Can we at least hear some of his vocals before we go negative? Remember what people said about Craig before he proved himself?

That's a bit different though. I think we kind of know how Sam sounds. Not many people, along with myself, life his voice. I do not like his tone of voice whatsoever. But I still have excitement to find out what it sounds like and what the lyrics are like.
    Let's hope you're pleasantly surprised...

This is a wicked huge assumption, especially considering how successful Sam Smith is.

He obviously has fans, but there's still people who don't like his kind of music. All those who like him must love depressing songs. Most of his music is depressing.

Writings on the wall might be the only song I like, due to it's bond themes.

Of course there are people who don't like his kind of music, no one's disputing that. But that's a lot different than saying "not many people like his voice". You're moving the goalposts.

tomorrow is Thursday and the last day before the song is released... hopefully it is the exact same length as You know my name so I can pop in my head phones and listen to that while the credits play.

As much as I love YKMN (it's my favourite Bond song - heck, it's my favourite song ever!), I think you should listen to this instead:

I fear my days as a lyricist are over already. I'll get my coat!

No, I like it! Very ... modern. Maybe I can contribute.
How about this: the second stanza, from Blofeld's POV

"He was Achilles to my Hector,
he wiped the floor with my dear Spectre."

Brilliant work there. John Barry could have done wonders with this!

    @Walecs

now i know that if Nolan ever does a Bond movie, this is what the music will sound like... about as uninspired as most of Zimmer's work for Nolan is. lol.

As much of us who aren't that keen on this and seem to getting grief for it a good number of people have convinced themselves that it's going to be amazing, I hope is for their sake.

We've heard 15 seconds of an intro and some are already thinking we going to be getting a classic. To be honest the likelihood is that none of the Craig themes like the Brosnan ones are likely to age outside of the films or the fan base as they are generally not that memorable. They look good on the credits but unlike the classic Barry songs they don't really live outside of that, no one is likely to be humming WOTW or SF in 10 years time.

By picking the flavour of the month artists they pretty much guarantee that, the song is just a marketing tool and nothing really much more, I understand the reasoning. Adele's theme played into big time SF's box office and they are thinking Sam Smith will do the same but produce a classic that stands the test of time, no I don't think this something they are really bothered about.

To think BB & MGW said it's going to one of the best themes of the series. Seriously it isn't and that just pure hyperbole, no way is this going to compare with Barry's best.

@Shardlake That's a very stupid assumption. And hardly true. I don't even know how to reply to such a comment. All I can say is that you haven't heard the bloody theme so shut the front door.

I think I can say with all confidence that this won't compare to You Only Live Twice or Diamonds Are Forever, let alone Nobody Does it Better or A View To A Kill.

That is an assumption I can make and is not likely to come back and bite me in backside.

You actually think this will compare with John Barry's prime?

I really like it @Walecs. Very dramatic. The person who made this obviously got tremendously inspired by Thomas Newman and his "heartbeat" score for "SkyFall" :-).

Anyone want to place any bets on whether the word "Spectre" will appear in the lyrics? I personally think it will
  • Posts: 1,068
It would be really nice if it didn't but there's a chance it will be bolted on and another base covered judging on past form by EON - I'd say 70% of me says yes, 15% no & 15% I wish I knew BUT I'm going to maintain vigilance and wait patiently for just over a month until 19:50 in my local Vue screen 1 on the 26 / 10 / 15!!

I'm for it if he can do it tastefully, which I don't think would be hugely difficult, but time will tell.

This song is also the perfect opportunity to put "Octopussy" in the lyrics.

if this is in any way aimed at me, all I'm saying is at least listen to the lyrics before judging - it could be worse than Die Another Day techno weirdness, it could be somewhere in the middle, or it could be the best Bond theme we've ever heard - Sam Smith could convert the those who dislike him or turn his fans against him - without hearing any of his vocals from TWOTW, we don't know. That's all I'm saying.

I doubt it will, but I'm glad you've already heard it to say so definitively

i'm not trying to persuade you one way or the other when it comes to the Sam Smith theme - everyone is going to have their opinions on it, and i respect yours..

but what do you really expect BB&MGW to come out and say?

"Sam Smith's song will be okay at best.. We don't believe the shelf life on this one will match any of the classics, much less the last one with Adele.. But as long as we eventually break even with what we spent to have it recorded, thats all that matters."

