HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PT. 2 is the #1 film in North America debuting with $101M

Which is like $25 Millions off from initial predictions that it would gross a $125 Million opening weekend :-). Which is understandable. I think "Hunger Games 3: Mockingjay Part 1" was the nail on the coffin. What a bloated piece of fake crying.

Exactly........MJ2 is dropping like a lead weight, after its initial performances.

When one looks at the current BO of films in the worldwide market......its only Bond that is progressing strongly from week to week.........and there will still be strong grosses to be had upto Xmas.

Even in the North American market, recent releases apart from Bond are failing big time.

Let's hope Bond stays strong and in second place ...would be a plus if American reporters would comment that Bond remains strong.

And why didn't Sony market film in NA more that it was the #1 film at the BO. That's a huge draw and marketing tactic used here and I don't recall them doing that.

Bond is second but with a significant drop.

edit: Let's hope it made 100m in the rest of the world this week. That means the movie broke even and from now on every buck will be a profit.

That's still good ...about half. It's ok.
  • Worldwide, SPECTRE has tracked down over $670M.

For what it's worth, I saw MJ2 last night and except for about 45-50 minutes in the middle, I didn't care for much of it at all
  • Well.....let me change the title of this topic :-).
  • I'm starting to think....that Sony/EON won't be that pleased with the box office figures so far. It takes a bit too long to earn the money back with this film.

Well if what I heard was right...this movie already made a little profit.

Nope. Because of right and splitting of profit and A LOT of money spent for marketing...this movie needed to make 625m (or so) dollars to break even.

edit: But it's ok, A LOT of movies do not make profit. The Hobbit/LOTR movies had a small profit when you split the money for producers and rights, and marketing..

I think so too. SONY seem too demanding...they thought that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed and that movie did really well....so...let's hope SPECTRE will make more than 708m dollars which is what TASM2 did.....and it seems like SPECTRE will make more than it so..let's hope SONY had same expectations for TASM2 and SPECTRE

If they're not pleased then that's their problem. Next time they should get a better handle on managing the preproduction stage, i.e. the script writing process and not go unnecessarily over budget!

Bond movies should cost around $225 million at the most and if you're going to shoot on location, let's see it and be absorbed in it, considering how much it costs to shoot on location.

SP was an entertaining film for me but so many of the issues that work against the film should have been avoided and it worries me that the producers are ignorant to what the real issues are. This isn't a casting issues, it's a fundamental script issue and the lack of an appropriate director. The Bond brand and the goodwill of SF isnt enough! There has to be an earnestness in making and delivering an excellent product.

It's sitting at 67% audience rating at RT, 7.2 at IMDB, & 6.9 User Score at Metacritic, so it's all reasonably consistent, no?

It should have had an 77% audience rating at RT, 7.6 at IMDB, & 7.3 User Score at Metacritic.

On top of that, it should have received a 7.7 Critics Rating on RT and a 7.0 Critics Rating on MetaCritic.

Alas, the entire SonyLeaks (negative) publicity brought a whole new narrative to the production of "SPECTRE". Names like those of Idris Elba came out those leaks, as Amy Pascal's personal favourite to step in the shoes of Daniel Craig (Bitch!). What happened then was a re-focus of the (gossip) media on other aspects of the production. They zoomed in on "Who will be the next Bond Daniel?" and "I'd rather slash my wrists!". The goodwill from "Skyfall" therefore more or less diminished, as I do think that Americans are a bit more sensitive for these kind of words. They do prefer the pastiche of Tom Cruise than the straightforward "streetguy" that Danny Craig is.

That's the real reason "SPECTRE" is rated how it is right now. Because in all honesty the film should have been rated lower than "Skyfall" and "Casino Royale", but not thát low! On top of that, if the SonyLeaks didn't happen, the production budget wasn't scrutinized so much, and probably everyone would have said that this production budget was logical, especially after the 'perfect storm' that "Skyfall" was.

    SonyLeaks guys, SonyLeaks, SONYLEAKS, S O N Y L E A K S !!!

I'm sorry @GG but I don't think the general audience remember the leaks. I think more critics overly dooming and the quality of the film. UK critics more forgiving of the same faults.
  • The critics' rating could've been higher, sure. At least higher than that of Quantum. But if going by IMDB, a deeply flawed ratings site IMO, Spectre's user rating is comfortably within the top 10 Bond films. What's unjust about that?

