In reality the only acceptable accesories for a man are a 1953 Rolex Oyster Perpetual with a white face and steel band, a gunmetal cigarette case and an oxidised Ronson lighter.

The 1953 Rolex Oyster Perpetual might look good on a man older than 50, but it's a watch that would look ridiculous on anyone under the age of 40. As for the cigarette case and the lighter, smoking is simply not as cool anymore as it used to be.

For a man of any age - to wear a vintage Rolex is probably (dependant on model) the ultimate style statement.
As for smoking - you obviously didn't read the thread!

I've always said, when in doubt, rent North by Northwest or To Catch A Thief and watch Cary Grant, or of course early Connery. The gold standards. Can't go wrong.

Add Steve McQueen in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' to that list and we have all we need to know about men's style.
Ironicaly, I think Craig's tailor - when appointed - could learn a lot from McQueen's look.
Physically Daniel probably resembles him more than Grant or Connery.
And 'The Thomas Crown Affair' is a solid testimony to the fact that it can be done!

Dependant on model. Exactly. The 1953 Rolex Oyster Perpetual is not one of those models. It would look great on any man older than 50 but I wouldn't call it the ultimate style statement for younger men.

Very good point re: McQueen in the Thomas Crown Affair.

Craig's suits are fine and he looks good in them. The QoS suits were perfect and although I have no problem with his SF suits, he could have done with a slightly longer leg but on the whole I though the suits complimented his body and he looked good.

I thought that too, but hasn't paid close enough attention. It certainly doesn't look good when there's pulling around the button, as here:

    Skyfall-Rope-Stripe-Suit.jpg

    and here

I actually gave a suit to my younger brother for doing the same thing. I guess I should have kept it ;)

Looks like they were going for the McQueen look to an extent with Craig in the CR final shot. Suit sleeve is a little long IMO (I prefer a little cuff) but the collar is great. Pin stripe is a good idea for him because it accent's the vertical and makes him look taller.

Sleeves are very long, with the gun cocked like that, should be at least an inch of cuff showing. The ill fit of the waistcoat is more noticeable in that shot than the one I found earlier.

IIRC the Brioni suits were just modified off the peg? I may be misremebering, but I think that's right. Would explain a lot of the fit issues.

A waistcoat is something that only M should wear. Bond should stay away from them as far as possible. They wear fine in the sixties, but nowadays only older gentlemen should wear them. Then again, if it was up to me, Bond would never wear suits. (The occasional tuxedo would still be allowed.)

When I look at this photo, I see a gangester:
    http://www.hedford.com/product_images/c/811/casino_royale_three_piece_suit__91555_zoom.JPG

    THIS is Bond:
    http://screenmusings.org/movie/blu-ray/Quantum-of-Solace/images/Quantum-of-Solace-0966.jpg

Also, it's funny that while Daniel Craig's clothes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would not all be appropriate for Bond, he had a far better style in that film than in any of his Bond movies.

I've never been a fan of Bond carrying machine guns (the Walther should do fine), and that adds to the gangster feel in that scene. I don't have a problem with the 3-piece however.

I did like that cardigan look in QoS though, and this one from CR:
    Venice-Cardigan.jpg
As has been said, Craig generally looks great in casual gear. He's the Bond who wears that look best, along with Connery.

That's because he's toting a big arse machine gun.

At the end of the day, all of this is nonsense anyway. It's all bullshyte. Arguing about the man's suit, cufflinks etc and what is or isn't proper yet, the intelligence agency he works for kits him with multiple Aston martins; yeeeeeeaah. The merits of what's couth is irrelevant. Bond is supposed to get away with the absurdities and the ridiculousness, it's essential to the charm of the series. Bond gets shot twice and falls from a speeding train thats on top of a high rise bridge, survives, mops around then goes back to work but sod all that, it's unrealistic because his suit looks too tight!
  • I agree with previous comments... Get Bond Grant's blue suit from North by Northwest and you're pretty much done. Also I hope they don't choose anything garish for the cufflinks... Just something square and uncomplicated.

