So at 0.01 am last night was Belgium's premiere. After watching the excellent 'Skyfall' again, expectations were very high for number 24.
2hours and 30 minutes later I just had the feeling: what a waste of time ! Is this the best they can do ?
To resume: SPECTRE is just dull and disappointing, extremely thin plot (is there a decent plot anyway?), the whole Morocco part is just ridiculious, Léa Seydoux is tasteless as a Bond girl and Christopher Waltz is so baaaaad as vilain. Not bad as mean, but just so wrongly played. Problably one of the worst casting errors of the whole saga. You have the feeling they tried to put so many things in this movie (continuing the Skyfall-feeling, referring to all the Craig movies, introducing back an old ennemy, is Edward Snowden in this movie ?, ...) but as a whole it just failed big time.
Maybe expectations were to high; I was hoping for a masterpiece; it turned out to be an overcooked egg. Like DAD was the worst and the last for Brosnan; it's definitely time for Mendes to stop and probably for Daniel too. How can they continue this story arc after the mess they made in SPECTRE... ? It's time for a fresh start like they did with CR.

I deem this review irrelevant, you clearly didn't watch the same movie we did. I consider it to be one of the best Bond movies.
I feel this was just the starting point on bringing a character back who quite frankly had been tarnished thanks to the Austin Powers movies, it needed someone with the acting calibre of Waltz to potray a Blofeld who was very sinister and not a caricature.

Can't disagree only to say I'd maybe at a pinch put QoS above SF, heresy I know.

    Quantum at the bottom
I haven't decided if i like SP or SF more, have to watch SP a couple more times
  • Did the script leaks influence the writers to change things, and possibly mess some things up?

opinions are like arseholes everybody has got one.

On the matter of personal taste you can comment but accept them as they are valid opinions. Somebody has the right to dislike any movie and can comment on that. If you disagree fine do not be a bloody Putin about it.

If SPECTRE does end up making over a billion then rest assured, we will get Craig's YOLT. I can't wait to see what batsh&t insane OTT stuff will happen in B25 if SP is mega successful :D

Agreed. I keep sayin, SP writes Bond 25. You just know what's gonna happen. But Craig has to return for it to make sense, if not, we'll get a totally clean slate, which would be a waste of a potentially terrific SP continued story line in Bond 25.

They can continue with the SPECTRE storyline with a new actor no problem. But I do hope we lose Mendes & Newman.

Will it make sense to have Swann in love with another actor? I think that's asking too much of the audience. Unlike the end of SF which left us with a completely clean slate, the next writer is going to feel under pressure to continue the stories and themes (and perhaps tone) within SP, a much harder task IMHO

    +1.
  • Haven't seen the film yet. Seen majority of the clips, all of the trailers/teasers/promotional material, read some reviews, and couldn't help myself to some of the spoiler tagged posts in other threads. I sort of know what I'm getting going into the movie (ie essentially reading a book and going to see the film).

My (hopeful) take is when it comes to Craig's Bond films... if I want a good movie, and a good Bond film as well, I'll watch CR. If I want a nicely quick cut action packed film, its QOS. If I want a character driven, darker Bond, it's SF. And if I want to have relax, have fun, it's going to be SP.
  • After a second viewing this afternoon, I cannot express more strongly just how more enjoyable my experience was. I left the first screening feeling incredibly underwhelmed, and yet left the second screening, elated. I said numerous times in previous posts in this thread, that I sensed the film merits a second watch to appreciate it for what it is, and this turned out to be true. Once you enter the second screening already anticipating the change in tone, the campiness, the pacing, and the lack of screen time for Waltz, you can just sit back and enjoy the piece for what it is, which is a fantastic two and half hours of entertainment.

On second viewing, the PTS is even better. No doubt tops Casino’s PTS for me. The cinematography is even more beautiful too, as you digest it more with every viewing. All the performances come across more strongly and believable aswell. It is, however, still noticeable how stronger the first half of the film is compared to the second half, which is still, a bit of a mess.

Spectre is no doubt a grower though, and I can’t emphasise the following more strongly — for those who leave/left the first screening underwhelmed, go back and see it a second time! It’s worth every penny.

Agree with every word of this 100%

There's a few quick scenes I think the they should have cut or incorporated into others but by and large I enjoyed the second viewing. The first half flies by.

Right then. FINALLY seen it. So, I'll get straight to the point:

    First viewing - 4th Nov '15

No two ways about it - 'SPECTRE' is indulgent, playful and cocky, which is i.m.o exactly what had been missing from Craig's tenure up until now. There is a sense of irresistible boyish charm abundant that evokes the spirit of Indiana Jones and yes, early Bond.

The PTS immediately sets the tone, with DC gliding across the scenery with such a swagger that you can't help but chuckle and think to yourself that the Bond of old is back. Dan looks so 'in the zone' here that it makes you wonder if he even had to try. This is Craig's Bond film. And he grabs it by the scruff of the neck.
Whatever Skyfall was sorely missing, SPECTRE has. It isn't particularly smart, and there are things that slightly better writing & a more subtle approach here and there could have done for it. But to hell with post-modern angst and trying to please everyone (yes, SF again...) - I haven't had this much FUN watching a 007 flick since... the 80's? Yes, that sounds about right.

Somewhat inevitably this high doesn't quite last the full 150 mins & it rather runs out of steam toward the middle of the 3rd act - Mendes & co. seem to have forgotten that to successfully offer up a beast like this also requires you to pull off a coherent ending. But be honest - even the best Bond movies don't always conclude with a proper climax, do they.
Chill, sit back & above all: enjoy :D

    The good:

    - Old fashioned & bold PTS. Far and away the best opening since TLD...
    - Escapism & realism are finally both present in equal measure - not overdoing it but still giving the punters what they crave.
    - DC is solid as a rock. His ultimate Bondfilm (so far).

    The not so good:

    - Doesn't really know how to close the deal.
    - Alpine setting had so much more potential.
    - Forgettable Bondgirls.

I agree wholeheartedly about Daniel Craig @AceHole.

He's probably the best thing about all his four Bond films anyway but here his confidence in the role just exudes from the screen. Yes he may have had more dramatic material in CR and he was a lean efficient agent in QOS but in SP comes the super confidence that we haven't had since Connery.

I think DC for the first time actually seems to be having fun, even though in interviews directly after he looked & came across as totally knackered & tired of Bond, which is false if you look at recent interviews since he's had time to rest & reflect, I myself, totally understand this.

I couldn't disagree moore. If you found the Brosnan and Moore movies too frivolous but also found Craig's first two a bit sparse and austere then SP is right on the money.