I dont get some of the numbers here or the headline. 400 mill worldwide, when its at 670?
Then dragonsky with it will make more then 708. I mean, its not a question, that it will do quite a bit more.
    Some see it at 900.

So, all in all, its quote a confused mix right now.

But GG, please explain the title.

  • Bond nerds fighting among themselves! Awesome! I want war!! I don't care what anyone thinks Moonraker is still the best 007 movie imo!!!

It's sarcasm @Germanlady. Now it looks like "SPECTRE" easily crossed the $400 Million global mark. Like it's a huge achievement.

I don't see the point in the sarcastic title change. The movie is still trucking along and is almost to $700 million. Care to change your predictions, @Gustav_Graves, or is your mind still set on it making $1.2 billion?

Hopefully they'll reign in the budget next time and focus on script before production

GG, still makes no sense to me. Like ???

Why nor make it 850 or 900?

I always thought the Sony leaks and all of their inside negative junk would take its toll in the press which always piles on. It did and that's why I think that the reviews are off by about 10%. Nothing else can explain the idiot at Forbes calling it the worst Bond, or that puss boil of a critic, Rex Reed complaining about the empty streets in the car race in New York. There was a "let's dump on Bond" narrative started by Sony executives themselves in the leaks and the negative agenda was happily picked up on by the press.

Competition will hurt, but SP's main obstacle in getting above 900m is ER which some posters in here warned about months ago. All said though, I'm still pleasantly surprised that SP is doing as well as it is outside the US. After the bashing it took in some of the US press, I thought it would blow back and also hurt the BO outside of the US, perhaps it has hurt some, but mostly it hasn't. If it can carry through with some decent smaller weekly counts until Jan, it might surprise yet and hit $1 billion, but it will be very tough. Near $900m looks more likely. Given how THG is crumbling by the hour, SP's BO is pretty decent given its budget and other problems.

Hey GG, keep doing what you're doing. I enjoy your round up of stats and data, and your optimism. You've been more right than most of us when we were all stunned by the bad reviews and some by their disappointment with the film.

There is every bit of reason for sarcasm, as my prediction is shit-covered toilet paper now :-P. It will never make $1.2 Billion.

Anything over $200m will be tough, but a plus in the US. It's the overseas BO that will hopefully give the SP team something to be happy about. They don't get the same high US percentage take from most overseas countries, but with what they've already pocketed over the years, and their deliberate decision to go with a monster budget, I think for EON and co. SP is now all about bragging rights over another possible 1billion film.

  • 677.8 million worldwide, almost 10 million more than expected. SP is going to make over 800 million, I am sure. Remember Japan and South Africa have not opened yet and in USA the movie is still 2nd just before Thanksgiving.

@Gustav_Graves, I don't see the Sony leaks as being responsible for the audience ratings.

Many people saw this film regardless of the leaks.

I thought the audience ratings were on accord of what people thought of the film after they saw it, & not a predictive opinion of the film based on what others said about it.

So in my view, with the number of reviews that have come in across the board from users and viewers, the following ratings:
-67% audience rating at RT (77,358 users)
    -7.2 at IMDB (106,037 users)
-6.9 User Score at Metacritic (518 users)

reflect what the audience thinks of the film. It's scoring between 5 and 10 pts above QoS at the moment.

And why have you changed the title of the thread? Why not go for something more realistic. $950m (my hope) or a little less, as others have said? It will make it more relevant.

i've asked people coming out of the theater what they thought of SP, and an overwhelming majority have said they really liked it... a few have said they didn't like it as much as SF, but still liked it... and only a handful have said they were disappointed... but i do believe that word of mouth is helping SP keep it's steady returns going - even in the face of MJ2 - which isn't drawing as much as we thought it would at the theater (even though it's still estimated at over $100 million opening - i think we figured it would probably do closer to $150 million..... we had 6 theaters set aside for MJ2, and we didn't need that many)..

@haserot,, does THG's crumbling directly help SP re available screens going into the next few weeks with the tons of new openings coming up? I'm just guessing, but it would seem that the more new openings fail the more it helps SP not only re audience choice, but holding on to decent screen counts.
