainly try.

  • That the SP gunbarrel doesn't open up to it's next scene is the gunbarrel's first failing. It is ruined by Mendes' 'the dead are alive' thing.

The second failing is that Bond's gun is visible as he walks. That was just shoddy.

I noticed that too, and it's the first time it's happened so blatantly. In a few other films you get a glimpse of the gun but this one is in your face. They put the GB at the front and still mess it up

And it still is the best GB by far in the Craig era which is a scandal in itself.

The SP gunbarrel is decent, but it just seems a little too stiff for me. Dalton was more free-flowing and his walk was classier in his gunbarrel, otherwise the SP gunbarrel works fine (other than the recycled music from TND/TWINE). It's nice to see the gunbarrel return to the beginning, and equally nice to see it return to a more traditional design.

The darkening effect is uniquely nice too, but I prefer the more traditional blood flow.

    Absolutely.

I'll be generous and give CR a free pass as the GB coupled with YKMN is so epic but after that the 3 Craig GBs are the bottom 3 of the series.

At least they are ever so gradually getting better SF was a step up from QOS and SP a step up from SF. I don't have any confidence that they will get it spot on for B25 but perhaps they might get final it right for the next Bond.

Sad to think though that if B25 is a great film Dan might go down as best ever Bond yet never having had a GB that wasn't f**ked up in some way.

I felt that SF's gunbarrel was better than SP's. It's more unique, it's more effortless for Craig, the gun isn't quite so obvious when Craig's walking, and the music is a much better rendition of the Bond theme (SP basically recycles the TND/TWINE tune after Bond shoots).

The only points I can give to SP are for being at the start of the film and for going back to a more traditional gunbarrel design. Otherwise, as I said it's a bit stiff and unoriginal.

Yes and ironically I think Craig has filmed more gunbarrels than any other Bond to date.
