Is the Niven era the silliest part of the Niven era?

Maybe we can just make this thread about discussing 1967's Casino Royale. Or if we should just delete it due to overwhelming silliness, that's okay too.

I've actually never seen this movie. Is it worth one watch just to see what the fuss is about? I've heard from diehard Bond fan friends that this should just be totally avoided.

The music is fine & Mata Bond is gorgeous. Allen is funny. Drunk or stoned this is pretty cool.
But an altered state is kind of a *must*. :D

I feel obligated to add, though my statement is sincere, I am in an altered state almost any time I am not at work.

Familiar, but I can't place it. It looks like William Hurt.

I have fond memories of the film, but I wasn't sure that was where it was from. I think it just flashed on screen a couple of times during one of his trips.
Yeah, I was going for indistinct.

I've said it before, and I say it again : that movie (if we can call it that) was a perfect blueprint for what Bond would become in the 70s and 80s : use of music not germane to the movie (we hear the theme from "Born Free" and "What's New Pussycat"), plot that makes no sense, stupid animals (lions and a seal) scenes that make no sense. But if it's a mess, at least it's an entertaining one. I prefer it to DAD.

    Quite frankly, that's absurd.

Is it, really ? One word : Moonraker. Think about it.

Yes. Similarities are merely coincidental. Moonraker is nearly a carbon copy of TSWLM, which in itself is a "remake" of YOLT.

It's a culmination of EoN trying to "up" the success of TSWLM.

The whole film was silly but that was the point of it rather than being a parody of James Bond.

CR 1967 is an awful 'basterdised' vertion of a brilliant novel. Niven is about the only plus point.

I thought that until Eon finally made CR properly. Now I can ignore the 67 version and pretend it never happened.

Wasn't there a moment when Peter Sellers dressed as Hitler says to a lady "I'll show you yours if you show me mine"?

That has to be the silliest/lowest point of not only the movie but also Sellers's career.

CR67 should convince everyone that taking LSD and making a film is not a good idea.

Which amounts to about the same, insofar as now have 39 years of irritation too, of which thankfully I only lived 26. CR 67 is outrageaous even for Niven standards. It's unique in that it has almost more directors then stars and still got produced. I don't know what kind of drugs they were selling to those executives, but it must've been pretty strong stuff..

That's the other Bond movie full of technical skills but with no plot except the age of Bond :)

The UFO and the Cowboys and Indians. It's not even really a James Bond spoof in that big a sense either, which was also rather silly as it was meant to be! :))

I think Barbara Bouchet is another plus point. However, she was miscast as Niven's Moneypenny. She should have been a Connery Bond girl.

CR67 may be the silliest of the Bond movies - that is, if this one counts as a Bond movie - but it's also the one in which the silly stuff actually sits well with me. The fact that OP copied the 'poisoned pen' joke from this movie, still makes me chuckle. If it hadn't been for that embarrassing climax, the only part of the movie I passionately hate, CR67 might get even more praise from me.

I watch it as a child and was confused at the comedy elements taht seemed so unbond to me. I also remember Sellers as being awful, unfunny and far too unattractive to women to play a 007 type role!

I don't remember if it was on this same thread, but I have mentioned that when I was a kid getting this on TV (any Bond film) was a treat. No VCR, much less DVD or downloading for us '60s and '70s kids. Just knowing it was Bond was enough. As I got older I hated the thing, but now I have grown to enjoy it. Mostly.

Back in the days when, if you wanted to watch a movie, you had to wait until it showed on tv. I think the success of many poor man's Bonds and b movies were due to this low availability.

Thats been my feeling. I'm one of those who regards it as an abomination, a sullying of the brand. Good grief it makes Never Say Never Again seem almost canonical!

I caught it on cable once, just so I could make the above assertion (actually, I confess I didn't even finish it). I certainly dont own it on disk, and am appalled that it was include in the 50 Years of James Bond Posters book.

It was on tv in. 2006 when CR was released. I couldn't watch it all it was so painful.

The question is: do people find it better or worse than DAD?

Personally I prefer DAD if given a choice. I could listen to the admittedly excellent soundtrack or CR on YouTube.

At least CR67 was meant to be a parody.
