SPECTRE: Could something terrible happen to 007 at the end (novel "FRWL" reference)?

I just finished rewatching the entire "Dark Knight" trilogy. I still love that epic set of films. Marvellous work by Christopher Nolan. And so many Bond nods to discover. Fox is obviously the 'Q' of these films :-). Not to mention that wonderful 'Fox'-workshop. Talia reminded me a lot of Elektra King. And obviously "The League Of Shadows" has similarities with "S.P.E.C.T.R.E.".

I actually think these films should be watched to prepare for "SPECTRE". First the "Dark Knight" trilogy, then Craig's first three Bond films.... One thing though. The ending of "The Dark Knight Rises" makes me thinkk...that perhaps something bad could happen to Bond? Similar to what has happened to him in the finales of the novels "From Russia With Love" and "You Only Live Twice"? I thinkkkk...I am also going to prepare for that scenario. :-O

Just think about it. In ALL Bond films so far -from 1962 until "Skyfall"- Bond always survived. We hardly know any other scenario than that Bond survives the villain. And despite some sad ending -Bond losing two loved ones, Tracy in "OHMSS" and Vesper in "CR"- he was perhaps emotionally bruised..but he didn't die. Nor there was a real cliffhanger that makes us wonder what happened to Bond.

It is different in the novels from Ian Fleming though. In "You Only Live Twice" bond survives, but barely. He sufferes an almost fatal head injury during the finale in Blofeld's "Garden Of Death". And in "From Russia With Love" it's a real cliffhanger. Readers experience how Bond is being fatally poisoned by Rosa Klebb, unless the real film.

Perhaps this kind of scenario will not happen at all. BUT remember, Sam Mendes is directing. Combined with all the rumours about Craig leaving, I think this could be one of the best kept secrets of "SPECTRE". But I can be completely wrong also :-). What do you guys and girls think?

If a Bond movie ends on a cliff-hanger such as we saw in the novel From Russia With Love, it would be far less jarring if the actor playing Bond, not to mention any other carry-over characters, was definitely going to carry over into the sequel film. If this is not the case, then we get what we had in OHMSS leading directly into DAF. It would also help if most of the production crew, especially the director and scriptwriters were also going to reprise their roles.

The trouble is that it's very difficult for such professionals to commit their time so far in advance, both in terms of availability and artistic desire. Mendes, for example, wants always to return to his first love, the stage. This sort of work requires huge contiguous blocks of a director's time ands it could well lengthen the amount of time between the cliff-hanger and its resolution. Not only this, but the general viewing public, as opposed to die-hard fans, will always feel short-changed with a cliff-hanger because their dedication to returning to see a sequel is less motivated than a that of hardened Bond nuts, such as ourselves. Most general viewers will feel miffed if they haven't seen the first movie because they will have to invest time and money getting up to speed.

There is this coupled with the fact that any cliff-hanger would have to be followed up in rapid succession, so that the viewing public don't forget about the first movie. This is more impractical today than it was in the sixties when post production times were far shorter than they are today, thereby allowing films to be produced almost on an annual basis.

I welcome the notion of a cliff-hanger ending because of the sheer novelty of it, but unfortunately the practicalities mentioned above make such a thing an unlikely eventuality.

Let's see what will happen :-). But I am prepared for whatever surprise is in stall for us. Compared to the release of "Skyfall" I still don't have a clue about the villain's scheme or the final scenes, the cliffhanger so to say :-). I think "SPECTRE" is shaping up to become the best Bond experience I had in a decade.

--> FIRST, I saw "Casino Royale" for the first time in cinema with a date! God, NEVER do that again. I still get nightmares of this guy whining about the film being "so not Bond!". And then the 2nd time I saw it in Groningen, the movie reel broke down, so during midhalf of the movie we had to get out...and got our money back. How nice is THAT!

--> SECONDLY, I saw "Quantum Of Solace" in my parent's small farm village, in a newly opened cinema, that wasn't even a real cinema, but was a temporarily cinema screen build on an older theatre. God, and then all those farmboys who kept talking during the film! So annoying. And I firmly disliked the movie anyway on first showing.

--> THIRDLY, when I wanted to see "Skyfall" on premiere day with a friend, the ticket controller said to me that the date for the tickets were for Saturday! I made a mistake! But they offered us a seat in the back and my friend wanted to see it anyway. Gosh, and I didn't have my glasses with me. Another disappointment!

--> But THIS time around "SPECTRE" will stun me of first watch! It has to!

@GG I did the same with SF. I was in London the week SF premiered ...purchased tickets then went the wrong night.

Ended up waiting until SF debuted in the US and saw it in Houston. Kinda weird watching a film saying "hey I was just there...could have should have seen it there. *sigh*".