EON has picked "flavor of the month" artists for the past 40 years - i don't understand why you think this is something new... I am not going to guess your age, but if your close to my age, then the Bond songs of yesteryears you are looking upon is with the rose tinted perspective of nostalgia... almost every artist they chose to record the Bond theme was at the peak of their prime, or close to it - maybe not so much Tina Turner or Chris Cornell - but when Cornell did YKMN, he was starting a solo career run having just come off of a brief amount of success with Audioslave (and obviously Sound Garden, but that was the 90s).... and quite frankly, ever since Sheena Easton recorded FYEO, which went on to be a very successful song on it's own outside of Bond, they've tried harder to find more contemporary mainstream artists for Bond themes....

is it a marketing ploy? oh most definitely it is - but that doesn't mean they make the decision based solely on what will get them the most downloads and make the most money... because if that were the case, we'd seen Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, or Beyonce have a go at a Bond theme by now - or whatever other pop trash you can think of... so at least give them a little bit of credit that they are trying to find "talented" artists... whether they have long successful careers is not the fault of EON, but the artist themselves.

I am not a 'Sam Smith fan' and don't like depressing music, but I still like his music. If someone is worth their chops, which I think is true in the case of Sam Smith, you can admire and appreciate the work they produce.

I'm not sure how unique I am in this value, though. I'm someone who isn't a big fan of anyone in particular -- it all depends on the song. It just so happens that some people make more songs I like than others. When I listen to a song, I don't scrutinize the lyrics or try to do research like, "wow this romantic song is actually written toward a dude." If it sounds good, I listen. If it doesn't, I don't. Half of the time I don't even know many of the lyrics of songs I like and something about that makes them more magical sometimes.

Sam Smith happens to be in the middle range of my rankings where he has multiple songs I like to hear when they play on the radio.

    @Shardlake

I think you are walking the line of passing opinion as fact. When I said I think we are in for another high quality song that could possibly get award recognition a few pages ago, it was certainly stated with that line thoroughly in tact. As for "Craig and Brosnan songs don't measure to the classic," that's just your opinion. I hum the theme tune to Casino Royale and it's been 9 years. I'll be humming the theme tune for Skyfall in another 10 as well. Maybe you didn't like the last song, but that doesn't take away from all the people who do like it nor its Oscar. At the performance, Adele sang back-to-back with Shirley Bassey performing Goldfinger. It's not a stretch of the imagination to envision Adele being called back to perform at future Bond tributes. Skyfall is a top 5 song for me and I don't think I'm alone in that thought.

For reference, I would consider Adele in the upper tier of my rankings as a performing artist. I think her voice is gold. She could probably sing the telephone book and I would like it.
  • I'm going to wait till Friday before I hive my opinion on the theme. I'm a huge bondfan no matter what, and I'm excited form th fantastic 15 second teaser. But Sam just needs to hold up on the vocals. I know nothing about singing, but I just mean, he has to sound as good as the tune. I just hope that tune kicks in a bit more like with skyfall at least.

I still listen to DAD and AWTD %-( because they are Bond songs. There's nothing WOTW can do that will stop me from enjoying it as a Bond song

Hmm. I like die another die. I think it was a very cool song that suited that film well. I hate another way to die. Just about as forgettable as quantum of solace. That film was poor. Any bond fan should realise that. Yes, it has its moments, but that wonkey camera work and the forgettable, uninspiring villain didn't help. But skyfall and spectre bring Daniel's era to a more memorable, solid end.

The worst two bond films. Die another Day and Quantum of Solace.

I think the best bond film is still Dr No.

****ing speak for yourself! Why are you the arbiter of correct "Bond fan" opinions? I'm sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you, but some of things you say bother me.

Also I like Another Way to Die, but not as a Bond theme. As a standalone track I think it's awesome.

I agree with you on AWTD. As a Bond theme it fails for me, but on its own it isn't half bad of a song.

I actually like this song and consider it a near miss. It, like the movie itself, is somewhat disjointed. Bond is in a bad place following CR. A different take on the vocals would have helped.

pairing Jack White and Alicia Keys was not the wisest move - their styles just didn't mesh in this song... it's like the producers couldn't make up their mind between the two and just said F it, we'll use both lol... in hindsight, they should've either just used one or the other, but not both.

but i always take offense (for some reason lol) at people who blame Keys for ruining the song - she has an amazing voice and she is super talented, and i think she, by herself, could've done a great song.

Not getting "Casino Royale" in the song was a disappointment for me as well. Maybe Sam can score the hat trick and work all three in.

What you on about. Why is it bothering you. I'm simply giving my opinion on the theme songs. That's what forums are for, and obviously people are going to have different opinions. I;m just saying, for any long time bond fan, you should know that AWTD doesn't meet the standards of a great bond theme. It was rather poor

so if there were long time fans of Bond who did in fact like the song, somehow they're opinion would be wrong?
  • No. Theres going to be people who like it. Not everyone has the same taste. But as an actual bond theme, no way does it meet the standards. Its good as a standalone song for many, but I don't know many bond fans that actually say, yes, that was a great bond theme. But lets go back to Writings on the wall now. Its released tomorrow.
