SPECTRE: What will the Villain's Scheme of this Bond film be? What's the "Terrible Truth"?

The short plot synopsis of "SPECTRE" doesn't reveal anything about the "sinister and terrible truth" behind the villain's scheme:
"A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While "M" battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind S.P.E.C.T.R.E"

Just a quick overview of the villain's schemes from previous three Bond films:
"Casino Royale": The villain, chess protégé Le Chiffre, is the leading financer to globally operating terrorists. He works on contract basis for a secret organization. But the way he is financing terrorists is tricky and uttermost risky. He is trading on the stock market by means of Insider Trading and Market Manipulation, and when this goes wrong, the bright mathematician opts to an even riskier money gathering operation; to gather the terrorist's money during a high stakes poker game at the Casino Royale.
"Quantum Of Solace": The organization behind Le Chiffre is being revealed as QUANTUM and has insiders within top layers of the most important governments and multinationals. What at first seems a scheme to topple governments for reasons of oil harvesting, is later revealed as an ingenious scheme called the "Tierra Project". A project to buy up water utilities companies and to stockpile water reserves in South America. The villain, philanthropist Dominic Greene, is leading the scheme.
"Skyfall": The villain's scheme in "Skyfall" is of a more personal nature. An important hard disk with top secret information about NATO spies embedded in terrorist organizations across the globe is stolen. Soon a whole WikiLeaks-esque cyber warfare scandal is shaping up. What starts as a chain of deadly terrorist attacks in London -Vauxhall Cross, Whitehall and the London Underground- is in essence an ingenious scheme of revenge pointed at MI6 and "M" and is led by former MI6-spy Thiago "Silva" Rodriguez.

Three wonderful villainous schemes. I love all of them 8-X. One of them is more related to monopolization by using counter-intelligence (Dominic Greene). The other is very personal and focused on revenge (Silva). Then another villain basically wants to succeed in his scheme to get richer himself, without all the emotions (Le Chiffre).

But what about the villain's scheme for "SPECTRE"? The short plot summary basically mentions that there is a "terrible truth" behind the organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E. . What scheme could it be? What could the terrible truth be? And, when reading the plot summary, could the villain's scheme in fact be the biggest project ever undertaken by a villain in the Daniel Craig-timeline?

As I haven't read any of the SonyLeaks, I am not spoiled about this plot part. So therefore I would love to start guessing about the villain's scheme for "SPECTRE" with my fellow forummembers :-P. It would be nice if you haven't read the draft screenplay that has been leaked. If so, then please use spoiler tags if you already know the villain's scheme.

While "M" battles political forces to keep the secret service alive,

Have to say I'm not excited by this prospect. It seems like M has been doing this throughout Craig's tenure.

Yes, but I think this could really be the side-story, and not part of the main villain's scheme. And if it's part of the scheme, then it's only a step towards the villain's scheme I think, the layers that lead towards deceit.

But I am actually way more excited about that "Terrible Truth" behind SPECTRE's plan. The real core plan. No one has been discussing that yet.

I actually think Sam Mendes really wants the audience to get goosebumps out of that "Truth". I believe the reveal of the villain's scheme will actually the most exciting part of the entire film. The movie is called SPECTRE no? So you don't re-introduce that organization lightly, in a similar fashion as how QUANTUM was introduced.

Whereas CR and QOS were very much about Bond's personal life and how he goes on his own mission of revenge, cold-heartedly and without nuance, and SF a tale about revenge from the leading villain, I think SPECTRE will actually a tale about crime in the broadest sense.
  • Anyone into some guessing? ;-)

I won't comment on Spectre but since you wrote an overview of the last 3 main villains, I just wanted to say how much I love Le Chiffre! Seriously one of the best Bond villains of all time and I really like how much Mikkelsen did with the character with relatively little screen time. I believe Le Chiffre is the only one so far who really feels like a 21. century Bond villain.

I think all three, Le Chiffre, Greene and Silva, are memorable in their own ways. But what about their villainous schemes? The plans behind the men? Which one was your favourite? And will the one from SPECTRE be the most horrific and sinister one ever constructed in a Bond film?
  • Anyone care to join in the discussion?

My gut says it will be personal. It's Mendes.

So, more similar to "Skyfall" than to "Quantum Of Solace"? I'm not sure. I can't believe SPECTRE will be solely used for personal reasons. I think there will be a global diabolical scheme, a real "Terrible Truth", but it won't be exposed to us in a Dr Evil-esque style. I think it'll look slightly more realistic.

Regarding the executioners of the scheme, the "Bond villains", I think Silva will be substantially different from the leading villain in "SPECTRE".

Both villains will perhaps be rather psychotic. But Silva's got his psychotism because of personal experiences. And it's mostly related to personal revenge.

