Your Blu-Ray Steelbook Collection (including James Bond Steelbooks)

I admit, perhaps I did do a crazy buy today. But for me, all these three steelbooks are so utterly beautiful. All of them feature official poster art, and that's why I wanted to have them. You think they will become rare or true collector's items if I keep all three of them in plastic seals?

I didn't know there was a Goldeneye steelbook! It looks fantastic, might have to try and seen one out...

You know what I dislike about the 50th anniversary BluRay set @MayDayDiVicenzo ? They are not individually packed!! Each Bond film for me has its uniqueness. And each Bond film deserves an official steelbook release with original poster art on the front. Sadly, so far the only Bond films that have such a beautiful official FOX/MGM steelbook release are: "Goldfinger", "GoldenEye" and "Skyfall".

Unfair! Especially since "From Russia With Love barely got the "50th anniversay treatment last year. I'm sad :-(.

Yep, that would be incredible (but very expensive)!

I long for the day when OHMSS gets a steelbook (if ever)...

I think MGM/FOX could do it. You have movie fans, who like the whole collection in a cardbord casing (looks kinda cheap). And you have the die-hard Bond collector nerds, who are willing to pay for REAL limited edition steelbooks.

OHMSS. Damn yes, that one too :-(. ALL of them.

I do, but I'm not fussed about them releasing anymore. The Bond 50 set is a decent piece of memorabilia. I've turned my sights to original posters over the last 5 years or so. For £50 you can buy some packaging. For £250+ you can get a unique bit of history. I'd take the one original poster over 5 steel books. On another note, I'd spend ten times more on an old Fleming than a newly packaged film.

I have the Goldeneye and Skyfall steelbooks. Both were ordered online almost on a whim when they came out. Now in hindsight I'm very glad I did.

My three steelbooks (SF, GE & GF) arrive between Wednesday & Friday. I am thinking of leaving them in the plastic seals, as it could increase the value in the future.

I did some checking about other James Bond steelbooks. Apparently, in the US and Canada they have released steelbooks from the "normal" ultimate edition BluRays. And then only for 9 Bond films, as seen on this picture. They have the "Region A" on it, so they can't be played on European BluRay-disc-Players:
    dsc03859y.jpg

To be honest, I don't like the designs of the above 9 steelbooks. It's based on the individually sold U.E. BluRay's. And you can never make your collection complete with it, as only 9 were released.

In Germany they did release a MediaMarkt exclusive single-disc BluRay steelbook of "Casino Royale", which features the poster design of the movie. It is a "Region B" bluray, so only for Europe:
    127502823668614700.jpg
    picture.php?albumid=137&pictureid=755

I think this steelbook is quite rare, and actually fits nicer to the limited edition bluray steelbooks from "Goldfinger", "GoldenEye" and "Skyfall". The only thing I ALWAYS dislike with blurays are the blue strips on top.

For "Quantum Of Solace" a 2-disc DVD steelbook ("Region B", only Europe) was released. I kinda like the poster design of this one. Alas, no BluRay steelbook has been released yet:
    dvd_QOS_SB11.jpg
    quantumofsolacer1artpic2.jpg

I think it's good to remember that the "Casino Royale BluRay 2-disc Collector's Edition" is the only Bond film with that many special features divided over 2 disc's. I checked the 50th Anniversary BluRay Box-set, and it has only 22 (or 23) disc's, for each film one disc.

I have only the 3-disc DVD-version right now, but I want to have the "Casino Royale" 2-disc collector's edition BluRay as well, as it is becoming quite rare. And the teaser poster as featured on the box is simply utterly beautiful:

    67e7e10e22a01de1a4b3e110.L.jpg

It's really a pity MGM/FOX isn't making a 2-disc steelbook version out of it. Because remember, even the above steelbooks for "Goldfinger", "GoldenEye" and "Skyfall" have only 1-disc, as the special features are on that single disc as well.

I truly hope MGM/FOX now see that featuring the original posters on the covers, especially on BluRay steelbooks, are sooo much more beautiful. We have seen now all the examples of steelbooks. Let's hope they will release in the future all Bond films on steelbooks with original poster designs on it.

Sorry, which one you mean @RC7 :-P? I have been updating my previous post with more steelbooks.

In the meanwhile, the original posters on which the "GF", "GE" and "SF" steelbooks are based on:

You said you were thinking of keeping your new ones in the seals, as they may go up in value. I was just curious if you intended to sell them in future.

Well, not sure about that yet. I just think looking at these steelbooks is already fulfilling. I do know that my UT Models 1:18 scaled BMW Z3, that I bought in 1995 in Luxemburg on a holiday, is still in its casing. It's just nice to see what people nowadays ask for that model ;-).

