An attractive box set. I think the first five books are generally the best in the Gardner series coupled with Scorpius. I'm unsure as to whether I will purchase these. I have three of the original hardbacks from the 1980's.

I'll give this a miss. I allready have LR (from Book Club Associates ), FSS & IB (both from Jonathan Cape), and I bought ROH & NLFO (from Orion) when they were released earlier this year. The only Gardner book that I don't in Hardback is Cold, which i've got in Paperback.

This looks very nice, but considering I've got used versions of the original hardbacks, I'll stay away.

I may just check this out. I've never read a book by him.

Ditto. I've always sworn never to read any Bond books besides the Flemings but if I can spare the time... why not? ;;)
  • Why have you always sworn this? You might enjoy some of them.

I've posted this in the bargains thread but it's worth repeating here. Amazon uk are now selling this box set for £36 which is 55% off.

Well, I don't agree about Scorpius, but I do agree on the first five being the best, but I also toss in Win, Lose or Die; License to Kill and GoldenEye (Gardner's novelizations are top-notch).

My box of books arrived in the post yesterday. They are nice enough but seem a little on the small side. Can someone get out a tape measure and tell me the dimensions and the page count on one of the 1980s Jonathan Cape books?

I'm glad these books are being re-released. I think Gardner's novels were very much underrated and they deserve to be seen by a wider audience. During the late 80s and early 90s, these were the only new Bond material available for several years.

Couldn't find a more appropriate thread to post this. Earlier today I found this post on the website of Dan Mogford, who worked on the book cover designs for the 2011 release of the John Gardner novels, by Orion Publishing.

Mogford didn't go much into detail about the designs, but for anyone interested, this is what he posted on his site in 2012:
Earlier this year I was asked by Steve Marking – Art Director at Orion Publishing – if I would like to pitch some ideas alongside a handful of other designers and their in-house team for a relaunch of John Gardner's James Bond Novels. I bit his hand off of course.

John Gardner was approached by the estate of Ian Fleming in late 1980 to see if he would consider writing a new James Bond story. After initial hesitation he accepted the challenge and went on to write sixteen 007 adventures between 1981 and 1996, including Goldeneye and Licence to Kill. Orion are reprinting the entire backlist over the next eighteen months to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Gardner's first 007 outing.

I came up with three quite different approaches to pitch to Orion, two of which were, in retrospect, fairly clichéd rehashings of familiar Bond themes – wealthy super-villains, silver, gold, a smudge of sex. Not something I normally design and almost certainly not something I would pick up in a bookshop. The third approach which had been vaguely forming in my head right up until the day before the deadline is what you see here – the kind of thing that I would be drawn to if browsing a bookstore and fortunately the exact thing Orion and Ian Fleming Publications were looking for in the redesign.

[Production: The covers are printed on uncoated stock with a clear foil 'varnish' to the key elements. I'll post the rest as and when they are approved.]

I'm trying to get familiar with these printings, @Torgeirtrap.

So as with the start of this discussion, there were the 2011 Orion sets duplicating the original covers/hardbacks.

The 2012 conversation must have been for these covers, I expect. Or if I'm mistaken I can remove the image to avoid confusion.

Thanks for the info, @RichardTheBruce! I didn't notice that the 2011 box set and the 2012 covers were different editions when googling them. Mogford worked on the 2012 ones you posted above.

Oh dear, that’s awful. Looks like any old generic cheap airport thriller.