The SPECTRE-villain, I think, will be much smarter and sinister, as he needs to run (co-run) a syndicate called SPECTRE. The actual syndicate, SPECTRE, will be his drive for his villainous actions, not his personal experiences. But that's what I think ;-).

I also think that the SPECTRE-villain, like Le Chiffre, will be even more immume of his own emotions. Perhaps he is an autist :-).

The best plot of the Craig era IMO is QoS. It had deception, dealt with water, control of a Latin American country, & used the CIA's greed against themselves (they thought Greene wanted oil instead of water).

CR had a boring villain plot (card game to win back money lost on an options bet? He wasn't even trying to make money - just win it back). Silva's revenge plot was just tiresome (done before in TWINE) and childish (grow up Rodriguez!)

That's completely the opposite of whether it's my favourite movie or villain however. I think LeChiffre was the most realistic and believable villain, and Mickelson did a bang up job. So that's my No. 1 of the Craig era.

I liked Silva as well, but he was a little OTT (in a good way though) and a little retro-comical. He's my No. 2.

Oily Greene is my No. 3.

I don't know what is planned for SPECTRE, but I'm sure it will be quite ambitious in scale. I can't see SPECTRE focusing on revenge purely. Their name implies so much more..... ;)

The most ambitious scheme a Bond villain could ever have: the total control of the whole universe. =)) And the guy coming closest to archiving that: http://tinyurl.com/o3gce4t

LOL, you're having fun no :-P? Now a question for you. How could a return to outer space actually work out for Daniel Craig's 007 :-P? I mean, we know than billionaires Richard Branson and Elon Musk are quite the space fanatics. Their commercial outer space ventures are quite succesful at the moment. So why not bringing back "outer space" in a more realistic way ;-)?

Elon Musk actually once said: "Either we spread earth to other planets, or we risk going extinct. An extinction event is inevitable and we’re increasingly doing ourselves in".
    http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-leave-earth-or-risk-extinction-2013-5

And I think that's wunderful stuff for an actual villain. He actually looks like one :-O:

I personally think that with Gustav Graves the Bond producers had wunderful material for a famous billionaire-turned-villain, but they completely fucked it up with him eventually. But once can also make such a billionaire more "realistic"

@Gustav_Graves I am absolutely sure Bond will visit space again in the future. Once space travel becomes common in real life, there will be nothing unrealistic about Bond visiting space again.

You can have something personal yet large scale. TDK was, in fact all Nolan Batman.

I didn't say you can't. I was responding to the notion that this film will be driven by the villain's scheme. It may in part, but I believe whatever scheme is in place, the mechanics of it will play second fiddle to a personal element, whatever that may be.

Yes of course. My bet, maybe wishful thinking: as this movie seems to be at least partially inspired by OHMSS, the scheme might be about some sort of biological warfare.

I would like that very much.

Like I said, it is mostly wishful thinking. Then again, at least some of my wishful thinking became true. So I think there's some chance the plot will involve biological warfare.

But what about SPECTRE then? Where does the crime syndicate fits in the personal motivation or personal element of the villain? If it would be personal, than it would suggest the role of SPECTRE might be not as big.

I think also "SPECTRE" will have some background history on past events. And yes, there might be a revenge motive in place. But I think the personal element then will still be secondary to the larger scheme. And certainly not as big as with Silva in "Skyfall".

Moreover, revenge can also be a nice little extra on top of the main scheme. How did Kronsteen put it in FRWL? "And we have the chance for a personal revenge for the killing of our operative...Doctor No".

Maybe Blofeld wants to kill Bond and destroy MI6 as a welcome presents to Quantum operatives who joined his organization. Something like: my enemy is your enemy now.

I suspect there might be a personal connection between Bond and SPECTRE. I don't know why, it just strikes me as the kind of thing Mendes might do. The thought of it makes me uneasy, but I didn't think there was a hope in hell they'd title the film SPECTRE. For that reason, I feel like everything I'd assume they wouldn't do, they will. Hence I think Mendes will once again place the 'personal' front and centre. I'm not suggesting what you're saying is wrong, I don't know, this is just a gut feeling I have.

Sounds nice, but I think it's too elaborate, too personal, too Silva-esque. I think the "Terrible Truth" is really something big, something that can destroy peace in the west, that can escalate global conflicts, so SPECTRE can profit from that. And I think that's the ultimate goal of the revived SPECTRE: Making it a much stricter, financially successful brotherhood.

You might be right, my instinct was that too, but I just have a feeling that with Mendes on board the 'terrible truth' they speak of will be much more personal and not global.

I don't find the destruction of MI6 personal. On the contrary it is very large scale.

Some years ago I read a Ludlum novel, Matarese Circle. The Matarese were a killerforhire private op, just worked for everybody and kept the proof. With time they got enough incriminating evidence even against the Commies, everybody. And then the Matarese started calling the shots. Sound familiar? Sound like a SPECTRE plan? To me it does.