See it as art trading. You love art with your eyes. It's an long-term investment. Off course you sell, bit if you do it properly you can buy even better, more rare, more expensive versions of the same posters. Just have a look on the internet how expensive original Bond posters are nowadays:
    http://cinemasterpieces.com/cinejamesbond.htm
    http://cinemasterpieces.com/cinejamesbond.htm#moon

This beauty you can buy now for $7,795.00 :-). It's an original vintage 1964 print of the British Quad. And it has been restored:
    goldjul09.jpg

Merchandise on "Casino Royale" is already becoming very expensive. For instance this near-mint Casino Royale US Poster from 2006 you can now buy for $255.00:
    casroynotrated.jpg

In 2006 you probably had to pay like $10.00 for it. Similar near-mint original posters from "Licence To Kill" from 1989 are similarly priced (also around $250 to $300). So it also tells you something about the status of the film in an historical context. "Casino Royale" is already seen as an historical masterpiece among collecters. And off course also because the art for this poster is wunderful.
  • I would have thought The Living Daylights would have one to as well as OHMSS & TSWLM.

That may have made a better collection and one film from each 007.

Yeah, it's really a pity top-quality movies like OHMSS have not been put on limited edition steelbooks yet. But what about using this very rare recalled poster art for AVTAK on a BluRay steelbook? It would instantly make my heart beat faster :-P:
    viewaug13.jpg

I expect in 10 years time from now the GF, GE and SF steelbooks, if you preserve them well, could very well cost you on the market like $200.00 individually.

I have an original CR poster in my collection.

I asked as I'm not sure Steel Books will ever really gain much value. They're specifically for trading among fans, where original posters is art everyone can appreciate. I've started an original poster collection - I have 9 originals now, but I can't imagine ever selling them. Like you say, there's something nice about the context and history of the pieces. Prints are fine, but originals have that intrinsic historic value that makes them well worth the outlay IMO. Same as Fleming 1st editions (or even 2nd and 3rd's). I used to collect vehicles etc, but now I put my money into genuine items with a bit of history. The quantity at which you buy is lessened, but I think the value, both personal and financial, is way more.

9 originals @RC7? Could you tell me which Bond films then? And if they are the real, original prints from the actual release of the film? If you have like 3 originals from Bond films with Connery in it, then please put an insurance on it.

Regarding Bond posters versus Bond steelbooks. You are right in part. But Bond posters are usually traded among fans as well. Otherwise that same person would have bought art instead. Everyone can appreciate them, but as it goes with couples the wife/husband has a say in it as well ;-).

My ex-BF for example didn't like to put a big poster on the wall. We had to settle for art.

Ha ha, yes they're covered specifically on my house insurance. They are all original release prints. I've picked them up over the last 5 years or so. The Connery's are massively expensive, the only Connery's I have at the moment are YOLT and DAF. The others in my collection are LALD, TSLWM, MR, AVTAK, TLD, GE, and CR. AVTAK was a leaving present from my previous employers, the best gift I've ever received from a boss, that's for sure!

I especially like the poster art for LALD and MR. Wunderul designs. Which MR-version do you have? If only they would do something like that for Bond 24.

@MrBrown !!!! So good to have you back ;-). Can you....please come in here a bit more often? You are greatly missed.

By the way, I have received two of my six ordered steelbooks (3 of them I leave in seal). It's the first time for me that I see a classic 1960's Bond film in BluRay. By jolly, what a new experience is that! Visually, but also the DTS-surround sound on my home cinema set is better than the old DVD-DTS.

Anyway, for you, and @RC7, here are some pictures. Including my two, linned backed, vintage posters. In frame nowadays :-):

On the subject of the Quantum of Solace dvd steelbook, I've just bought the Netherlands version which has the title of the movie in English as opposed to the version posted above which has the title "Ein Quantum Trost". Otherwise it has the same poster art.

The text on the back of the box is in Dutch. It arrived sealed from amazon.co.uk but I'm going to open it up to see what the disks look like and if the menus are in English or Dutch.

The funny thing is: I bought here in Spain the Craig-trilogy (I really wanted to have that one too :-P), with Spanish translation on the BluRay-cover. But once I put the disc's in the BluRay player, the menu's were all in Dutch :-O :-P.

Anyway, the QOS-steelbook is nice, but sadly only as DVD-version. There is no QOS-steelbook in BluRay :-(.

I popped my new Netherlands dvd of QOS from the steelbook into my player last night "just to check the menus".

(I ended up watching the whole thing. I know I'm in a minority but I really like that movie!)

The disk turned out to be in English. English piracy warning, English text on the menus, English language track by default (not sure if there is another language track) and no subtitles turned on by default.

So until a blu ray steelbook turns up this is a good alternative.
  • I would buy the steelbook of GF simply cos the normal blu ray has a rubbish cover:

    M126633_43146_20120816.jpg

Maybe they were trying to mimic Craig and the Aston in Scotland, but that really doesn't look like the classic scene in GF, it seems to be dawn on the glen, not sunny Switzerland.
