I have got no idea if this has been done before, please don't kill me if it has, but we've got 12 Bond novels by Fleming, I was wondering if you liked them better or worse than their respective movies.

In the tradition of all the games on this board, I'd suggest a book vs. film battle. Each week one title and the possibility to vote once, providing of course that you've read the book.

Week 1: CASINO ROYALE

My vote would go to the book.

Book: 1
Film: 0

@GoldenGun, the more I have become aware of the differences between the media, the more reluctant I've become to choose between them. However, I like you and the idea for this thread so I'll participate. I just expect a whole lot of ties. ;-) We'll see. :-)

    Casino Royale

The book is intense and concise. The film feels bigger but then again, it's a 2006 high-profile Bond film, stripping a lot from the established formula but still forced to meet some of our expectations, including action and some high stakes (e.g. the attack on the airport), to be commercially interesting.

But, and this argument will come up often here, the book is a book, a spy thriller written in the 1950s and the first in the series, whereas the film had entirely different goals set for it and came from an already pretty loaded legacy. Ergo I think they both excel in their respective medium / series. I love both, with intensity. CR, both as a book and as a film, offers an almost religious experience for me as a Bond fan.

    And as such:

    Film: 0

The book is great, but not among the best. The film is, so therefore.

    Book. 1
    Film. 1

    Thanks, @DarthDimi.

I don't disagree with you that the two mediums and/or eras cannot be compared.

However, I was more aiming at which of the two you personally enjoy more. :D

One of those is correct. We'll see which when we get there. The other is actually pretty far up my list.

    I'm assuming it's TSWLM?

I'll go for the book as well. Yes, the movie was one of the most faithful adaptation of a Fleming novel I saw (with FRWL and OHMSS sharing the first and second place respectively), and I love it a lot, but the book is better :

“THE SCENT and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling – a compost of greed and fear and nervous tension – becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.”

For that opening alone the book wins it for me...

    Well, that's it folks.

It seems that Ian Fleming outwitted Martin Campbell and Daniel Craig by two votes.

For me, it's the book again. It's my personal favourite of the novels and while the 1973 adaption certainly has its moments I'm not so extremely fond of it.

It has to be the book. It's not even a contest, really. EON's Live and Let Die ranks near the very bottom for me, just above the likes of Die Another Day and The Man With the Golden Gun.

    LIVE AND LET DIE

The only thing the book doesn't have is Jane Seymour. Other than that, fascinating novel, very tense. So I'm going to go for the book.

So good was that book scenes and plot points from it were used in three Bond movies. So, for me, it's book all the way, even if the "Tour of Harlem" scene can be cringe inducing for modern audiences.

The book is a clear winner here. Roger Moore's first effort receives no votes.

For me, the book would have made quite a good film script. There was no reason at all to use the title for James Bond in Space. Again, the book is more my taste.
