How did you picture Bond while reading the novels.

Mines weird. When i first read Casino Royale, i imagined Clint Eastwood. It's strange, but it just worked so well for me at the time. Weird.
Most people picture one of the actors from the movies.
Some are good at imagining the character straight from the description.
Anyway, who did you picture as bond in the novels?

When I first read them I seemed to be picturing Lazenby, but recent readings resulted in Dalton. Though when I read Wood's novelization of MR, Rog kept popping in. :D

I've always pictured book Bond as a more hard-edged Roger Moore look. Kind of like the poster caricatures of Moore, for both LALD and TMWTGG.

I totally get that. The posters looked great.

I picture a blend of Brosnan and Connery.

I just picture him as described by Fleming, and as seen in the sketch he had commissioned. I've only read the first few novels, but I look forward to reading all of them back-to-back someday when time is less of a factor.

That has always been a wish of mine.
If they didn't do it with Dalton (Fleming hardliner that he was) they'll never do it.

Sean Connery when reading all the books, except:
    OHMSS: Connery and Lazenby alternating
    Wood's TSWLM and MR: Moore
    LTK: Dalton
    GE/TND/TWINE/DAD: Brosnan

Usually I picture Sean Connery I'm his prime or Daniel Craig with black hair.

I tend to see a hybrid of Connery, Craig and Brosnan.
  • When I first read them, Connery was the only actor who had ever played Bond (aside from Barry Nelson, and I hadn't seen that particular effort.) So: Connery, totally, absolutely. These days I do tend to see Dalton if not Connery. Or as @0Brady mentioned, the sketch Fleming commissioned (based somewhat on the look of Hoagy Charmichael.)

I used to try and picture Connery but it never worked, the mind would always default back to the edgier-Rog look.
That's just the way my brain processes Bond.

  • When I was younger, I pictured Brosnan in Benson's and Gardner's novels. But nowadays I don't picture the literary Bond as any of the actors. I form a unique image of him in my head based on a) how the author describes him physically, and more importantly, b) how his personality comes off in the story. Despite sharing similarities, Fleming's, Gardner's, and Benson's Bonds are all still different and I can't picture them in the same way.

I agree with @Some_Kind_Of_Hero. When starting to read the Fleming novels, Craig would be there, but eventually Bond became just Bond. With the scar, the cold eyes and the cruel mouth.

At the beginning, it was up to the book's contents.

For example, I pictured Brosnan in DMC, Craig with black hair in Carte Blanche, a mix of Brosnan and Dalton in CR, Moore 77's look in LALD and Moonraker, Connery with blue eyes in DAF, Connery and Brosnan mixed together in FRWL and finally, a blue eyed Connery in Dr No.

But now I discovered a few years ago the drawing of Fleming, with that typical hairstyle and the scar, I have to say Bond is finally just a character for me rather than an actor's face ( even though the closest mix to the original would be for me one between Brosnan, Connery and Dalton)

Mix of Connery's accent, Moore and Bronsnan's looks/mannerisms.

I always felt like the character of Bond was just really really dark but with some charm and personality.

The two most "accurate" depictions of literary Bond that I've seen, and which I occasionally see in my head when I read Fleming, are Yaroslav Horak's Bond:

    and Mike Grell's

I picture whoever played them in the film
  • 6926002.jpg

Ever since I saw this picture, I've always had that image of Bond in mind whenever I've read the books (keep in mind I've only read Casino Royale and Dr. No so I need to read more of them)
  • Hoagy Carmichael. Kidding.

Connery, he's the iconic image. Today I might picture Craig in CR or Dalton a lot of them time since he is so much like the literary Bond.

Fleming said at one point that he pictured golf player Henry Cotton.

Looks more like Niven than any other Bond actor.

I had a definite Fleming-Bond in my head when I first read the books, but he was swiftly deposed by Dalton the first time I watched TLD.

I picture him as John McLusky's Bond from comic strip, i.e. drawn Sean Connery.

The closest resemblance I can find is Christopher Plummer:
