Video Games Influenced By James Bond

This gave me the idea from a conversation I was having in another thread. What video games can you think of that have been based on or influenced by Bond. I'll kick things off with a few from the 80's. Please feel free to add photos/videos along with your memories:

SPY HUNTER (1983)

An absolute classic from Bally Midway. A vertical scrolling game in which you drive the G-6155 Interceptor. The game was continuous meaning there was no end to the game. The purpose was to get the highest score possible (this was very much in line with the majority of games from that period). Various enemies appear throughout trying to destroy your car. They all possessed different abilities:

Road Lord - Bulletproof. It would try to force you off the road
Switch Blade - Produced tyre shredders (ala DB5 in Goldfinger)
The Enforcer - A sleek limousine with a sniper appearing from the rear passenger window
Mad Bomber - A helicopter which would drop bombs in front of your car's path.

Thankfully your car was also well equipped to defend against these enemies. The Interceptor started off with front mounted machine guns (with an infinite supply of ammo). However, at intermittent points, a "Weapons Van" would appear allowing you to drive into the back of it to upgrade your weapons. These were 'Smoke Screen', 'Oil Slick' and 'Ground to Air Missiles'.

Occasionally, the player would be warned that the bridge up ahead was out and so you would need to navigate your car via a sliproad where it would transform into a powerboat in order to continue it's mission. This nautical version of the Interceptor was equipped with the same front mounted machine guns as the car.

Midway originally produced a version of this game accompanied by the James Bond Theme. However, it was scrapped when EON refused to allow them the rights to use the theme. Henry Mancini's "Theme from Peter Gunn" was subsequently used instead.

An ill advised sequel was released in 1987 and was panned by critics. (I played a port of it on PS2. It is bloody awful). A re-imagined version of Spy Hunter was released by Midway in 2001 on the PS2 and XBOX. It was met with a critical acclaim.

ELEVATOR ACTION (1983)

Released by Taito, this game featured the player as a secret agent who infiltrated high security buildings in order to steal secrets from various rooms (indicated by red doors). The player would use various elevators and escalators to descend to the parking lot where on completing the mission, the agent would escape in his red sports car. Numerous enemy agents would appear throughout trying to stop you and the player could either shoot or jump kick them (these enemies could also be squashed by an elevator or have a ceiling light shot on to their heads). The game was ported on to home computer and a sequel was released in the arcades in 1994. A revamped version of the original is available from the PSN Store and XBOX Live.

One area in the game I always thought was lacking was the music. This is the soundtrack to the arcade game:

Now compare it to the music used for the ported version on the Sinclair Spectrum:

I always liked that tune. Far more Bondian.

ROLLING THUNDER (1986)

Released by Namco. This game was a 2D scrolling shoot em up in which the player took control of a secret agent codenamed "Albatross" from World Crime Police Organization. The objective was to rescue a missing female agent named "Geldra" from a sinister, yet nameless society, whose leader was a cross between Blofeld and Ming The Merciless. The player started the game with a pistol, but that could be swapped to a rapid firing machine gun at various points throught the ten levels of the game. This game was also ported to home computer. (The spectrum version I have was OK but not great). Two sequels later followed.

SLY SPY SECRET AGENT (1989)

A video game by Data East that was more than just a homage to Bond (the end of level bosses featured characters based on Jaws, Odd Job and the JIM diving Suit from FYEO). You played a top American secret agent (you could choose your own 3 digit codename at the start. Naturally I always went for 0-0-7) whose job was to rescue the President and First Lady from an organization called C.W.D. - Council for World Domination.

The game was a 2D scrolling shoot em up with the game engine based on Data East's previous smash - Robocop. There was variety to the levels however including skydiving, with the coup de grâce being the agent would pull the ripcord to reveal a Stars and Stripes parachute (where did they get that idea from?). There was also a level featuring the player on a motorbike shooting down enemies on bikes and jetpacks and two scuba levels where the player was equipped with a harpoon to kill other scuba divers and sharks. After numerous delays a port was belatedly released on computer in 1991 to a mixed response.

Throughout the game, certain enemies would drop gun parts. Once you collected five of these parts, you would be rewarded with the "Golden Gun", a big mutha of a rifle that could obliterate everything on screen (a similar weapon featured in the movie Robocop as well as the video game of the same name).

I have fond memories of lost hours playing the original Spyhunter. Midway did a cracking job of updating it for consoles in 2001 The two sequels, well the first sequel was ok, the second was truly dire. I have not played the PSP version.
There was a game that was very similar to Spyhunter, that was released on the Sega Master Sytem, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

    Edit
Action Fighter, that's what it was called.

That's a very nice find @MajorDSmythe (and thanks for cleaning up this thread by the way).

I've never heard of Action Fighter but a quick look on YouTube led me to this:

Yes it does indeed look heavily influenced by Spy Hunter. Looks good fun too.

EDIT: After looking up further info on this game, I see it was originally an arcade game made by SEGA in 1986. Here is YouTube video of someone playing it on MAME.

How did I never see or hear of this game? It couldn't have been very popular seeing how much of my childhood was misspent frequenting the arcades and the fact I was always drawn to Bond-like games.

I need to get playing this and fast!

The Metal Gear Solid series was heavily inspired from James Bond. FRWL is even mentioned in MGS3 Snake Eater.

I always felt Splinter Cell Conviction was Bondesque.

Always thought the Assassin's Creed games starring Ezio were very Bond influenced. Ezio is essentially a 15th century James Bond, Leonardo Da Vinci is Q and the Templars are SPECTRE.

Syphon Filter on the PS1 was created to compete with GoldenEye on the N64. A couple levels have main character Gabe Logan donning a tuxedo.

I'd forgotten about Syphon Filter. You're right though, very Bondish indeed. The sequel was brilliant.

Every sequel was brilliant. The entire series was good, and I feel it deserves to return.

No once they started messing about with it (The Omega Strain) and dropped Gabe as the lead character, it fell flat on it's face.

Omega Strain was meant purely as an online game, hence character creation. They brought Gabe back in Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow.

Yes but it was never realised as online play and ended up as a disappointing single player game. As for the other 2 titles you mentioned, they were very decent PSP titles but were pretty badly treated in the port over to the PS2.

Well, the single-player was, almost literally, shoe-horned in. And I happen to like the PS2 ports of Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow.

    GTA V

Not only is the JB 700 basically the game's version of the DB5, but the mission "Deep Inside" is one big love letter to James Bond.

I wondered whether someone would mention that. It was RARE's follow up to Goldeneye007.

Surprised no one has mentioned Time Splitters 2. Developed by many of the same people who did Goldeneye N64, with music by one of the GE N64 composers. Many of the levels are throwbacks to Goldeneye.

    Take a look at around the 2 min mark;

Wow this is incredible, i never knew how similar this game was to Goldeneye, from the engine to the music, even the healthbar is the same (around 5:08). And that Level is Basically Severnaja. Guess i have to get a copy now. Thanks for the hint @BMW_with_missiles

I've only completed the opening level because of how it's one giant homage to GoldenEye.

Not sure if it's mentioned or not but Splinter cell Conviction and Alpha Protocol were both really influenced by Bond. With Conviction I get a sort of Licence to kill/ never say never again vibe from it. Especially as the game has more of an action packed vibe to it. Alpha Protocol has a strong action packed vibe as well also with dialogue I believe one of the choices was based on bond one was based on Jason Bourne and one was based on I don't know.

@Risico007, I believe the 'Alpha Protocol' game was marketed as the '3 JB's' game, where you could utilize any style of the infamous three: James Bond, Jason Bourne, or Jack Bauer.
I always played in the style of Bond in fact I was so happy to unlock the lover not a fighter (I believe is the name of he achievement) sleeping with all 4 girls ( though I can only remeber 3 the brunette photographer/spy the handler Maria and Sy I know there is a 4th one and a mission based one in Greece I think but I can't remember her name)

But yeah Protocol was so fun shame it was a one and done I mean 2010 was such a great year for spy games Splinter Cell Conviction Alpha Protocol Bloodstone And Goldeneye....and now uhm Alekline's gun and that's about it...

@Risico007 don't forget the new Hitman, they made it much more spy thriller-ish and took a lot from the Bond playbook and implemented it in the game, like locations and characters.

As for Alpha Protocol, i played it a couple month ago for the first time. I missed out in 2010 due to some horrible reviews, and as usual i can only say F the critics. It sure wasn't perfect but for a Bond fan this game has everything i need and more. i hope i will see an official Bond game one day that can captivate me as much

I couldn't find the right thread for this. But remember Perfect Dark? Mr. Blonde is none other than Stamper himself! The only piece of the Rare TND game that never came to be.
