Is it impossible to agree on everything Bond?

You all probably noticed the boom in Bond rankings, Bond reviews and what not when Spectre was about to come out. Have any of you ever actually seen a reviewer's ranking with which you can agree completely? Even on these boards it's half a miracle if you find yourself agreeing with another member on most things Bond.

If you look at other film series it's quite easy to find someone with the same taste. There are many people who don't like the prequel trilogy of Star Wars and adore the originals. Same goes for Harry Potter, I'm only fond of 3-8 and I can find someone who agrees with that in a second.

Not so much for 007 however, try and find someone who likes YOLT, OHMSS, TMWTGG, LTK, TWINE on top of all the obvious choices (i.e. FRWL, GF, CR). It's near impossible.

Is it because there is such a big variety of Bond films or are there other reasons?

Highly unlikely, since there are such a huge number of Bond films, and with each addition to the franchise it becomes less and less likely that people will agree completely with another's rankings. Then the individual likes and dislikes of the various elements in each film will also vary - so I'm afraid that by human nature, it's virtually impossible to agree on everything Bond.

Someone on this forum told me that their ranking was very similar to mine, though. However, there are a fair few people here with OHMSS at the top or near-top, for LTK, I think there's a couple too. The highest I've seen for YOLT is four. And I believe @DaltonCraig's favorite Bond flick is TMWTGG, while there are some who like TWINE the most here too. DAD, though, I haven't seen too high.

There's a few trends, but yes it is impossible to have the same opinions. Even if two people have similar rankings, it will be for different reasons. The films are just too varied in tone and style and have any sort of "universal taste".

The LOTR, SW and Harry Potter films are at least part of the same story and often have the same tone (eg HP films directed by Yates)
  • I agree, the films are way too varied for there to be a common consensus. A person's taste in the series will probably be influenced by what they are introduced to. Those introduced to Connery's era probably won't like Brosnan's films, and those introduced to Moore's movies won't like anything to come out from Dalton, etc.
That's a generalisation though, since my top five is GE, GF, CR, TLD, TSWLM. Each of those has a different Bond.
Critically, it is a different matter, I would believe.

It's inevitable - every fan feels like they 'own' the franchise, it's that sense of ownership that creates an emotional connection between the fictional universe and it's fans.
The flip side is that everyone feels like their version of this universe it the only correct one... so no, we will never agree entirely :)

I think that answers the original question. If there are people out there who have TWTGG as the best Bond film then an advocate of every variety of combination of the 24 films must be out there.

Christ there's probably even someone out there who has DAD top!

    Ha!

I had DAD on top in 2002 for about half a year, if that counts. Of course, it dawned on me later that GE and TND still are better.

My Top 5 by the end of 2002:
    1. GE
    2. TLD
    3. OP
    4. TND
    5. DAD

I believe there are atleast two other people who rank AVTAK 5th place. But i don't know or there is somebody ele's who said it be his/her Goldfinger.

I also notice there be more GF dislikers like there are more Goldeneye (My number 1) haters.

i personally have From Russia With Love and Casino Royale as my number 1 and 2 respectively (Connery and Craig are also my favorite Bonds)... I've seen quite a few rankings on here, where people have rated those two films towards the bottom of their list......... it really just boils down to personal taste - and not everyone likes the same thing....

but i do personally think there is a lot of grey area, where a lot of people will "sort of agree" on varying Bond issues - but i think it's impossible to think - much less expect everyone to be on the same brain wave...

what shouldn't be hard to expect is tolerance - something this place has gotten progressively worse at in recent years.

Close to my own ranking of the films, CR would be my #2 very close to my #1 OHMSS
with FRWL at #4. :) although I watch them all all the time. :D

I have FRWL at #1 and CR at #4. The one I don't rank that high (although it's in my top 10) that others probably do is OHMSS. It's really because of Laz. I don't dislike his portrayal, but he doesn't bring enough of the edge I like to see in Bond to rank the film higher.

Of course we all have different tastes, it's one of those, there's no right or wrong choice.
OHMSS, I just love. The last of the 60s Bonds. I even like Lazenby's acting, gives Bond
a sense of vulnerability, that I wouldn't have believed with Connery . The locations,
cast, are all simply perfect for me.

I agree, it's a beautiful film to look at. Especially when Bond arrives in Switzerland. Laz definitely gives vulnerability to Bond as well, probably more so than any other Bond.

I only wish there was just a little more steely glare from him. Most of the other Bonds give that off in places, but he always looks so gentle & harmless to me, despite his excellent fighting skills.

I can fully understand your reasons, my Dad hated Lazenby saying he wasn't a patch
On Connery, but as I loved the Book, with Bond falling in love. For Me I can cut George
some slack. In many ways I think of OHMSS as a special stand alone edition in the series.

I agree. That's how I see it as well. A quite faithful, sort of parallel universe adaptation.

I think Die Hard Three came as close to a Bond film as you can. An epic robbery, by
A nasty organisation, and very much on an epic scale.
