Bond movies love their animals (2nd edit)

edited March 2013 in Bond Movies Posts: 4,622
Having breezed through all 23 films recently, I am pretty sure that there are only two Bond films that don't feature a helicopter. Many Bond films in fact have multiple helicopter scenes, and of course there are those entries that prominently display the machines such as YOLT and TND most notably.
The two films that don't seem to have a helicopter scene are DN and TMWTGG, although I am prepared to be corrected. I just didn't notice a whirlybird in either film. The other 21 films all do for sure though.
For my next run through the films, I am going to make note of which films feature either shots of dogs or pigeons. There are plenty of each, especially pigeons.
I know, who cares, but it keeps me amused and looking out for something new, when viewing these films over and over and over again.

    Surprisingly, this thread already exists:
    http://www.mi6community.com/index.php?p=/discussion/5746/bond-and-his-helicopters/p1

I recently started making a list of all the animals featured in the novels and films, and their purpose. Maybe you could change this thread to 'Animals in Bond films/novels' if it doesn't already exist (couldn't find one), and I'll post my current list here.

The first dog I think of when someone mentions them appearing in the Bond films is that cute stray from Thunderball that kept entering in the shots of the parade scene when Bond is trying to escape after being shot. You can even see the dog urinating onscreen, which is a funny moment amid all the tension:

That's an awesome list @QBranch. The rest of us can just chip in with additions now.
I can add just off the top of my head, that there is a stray dog in QoS. I think we see it during the montage in which Bond and Camille exit the desert.
I do keep an eye out for pigeons, as I do quite like the birds, being a big city, downtown dweller. There are flocking pigeons seen in the middle of the street during the car chase in TMWTGG.
There are several pigeons puttering about in the background as Bond opens the door to the hidden subway station, in DAD.
I am pretty sure there is a stray cat that scurries by in FRWL as Tatiana makes her way to her initial meeting with Klebb.
Barnyard animals also feature in a few movies. There is quite the collection in LALD that we see as Bond and Solitaire make their way to the double-decker bus. I think we are talking some goats along with chickens and roosters milling about in the dusty street.
Also in OP pts, during the vehicle chase, one of the enemy jeeps careens off the road scattering chickens and roosters. I've always wondered how this scene was shot, as one of the roosters seems perilously close to being hit by the jeeps left front wheel. Were they able to add the birds, after the fact, in post? Surely they wouldn't terrorize the poor creatures just to get a shot.

Quick note re Drax's attack dogs. The breed is actually Beauceron.
    From wiki:
The Beauceron is a guard dog and herding dog breed falling into the working dog category whose origins lie in the plains of Northern France. The Beauceron is also known as Berger de Beauce (sheepdog from Beauce) or Bas Rouge (red-stockings).
A French herding breed known for centuries in western Europe, the Beauceron is noted as one of the breeds used to create the Doberman Pinscher :-B :D
Don't forget Sanchez's pet iguana, both the real one and what I am sure is a prop substitute used in several scenes.

To add about the Beauceron: he's known for letting people in, but not letting them out. At least, not intact.

The question is, are the villains lavished cats loyal to their masters, just using them or simply afraid of them?

When things get a little out-of-hand and James Bond is looking to vanquish his adversary, the famous cats seem to abandon ship and save their own skins, albeit they view the impending disaster licking paws in self satisfied gloat whist they consider their escape as a serious one up on their recently deceased owner; still animals have always held a sixth sense for danger….

I was thinking about the use of animals in the Bond series after watching Skyfall recently, and it got me thinking how the Bond series doesn't use animals as much anymore.
Skyfall is the first Bond film since LTK where Bond has been in a dangerous situation with an animal. A gap of 23 years!
In the days of old, Bond would battle tarantulas, sharks, snakes, dogs, tigers...more sharks....snakes. The komodo dragons are a welcome return to Bond being at peril from the animal kingdom. Is it that audiences are not interested in seeing Bond fighting for survival as a shark potentially devours him?
Do villains not have dangerous pets that would make suitable means to kill British agents?

Yes, it would be great, and (as it's been so long) fresh to see Bond battle the villain's pet once again. SF's komodos and even the scorpion were a treat, but they were not sicced on Bond, and never felt like a real threat. Let's hope EON and Logan have taken this element into account for future releases. I'd love to see sharks or crocodilians make a return, or indeed something new. In an early draft of my fan fiction, Bond encounters a giant centipede during his stay in Hawaii.

Yes, I believe it was as he discarded it pretty quickly when it had served its purpose as cover. Plus, manta rays are deadly creatures as we know from the death of Steve Irwin in 2006.

That was a stingray, not a manta ray.

I always assumed the manta ray was real, and that you could actually use one to hide under due to their placid nature. Anyway, just did a bit of research, and all links mention it being a fake disguise, so I guess we can remove that one from the list.

I could not remember anything about manta rays except they were big. Here is trivia I just got online:
MANTA RAYS (will not harm you!) :)
They can be up to 25 feet in length and weight as much as 3,000 pounds.

Some types of Manta Rays engage in the process of migrating.

They can lose their protective mucus membrane if they are touched by humans.

The Manta Ray has the largest brain to body ratio of all sharks and rays on Earth.

You will very rarely find any Manta Ray in captivity due to their size. They are currently only found in four aquariums in the world. (my note: so undoubtedly the one in the Bond film was fake ...)

The average life span for a Manta Ray is 20 years.

They are very close relatives of the shark. Ironically, sharks as well as orcas are their main predators. They are also closely related to the stingray but they don’t have a stinger.

They are amazing when it comes to the acrobatics that they display.

The Manta Ray is classified as a fish. It is one of the largest and it continues to be one that we know the least about.

They don’t have a skeleton that is made from bone.

The smallest species of Manta Ray is the Mobula Diabolis. It is only about 2 feet in length.

There are myths that the Manta Ray will consume people but they are false. These are very gentle creatures that are able to get close to humans without harming them.

The Manta Ray is only surpassed in size in the marine world by sharks and whales.

    ***
I grew up in Florida, where there are plenty of sting rays and yes those are dangerous.

  • They should have used that Russian experiment where the scientists removed the head of a dog and kept it alive before placing it back on. This experiment is not only cruel but has also been debated if its video footage was real or not but maybe a Bond villaij could be someone who does this kind of stuff along woth c-ockfights and bullfighting for the film to raise awareness and address tye wrongfulness of animal cruelty.