Hi, Dan has a lot of input to wardrobe. He's a massive Steve McQueen fan, the QOS look was homage to McQueen.
The Billy Reid Peacoat in Skyfall (Shanghai) is called the Bond coat, but this is because Billy Reids first store is on Bond Street NYC Dan owned one of these coats for a few years prior to becoming Bond and introduced it to wardrobe. He also picked out the Brown Armani leather jacket from Casino (Miami airport). The Casual Dan Bond is classic Americana, things like vintage Levi jackets (Skyfall) Chinos (Casino). Spectre I expect to see him short turtle neck heavy knit sweater, leather bomber jacket and likely Grey cardigan and Brown cordereaux trousers. I think there will be some homage to OHMSS with clothing somewhere. I expect due to locations and time of filming it will be a lot of warm clothing not much short shorts and shorts. Anthony Sinclair recently recreated the Berry colour Slazenger sweater Connery wore in Goldfinger it may feature.

I think the MP5 was good for this particular scene, got the message across, but overall the Walther is certainly the right call.

Bond tends to have touchstones in current fashion, so the waistcoat is definitely appropriate, especially in the context of Bond. It's pretty much de rigueur in bespoke suits currently to be 3 piece.

Craig does casual right, no question. The costume department certainly aids him here too, this is their forte.

Indeed. I just had one made on Savile Row and I'm pretty damn happy with it, I must say. It adds a bit of class.

Thanks @SirHilaryBray. I didn't know about Dan's like for McQueen. I'm sure he knows he's been compared to him many times. The Slazenger sweater is great, but unless he's playing golf in this one, I don't think we'll see it. Speaking of which, aren't we way overdue for a golf scene. 51 years is a long time to wait (54 if B25 is coming out in 2018).

Yes, @doghouse, I agree. I've seen the 3-piece making quite a bit of a comeback recently. Definitely gives a polished look and I think it looks good on Dan given his build.
    ----

BTW, does anybody know of a good book on James Bond fashion/style? I'm thinking something along the lines of Jon Burlingame's The Music of James Bond, but featuring the clothing style of both Bond, the ladies and the villains in each of the movies rather than the music. Something reasonably detailed on each movie.

I think there's a wealth of information to share here in terms of how they set the look for each film, and why they chose what they chose, and would be very interested in learning more.

I'd appreciate anyone chiming in if they know of a good book on the subject.

I still think that for Bond to wear a waistcoat now in the 21st century is just too much. A man wearing a waistcoat nowadays looks uptight rather than cool. M wearing one fits the character. Bond wearing one doesn't.

Some of the GWTDT attire might work quite well, especially in a cold climate.

Been documented for a while that Steve McQueens widow wants Dan for her late husbands biopic. There are some pictures online with picture of Dan against Steve in similar posses, the likeness is uncanny at time. I think it would be a project Dan could not say no too.

Interestingly, McQueen's suits for TTCA were all made by Dougie Hayward and it was this that inspired me to get my first ever bespoke suit from him.

Actually @doghouse, we are both wrong the Dr.No cuff is called "a cocktail cuff" and was specially created by T&A for the movie specifically because Young thought links too chintzy.
    He had a point!

Cocktail cuff is another name for turnback cuff.

I don't want to be pedantic but turn back cuff may be your name for a cocktail cuff but it's not T&A's and they created it!

@bondjames I agree albeit I'd have gone for a chalk stripe rather than pin - I think it makes it more stylish and a little less bankerish but we are definitely on the same page.
That said, doesn't McQueen still look fantastic?
OK, elements today would be changed and the colours and always the best but if you look at the way he was dressed throughout that movie (right down to the Persol shades) it really is the gold standard!

You can still buy a nice version of the Connery cocktail cuff shirt at Anthony Sinclair, I've been thinking about getting a couple.

Turnbull is actually the ones who call it turnback, others call it cocktail.

    http://thesuitsofjamesbond.com/cocktail-cuff/
You might know it as any of these names, but Turnbull & Asser calls it the 2-Button Turnback Cuff and Frank Foster calls it the Cocktail Cuff.

They have started using the name Cocktail to piggyback off the popularity of Bond in the past few years though.

    Look Of The Day

Léa Seydoux Unleashes Her Inner Snow Bunny

It may be one of the more unusual film photo-call venues we've seen but it was definitely the most beautiful and French actress and the star of new the Bond flick Léa Seydoux totally dressed for the part. We don't know about you, but we've got the sudden urge to treat ourselves to some new ski wear...
